1. Your mom can be your best friend
If there's anything that "Gilmore Girls" can teach you, it's that your mom can be your best friend! Lorelai and Rory Gilmore are the mother-daughter relationship that dreams are made of. Whether they're just watching a movie or talking about their guy problems, their bonding time never feels forced. Above all, they are always there for each other and support each other during life's most difficult moments.
2. You may hit a deer, but you have to keep going
Remember that time Rory hit a deer? She went to school and missed her test. When her mom told her she could drop out of school, Rory did not give up. Don't let the deer in the road stop you from going on with your life. We all find ourselves in unfortunate circumstances, but you have to keep on going like Rory.
3. Take that chocolate break
When Melissa McCarthy's character, Sookie St. James, was pregnant, she went into an empty room in the inn to watch "Dark Shadows" and eat Toblerone chocolates. "It was an hour all to myself," she said. Sometimes we just need some time alone with our favorite candy to make everything seem all right.
4. You're not alone in looking for that forever someone
It's one of Lorelai Gilmore's best quotes about dating: "It's all any of us wants, to find a nice person to hang out with 'til we drop dead," she said. "Not a lot to ask!"
5. There's no shame in being the smart girl
Rory Gilmore studied hard with the goal of getting into Harvard. "Who cares if I'm pretty if I fail my finals?" she asked. Rory ultimately ended up attending Yale University.
6. True friends will always be there for you
After Liza Weil's character, Paris Geller, had a breakdown on national TV because she didn't get into Harvard University, Rory Gilmore was there for her and helped her deal with the sad reality.
7. We all need someone to complain to
Lorelai Gimore felt bad for her mom, Emily Gilmore (played by Kelly Bishop), because she thought that she had no one to complain to. Lorelai ultimately went over to her mom's place to "hang out," a term her mom did not quite understand but accepted.
8. Don't give your heart to just anyone
Listen to Lorelai Gilmore's famous words when you're willing to sacrifice everything for someone: "If you're going to throw your life away for a boy, he'd better have a motorcycle."
9. The best cure for a breakup is a good wallow
Lorelai Gilmore gave her daughter some advice when she had a bad breakup. "Get back in your pajamas, go to bed, eat nothing but gallons of ice cream and tons of pizza, don't take a shower or shave your legs or put on any kind of makeup at all and just sit in the dark and watch a really sad movie and have a good long cry and just wallow. You need to wallow," she told Rory.
10. The one you're looking for could be right there all along
Lorelai Gilmore dated Max Medina, Jason "Digger" Stiles and Christopher Hayden. But ultimately it was Luke Danes (played by Scott Patterson) who was right there all along and the one she was meant to be with. While everyone knew they belonged together, it took Lorelai some time to figure it out for herself.
11. Carry a book with you at all times
You never know when you may need a good book! Rory Gilmore is a bookworm who even carried a book to parties and school dances. "I just take a book with me everywhere. It's just habit," she once explained. Books were an escape for Rory during lunch and even helped her bond with her then-boyfriend, Jess. "I like showing you all the stuff I'm reading," she told him. "But you knew I'd want to read it. You're a book tease," he responded. It was in this moment that we knew we loved these two together!
12. We never know the impact we may have on someone
When Rory Gilmore reunited with Jess Mariano after their breakup, she found out that he'd written his own book. He gave Rory the credit for helping him find success.
13. Keep it real with your friends
Lane Kim (played by Keiko Agena) was always willing to tell Rory Gilmore the reality of the situation without sugarcoating anything. Lane was the completely honest friend we all wanted in our lives. She once told Rory, "I love you. But you've been mopey, dopey and about 12 other melancholy dwarves for the past five weeks."
14. Don't go running back to your ex
Jared Padalecki played the charming ex-boyfriend, Dean Forrester, that Rory Gilmore went back to. Even though he was a married man, Rory decided to lose her virginity to him. After Dean's marriage failed, he and Rory tried to date again. But like the first time, their relationship just did not work. Rory's relationship with Dean further showed us that an ex is an ex for a reason.
15. Follow your passions no matter what
At the end of "Gilmore Girls," Rory Gilmore chased her dream even though that meant giving up her boyfriend. Logan Huntzberger (played by Matt Czuchry) proposed marriage to her, but she declined because she didn't want to move to Palo Alto, California. She instead wanted to pursue her career. Rory ended up without Logan, but as a reporter, she got the opportunity of a lifetime.
16. Make sure your autobiography is worth reading
Live like Paris Geller. She once said, "I want to live my life so that I'll be able to read an in-depth biography about myself in later years and not puke."
17. Keep a positive outlook
It's all about your attitude! Lorelai Gilmore knew that she was disappointing her mother at times, but she kept a positive outlook instead of feeling like a disappointment of a daughter. "One day I decided that instead of being hurt and upset by your disapproval, I'm gonna be amused. I'm gonna find it funny. I'm even going to take a little pleasure in it," Lorelai happily told her mother.
18. Women can propose too
It was one of the show's sweetest moments when Lorelai proposed to Luke and without hesitation, he said yes. She even said he could have a minute to think it over, but he didn't need one. Awwwww!
19. Life doesn't always work out like you planned it
For proof that you can never fully plan your life to work out the way you want it to, look no further than Lorelai Gilmore. She was unexpectedly pregnant with Rory Gilmore at the age of 16 but had no regrets. "There are many paths in life. There's the 'Hey, you're cute, sure, I'll marry you after graduation and med school,' and the 'Can you drive Susie to soccer today, 'cause I've got a pedicure?' path. And then there's my path, where I found myself 16 and pregnant and I realized 'I have to get a job, I have to raise a kid and being me, I have to do it all by myself.' Not easy. But the thing with my path was, when I reached the end, I turned around and realized I'd ended up someplace really good," she said.
20. Home is always where the heart is
When Rory Gilmore moved away from home to go to Yale University, she knew that home was just a drive away. Stars Hollow always welcomed her back.
