MTV EMAs: Most buzzworthy moments of Europe Music Awards past

Since they began in 1994, The MTV Europe Music Awards have had just as many unexpected and celebratory moments as their Stateside counterpart. Stars have brought daring fashions, surprise performances and shocking appearances to the red carpet and the stage. In celebration of the 2017 MTV EMAs airing from London on Nov. 12, Wonderwall.com is reliving some of the craziest, most buzz-worthy moments of EMAs past, starting with Miley Cyrus sparking a joint on-stage. During the 2013 show in Amsterdam, the pop starlet smoked some marijuana while accepting the best video prize. The "Wrecking Ball" singer, who was once a vocal fan of pot but has since stopped smoking, told Britain's Capital FM radio station that she did it because she knew "the fans in Amsterdam would love it" and "the whole place would go super-wild."

The debut MTV EMAs in 1994 had an unexpected host: music icon Tom Jones! The Welsh singer, who is known for a string of hits in the 1960s and '70s, emceed the show in Berlin.

Pop music began dominating the MTV EMAs in 1998 when the Spice Girls won awards for best pop act and best group during the ceremony in Milan. Sporty Spice Mel C and Baby Spice Emma Bunton accepted the trophies on behalf of the iconic girl group since Mel B and Victoria Beckham couldn't attend because of their pregnancies. "We've done it again," Mel C said during their acceptance speech. "And a big hello from the other two."

Unfortunately, the Spice Girls' success wouldn't last. The "Wannabe" singers — sans Ginger Spice Geri Halliwell, who left the group in 1998 — performed for the (seemingly) last time at the MTV EMAs in Stockholm in November 2000. The group disbanded one month later, breaking the hearts of adoring fans worldwide, before reuniting in 2007.

Sacha Baron Cohen appeared in character as Borat at the 2006 MTV EMAs in Copenhagen, Denmark, where he delivered a jarring speech to the crowd. While he called out quite a few celebrities, it was his message to Madonna that shocked everyone. Sacha-as-Borat commented on the pop star's adoption of a Malawian child, saying, "My only concern is that this singing transvestite will not be such a good father."

British pop star Robbie Williams slandered his own award-winning song at the 2000 MTV EMAs in Stockholm. During his acceptance speech for best song for his hit "Rock DJ," Robbie said, "I am not going to say anything bad about people's choices on this one, but I think it's a terrible song and a silly song."

Kanye West's "Imma let you finish" debacle targeting Taylor Swift at the MTV VMAs in 2009 will live in infamy, but the rapper's first acceptance speech interruption came nearly three years earlier. When French band Justice won the best video award at the 2006 MTV EMAs in Copenhagen, Denmark, Kanye got involved. He ranted about how he should have won the award for his "Touch The Sky" video because it cost $1 million and starred Pamela Anderson.

Jennifer Lopez performed her hit single "Love Don't Cost A Thing" at the 2000 MTV EMAs after entering Globe Arena in Stockholm in an airplane that descended to the stage from the ceiling! The superstar also took home the best R&B award that night.

Beyonce is known for her flawless performances, but at the 2003 MTV EMAs in Edinburgh, Scotland, her set didn't go as planned. Near the end of her "Baby Boy" performance, Queen Bey and Sean Paul suffered a backing track error that went on for nearly a minute. 'Yonce and Sean eventually left the stage with their dancers while Christina Aguilera, who walked on to continue hosting, was also left confused. Eventually, the "Sorry" singer returned to redo her performance. The retake would later replace the original set in re-airings of the show.

One of the craziest moments in MTV EMAs history happened when fans across the globe managed to "Rickroll" the award show! Nearly 100 million votes were cast for "Never Gonna Give You Up" singer Rick Astley for the best act ever award at the 2008 MTV EMAs in Liverpool, England, beating out the likes of The Beatles, U2 and Britney Spears. Rick didn't show up to accept the award so Katy Perry and Perez Hilton accepted it on his behalf.

Christina Aguilera and Kelly Osbourne might have buried the hatchet now, but in 2003, the two ladies had serious beef with each other. During the 2003 MTV EMAs in Edinburgh, Scotland, Christina refused to walk the red carpet if Kelly — who was a guest VJ for the show — was present. Kelly responded to Christina's demands by calling the pop singer a "cow" and saying her music was "crap." A skit later aired during the show that showed Christina throwing darts at a picture of Kelly. Ozzy Osbourne's daughter addressed the skit on stage while presenting an award, saying, "If Christina Aguilera has to resort to throwing darts at my head after everything she's achieved and everything she's done, then she's a really sad, sorry person."

Ed Sheeran is known for being a sweetheart who sings amazing love songs, but during the 2015 MTV EMAs in Milan, he showcased his raunchier side. The British singer let the sexual innuendo fly with co-host Ruby Rose, asking her if she wanted to "play hide the banana" and complimenting her on her "p—-" while she was talking about cats.

Britney Spears is a huge pop star and icon now, but in 1999, she was a fresh new artist who'd just released her debut album, "…Baby One More Time." The songs on that album garnered her a record four awards (best female, best pop, best song and best breakthrough) at the 1999 MTV EMAs in Dublin.

When Green Day won the global icon award at the 2016 MTV EMAs in Rotterdam, Netherlands, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong had some sharp criticism for the political climate in the States. "Nice to be out of America just for a second because of this horrendous election that's going on right now," he said of the 2016 presidential election. "Our entire country is about to have one big collective heart attack." The band followed up his remarks by performing their hit song "American Idiot."

Justin Bieber was the MTV EMAs' first digital host at the show in 2010. The "Baby" singer live tweeted and interacted with fans during the web simulcast of the 2010 MTV EMAs telecast in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

The 2013 MTV EMAs in Amsterdam saw the appearance of a special guest… Anchorman Ron Burgundy! Will Ferrell graced the stage as San Diego's favorite newscaster and presented the award for best video to Miley Cyrus, told best female winner Katy Perry the things he'd do to her if he "were just 10 years younger," and sparked a conversation with Eminem after the rapper accepted the global icon award.

Rapper Nicki Minaj served as the host of the 2014 MTV EMAs in Glasgow, Scotland, where she surprised audiences by singing The Proclaimers' hit rock song "500 Miles." Nicki's other ass-et made an appearance as well when Katy Perry revealed she sleeps on a pillow shaped like Nicki's backside!

Singer Katy Perry managed to host and perform at the 2008 MTV EMAs in Liverpool, England. The pop star had an impressive 12 outfit changes during the event and opened the show singing her hit "I Kissed A Girl" while riding a giant cherry chapstick.

Jason Derulo had a particularly memorable performance at the 2015 MTV EMAs in Milan. The R&B singer performed his hit "Want to Want Me" while riding on a hoverboard for the entirety of the song!

When Justin Bieber won the best looks award at the 2015 EMAs in Milan, he happily thanked his mother and her awesome genetics. "I don't know what to say because I got these looks from my mama."
