The 69th Annual Academy Awards took place in Los Angeles on March 24, 1997, nearly 20 years ago. The top winners that year? "The English Patient," "Fargo" and "Evita." Wonderwall.com is taking a look back at the red carpet, starting with Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise! The then-married couple attended the 1997 Academy Awards together — Tom was up for best actor for his work in "Jerry Maguire" while Nicole presented the Oscar for Best Film Editing. Back at the 1997 Oscars, Salma Hayek arrived with Mexican singing superstar Luis Miguel. The actress introduced Kenny Loggins' performance of "For the First Time" from "One Fine Day," which was nominated for Best Original Song.
Celine Dion pulled double duty at the 1997 Oscars — performing both her nominated song from "Up Close and Personal," "Because You Loved Me," and also performing Natalie Cole's nominated tune "I Finally Found Someone" from "The Mirror Has Two Faces" after Natalie fell ill.

She also presented Best Original Song with her "The First Wives Club" co-stars Goldie Hawn and Bette Midler. Steve also had a role in the ceremony, introducing the "Jerry Maguire" Best Picture segment.
A year and a half before they wed, James Brolin and Barbra Streisand attended the 1997 Academy Awards together. Her song "I Finally Found Someone" from "The Mirror Has Two Faces" was up for Best Original Song but lost to Madonna's "You Must Love Me" from "Evita."
A few weeks before the 1997 Oscar ceremony, Helen Hunt hosted the Academy Awards for Technical Achievement. During the Oscars telecast, she was on hand to introduce the segment recapping those tech awards.
Jim Carrey attended the Oscars with then-girlfriend Lauren Holly. The actor served as a presenter, handing out the award for Best Visual Effects during the ceremony.
