It all started back in 2004 when Brad Pitt was married to Jennifer Aniston. Speculation about a Brad and Jen split was rampant as rumors swirled about Brad and Angelina Jolie's amazing chemistry on the "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" set.

Keeping their distance

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie denied stories of an on-set romance while making "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" in 2004 and kept their distance while doing promotional appearances for the flick in March 2005 — barely two months after Brad and Jennifer Aniston announced plans to divorce.

Too soon?

Jennifer Aniston filed for divorce from Brad Pitt on March 25, 2005, less than three months after she and Brad announced their separation following four and a half years of marriage. That same month, Brad and Angelina posed for an eyebrow-raising feature for W magazine entitled "Domestic Bliss." The 60-page photo portfolio, which was released that July, depicted them as a married couple with several children. Foreshadowing!

Stolen smiles

A month after Jennifer Aniston's divorce filing, a paparazzo captured photos of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie on a beach in Africa with her son Maddox. The two remained mum on their relationship status, and at the film's premiere in June 2005, they avoided being photographed together. But fortunately for the gossip world, a photographer managed to catch the two passing each other at the event sharing a smile.

The Jolie-Pitts

Making things official! Angelina Jolie adopted daughter Zahara from Ethiopia in July 2005. Brad Pitt, Angelina, Maddox and Zahara looked a lot like a family as they were frequently spotted out together. In November 2005, Brad reportedly filed to legally adopt both children and have their last name changed to Jolie-Pitt.

Welcome, Shiloh!

In January 2006, Angelina Jolie announced that she was pregnant with her and Brad Pitt's first biological child. But the pregnancy didn't slow down the jet-setting family, which spent time in Paris and eventually settled in Namibia, where Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt was born on May 27, 2006. That June, Shiloh made her debut on the cover of People magazine. The couple donated the money they made from the sale of the photographs — which was reportedly around $7.6 million — to African charities.

Marriage equality

In September 2006, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie created the Jolie-Pitt Foundation to aid humanitarian causes around the world. A month later, Brad told Esquire that he and Angelina would marry "when everyone else in the country who wants to be married is legally able."

Red carpet official

Despite sharing children and being dedicated to one another, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie didn't make their red carpet debut as a couple until December 2006. The pair finally posed together at the premiere of Angelina's film "The Good Shepherd."

Adopting Pax

Adding to the Jolie-Pitt clan, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie adopted then-3-year-old son Pax from Vietnam in early 2007. Pax made his debut on the cover of Hello! magazine, where Angelina explained: "I will stay at home to help Pax adjust to his new life." The growing family was spotted out and about later that year.

Adding one (or two) more!

Speculation about a second Angelina Jolie pregnancy began in early 2008. The actress finally revealed her baby bump on the red carpet at the Independent Spirit Awards on Feb. 23, 2008.

Twins!

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt confirmed that they were expecting twins in May 2008 while attending the Cannes Film Festival premiere of "Kung Fu Panda." A very pregnant Angelina walked the red carpet with Brad and admitted that finding out they were having two was a shock.

Meet Knox and Vivienne!

Continuing with the globe-trotting theme, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie chose to have their twins in Nice, France. The babies were born on July 12, 2008, and named Knox Leon and Vivienne Marcheline. Like older sister Shiloh, the twins made their debut on the cover of People magazine the following month. The couple sold the images for a reported $14 million and donated the proceeds to the Jolie-Pitt Foundation.

Ex-wife drama

Uncool? In October 2008 Angelina Jolie told The New York Times that she couldn't wait for her children to watch her and Brad Pitt's film "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" because "not a lot of people get to see a movie where their parents fell in love." Angelina received a lot of backlash since she and Brad had previously insisted they were not together during filming, as Brad was still married to Jennifer Aniston at that time. Later that year, Jennifer told Vogue that she thought Angelina's comments were "uncool." "I felt those details were a little inappropriate to discuss," she explained.

Through Brad's lens

Brad Pitt provided W magazine with private photos of wife Angelina Jolie at their home in France in November 2008. On having the photographs taken a few weeks after giving birth to twins, Angelina told the magazine: "I'm with a man who's evolved enough to look at my body and see it as more beautiful because of the journey it has taken and what it has created. He genuinely sees it that way. So I genuinely feel even sexier."

Red carpet love

In what proved to be a quiet year in Brangelina land, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie got cozy on the red carpet at the premiere of Brad's "Inglourious Basterds" in Los Angeles in August 2009.

Humanitarians

Tagging along! Angelina Jolie continued her role as a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador and brought Brad Pitt along to visit refugees in the Bosnian village of Medjedja in April 2010.

No third pregnancy

In August 2010, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie refuted rumors that they were pregnant for the third time. Angelina put the rumors to rest in Vanity Fair, explaining, "No, I'm not pregnant. We're not opposed to it. But we want to make sure we can give everybody special time."

The whole gang! In a rare spotting of the entire Jolie-Pitt clan, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were seen walking around New Orleans with all six of their children on March 20, 2011.

More ex-wife drama

Like Angelina Jolie the year before, Brad Pitt found himself coming under fire for comments about his marriage to Jennifer Aniston in September 2011. Brad told Parade magazine: "I wasn't living an interesting life myself. I think that my marriage had something to do with it. Trying to pretend the marriage was something that it wasn't." This led to speculation he was insulting his ex, so Brad spent the rest of the press tour for his film "Moneyball" defending his statements.

Wedding pressure

Under pressure! Both Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie claimed their children were pressing them to get married in late 2011. Brad told Ellen DeGeneres that the kids were "putting on the heat," while Angelina told Christiane Amanpour, "The kids asked me the other day, and I asked them if it was just because they wanted to have a 'big cake'. They see movies that have the people getting married in the movies… you know, the happily ever after."

The leg pop! Even though Brad Pitt was the one nominated for an Oscar, Angelina Jolie stole the spotlight at the 2012 Academy Awards. Wearing a black velvet Atelier Versace gown with a thigh-high slit, Angelina's unique pose became a trending topic on Twitter.

Officially engaged!

Engaged! Brad Pitt's manager confirmed the actor and Angelina Jolie were engaged on April 14, 2012. Angelina stepped out with a diamond ring worth an estimated $1 million after the announcement. That same month, the family headed to the Galapagos Islands, where Angelina met with refugees and continued her humanitarian work.

Serious decision

May 2013 brought solemn news as Angelina Jolie revealed her decision to undergo a preventative double mastectomy in order to decrease her chances of getting breast cancer after she was diagnosed as a carrier of the BRCA1 gene. Angelina thanked Brad Pitt for being so supportive, and Brad called her decision "heroic."

Family support

Angelina Jolie was given the Oscars' Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award during the Governors Awards in November 2013. Brad Pitt and oldest son Maddox attended the ceremony with Angelina, and in her speech she thanked Brad and their children.

Supportive wife

Oscar couple! Angelina Jolie attended the 2014 Academy Awards with Brad Pitt. That night, Brad won his first Oscar for his work as a producer on "12 Years a Slave."

Strong, long relationship

In May 2014, Brad Pitt accompanied Angelina Jolie to promote her film "Maleficent." That same month, Angelina opened up to ELLE magazine about their almost decade-long relationship: "You get together and you're two individuals and you feel inspired by each other, you challenge each other, you complement each other, drive each other beautifully crazy. After all these years, we have history — and when you have history with somebody, you're friends in such a very real, deep way that there's such a comfort, and an ease, and a deep love that comes from having been through quite a lot together."

Wedding bells!

Finally! Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie tied the knot at their chateau in France on Aug. 23, 2014. (They world later learned they'd legally wed nine days earlier on Aug. 14.) The couple shared details with People magazine about the much-anticipated event, from how her dress and veil were decorated with their children's artwork to the fact that only 20 friends and family members were in attendance. Angelina later revealed that she was changing her name to Angelina Jolie Pitt.

Stepping up

Team effort! When Angelina Jolie came down with chicken pox and had to miss the premiere of her film "Unbroken," four other Jolie-Pitts came to her rescue. Brad Pitt walked the red carpet with kids Maddox, Pax and Shiloh, who all rocked suits. Brad's parents also attended to support their daughter-in-law's flick in December 2014.

Supportive spouses

After Angelina Jolie made the decision to have her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed in March 2015, she and Brad sat down for a rare interview with "Today" in November 2015. Brad spoke about when he first found out that Angie's blood test revealed she could have signs of early-stage ovarian cancer. "I was out in France, and Angie called me and I got straight on a plane to return," he said. "Seeing my wife have to be her strongest and knowing that it's the scariest news is terribly moving. And not being there is a horrible feeling." He further spoke about how her surgery strengthened their relationship. "It was just another one of those things in life that makes you tighter, and she was doing it for the kids, and she was doing it for her family so we could be together," he said. Angelina was grateful to have Brad through it all. "I knew through the surgeries that he was on my side and that this wasn't something where I was going to feel less of a woman because my husband wasn't going to let that happen," she said. "To face these issues together and speak about them and talk about what it is to be human, I think can be a beautiful thing."

Another film together

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt co-starred in 2015's "By the Sea" — the first time they'd appeared in a movie together since 2005's "Mr. & Mrs. Smith." In the film about a crumbling marriage, Brad played an American writer named Roland while Angelina — who also wrote and directed the movie — starred as his wife, Vanessa. The movie, set in a picturesque seaside resort in 1970s France, was shot in the weeks following Brad and Angie's wedding in lieu of a honeymoon. The movie marked the first time she was credited as Angelina Jolie Pitt.

Happy together

Although they played a couple with a tumultuous relationship in "By the Sea," Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were smiling from ear to ear when they left a screening of their movie at the DGA Theater in New York City on Nov. 3, 2015.

Award-winning love

When Angelina Jolie accepted the WSJ Magazine Innovator Award for Entertainment and Film in New York City on Nov. 4, 2015, she did so with Brad by her side. In her moving acceptance speech, she spoke about their children. "My children are innovators. All children are… For me, in my art of films as a director or writer, I try to listen to my mother and bear my soul and to listen to my kids and make a mess and to play and be free." E! News reported that Brad kissed her forehead and gave her a big hug after the speech. "They were very lovey with each other and you could tell by the way he looked at her he was so in love," a source told the outlet. "Brad had his hand on Angelina's back the whole night."

When Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt attended the "By the Sea" film premiere in Los Angeles on Nov. 5, 2015, they showed off some serious PDA! Brad held Angelina close throughout the evening.

Divorce rumors

In early 2016, divorce rumors swirled around Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt in part because they hadn't been publicly photographed together over a period of several months. As seen here, Angelina was spotted without Brad at LAX International Airport with her growing kids — Shiloh, Zahara and Pax — on March 7, 2016.

Tension at home

Angelina Jolie was loving life in London. According to an Us Weekly report, she wanted to sell the family's estate in France, Chateau Miraval, and focus on furthering her political career in London, but Brad Pitt didn't want to give up the property. The magazine reported that the home issue had caused serious tension for the couple.

Angelina's future plans

Angelina Jolie continued to meet with world leaders as a Special Envoy for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and in June 2016, she spoke with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry to mark World Refugee Day at the All Dulles Area Muslim Society in Sterling, Virginia. In the summer of 2016, reports claimed she would be teaching at Georgetown University, but those were later debunked.

Divorce filing

On Sept. 19, 2016, Angelina Jolie filed divorce papers to end her marriage to Brad Pitt, citing irreconcilable differences. The documents revealed she was seeking sole physical custody of their six children and wasn't requesting spousal support. The filing came after a mysterious incident on a private plane sparked a Child Protective Services investigation of Brad that later cleared him of any wrongdoing.
