Toni Morrison, the first African-American woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, passed away on Aug. 5 in New York. She was 88. An author of 11 novels, she won the Pulitzer Prize in 1988 for "Beloved." Over the course of her life, she received many awards for her writings, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012.
