'TRL' chart-toppers: Where are they now?

If you were a teen between the late '90s and mid '00s, then you definitely ran home after school to watch your favorite artists on MTV's "Total Request Live." (You might even have been one of the lucky fans shrieking along at a taping IRL!) In honor of the 10th anniversary of the end of the original iteration of "TRL," which wrapped on Nov. 16, 2008, Wonderwall.com is taking a look back at some former stars of the show, starting with Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst. Keep reading to see what he and more of the biggest "TRL" chart-toppers are up to now…

Limp Bizkit went on hiatus in 2006 but reunited three years later. During the break, frontman Fred Durst (who looks a whole lot shaggier these days) directed two movies: "The Education of Charlie Banks" and "The Longshots." After reuniting, the band briefly spent time on Cash Money Records — and even collaborated with Lil Wayne! But despite announcing a new album titled "Stampede of The Disco Elephants" in 2013, the band hasn't released an LP since 2011's "Gold Cobra." In September 2018, Fred filed to divorce his third wife, makeup artist Kseniya Beryazina, after six years of marriage. The rocker, who has a daughter from his first marriage and a son from another relationship, lost his home to the wildfires that devastated California in early November 2018.

When "Total Request Live" premiered on Sept. 14, 1998, the Backstreet Boys held the No. 1 spot with "I'll Never Break Your Heart." BSB topped the "TRL" charts with pretty much every other video they released, including "All I Have To Give," "I Want It That Way" and "Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely."

The Backstreet Boys churned out albums throughout the late '90s and then took a brief hiatus after the 2000 release of "Black & Blue" as Nick Carter pursued a solo career. He reunited with Brian Littrell, Kevin Richardson, A.J. McLean and Howie Dorough for 2005's "Never Gone," and they've been going strong ever since. In 2013, the group celebrated their 20th anniversary with a world tour that spanned more than two years. They also released their eighth studio album, "In a World Like This," through their own record label, K-BAHN. Two years later, they released a documentary, "Show 'Em What You're Made Of." In March 2017, they kicked off a two-year residency show, "Larger Than Life," in Las Vegas, which will wrap up in 2019. They released a hit single, "Don't Go Breaking My Heart," in mid-2018, and their ninth studio album, "DNA," is due in 2019. On the personal front, all five guys are married with kids now!

With "…Baby One More Time," Britney Spears was both the first female and the first solo artist to break up the boys' club of *NSYNC, Backstreet Boys and Korn that initially dominated the "Total Request Live" charts day after day. Later, for the series' final countdown, that video reigned supreme as the most iconic "TRL" video of them all.

Britney Spears has endured some very public difficulties over the years, but these days, she's back on top. On Dec. 31, 2017, her four-year "Piece of Me" residency show in Las Vegas finally came to an end. (In the midst of her run, she also released her ninth studio album, 2016's "Glory.") But she didn't stay out of work for long: In late 2018, she announced that she'll star in a new Vegas residency, "Domination," starting in February 2019. The superstar — who has two sons, Preston and Jayden, with ex-husband Kevin Federline — has been seeing her "Slumber Party" music video co-star Sam Asghari since late 2016. Before him, she romanced Charlie Ebersol, David Lucado and Jason Trawick, to whom she was engaged.

You can't think "Total Request Live" without thinking *NSYNC. Justin Timberlake and the guys (seen here with "TRL" host Carson Daly) spent 1998 battling back and forth with Backstreet Boys for the No. 1 spot on "Total Request Live."

*NSYNC ultimately broke up in 2002, but Justin Timberlake had the same "TRL" success as a solo artist. The guys reunited as a one-off in 2013 when they performed together at the MTV Video Music Awards when Justin was honored with the Video Vanguard Award. Other than that, however, they've maintained separate careers: Joey Fatone and Lance Bass have both focused on hosting jobs; JC Chasez collaborated with Blues Traveler; and Chris Kirkpatrick appeared in Nick Carter's movie, "Dead 7." The guys, who reunited in 2018 to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, are almost all family men now. Justin and wife Jessica Biel have a son, Lance Bass and his husband are pursuing surrogacy to have a baby, Chris Kirkpatrick and his wife have a son and Joey and his ex-wife have two daughters.

Destiny's Child brought hits like "Lose My Breath" and "Soldier" to the "Total Request Live" charts — as well as their unforgettable, matchy-matchy looks. Later, Beyonce would continue the streak as a solo artist. (Would you expect anything less from Bey?)

After Destiny's Child called it quits, Beyonce continued to skyrocket to absurd levels of fame, releasing six insanely successful albums as a solo artist, plus a hit collaborative album, 2018's "Everything Is Love," with husband JAY-Z. The duo, who hit the road for two wildly popular "On the Run" world tours, have been increasingly open about issues in their relationship (namely, his infidelity) in recent years. They also share three kids: daughter Blue Ivy and twins Sir and Rumi. Bey remains tight with her former DC bandmates, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams, who joined her onstage during the 2013 Super Bowl Halftime Show and the 2018 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. The three ladies also sang together on Kelly's 2013 R&B album, "Talk a Good Game," and on Michelle's 2014 gospel album, "Journey to Freedom." On a personal note, Kelly — who's had stints on "Empire" and the Australian version of "The Voice" in recent years — has a son with husband Tim Witherspoon, while Michelle, who's been vocal about her mental health struggles, got engaged to pastor Chad Johnson in early 2018. The duo's reality show, "Chad Loves Michelle," debuted on OWN in early November 2018.

Not only did 2006's "SOS" mark Rihanna's first No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, but it was also her first "Total Request Live" chart-topper. "Umbrella," "Disturbia" and more "TRL" hits soon followed.

Rihanna released her eighth album, "Anti," in early 2016. She's also become a bona fide movie star, with roles in "Ocean's 8," "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets," "Battleship" and more. The multi-hyphenate, who reportedly spent part of 2018 working on a mysterious project with Donald Glover, has a love life that's almost as buzz-worthy as her career: She had high-profile relationships with Chris Brown, Drake and Matt Kemp before hooking up with Saudi billionaire Hassan Jameel.

Not only did Eminem score lots of hits as a solo artist on "Total Request Live" — like "The Real Slim Shady," "My Name Is" and "Lose Yourself" — but he also topped the charts with his band, D12.

In August 2018, Eminem released his 10th studio album, "Kamikaze," which includes the single "Venom" from the Marvel movie of the same name. But that's not all he's done within the realm of Hollywood in recent years. He also produced the battle rap dramedy "Bodied," which debuted in November 2018, and portrayed himself in 2014's "The Interview." The super-private rapper, who has one biological daughter and two adopted daughters, had another major milestone to celebrate in 2018: 10 years of sobriety.

From "What A Girl Wants" to "Dirrty" to "Ain't No Other Man," Christina Aguilera saw video after video hit the top spot on "Total Request Live."

In 2018, Christina Aguilera released "Liberation," her eighth studio album and first since 2012's "Lotus." The singer-actress, who made her feature-film debut in 2010's "Burlesque," voiced a character in 2017's "The Emoji Movie," had a small role in the 2018 sci-fi indie "Zoe" and portrayed herself in the 2018 Melissa McCarthy comedy "Life of the Party." She also had a stint on "Nashville" and served as a coach on "The Voice" off and on between 2011 and 2016. Christina has a son, Max, with ex-husband Jordan Bratman and a daughter, Summer Rain, with longtime fiancé Matthew Rutler.

Not only did 50 Cent hit the top of the "Total Request Live" charts with songs like "In Da Club" and "P.I.M.P.," but the rapper performed on the "TRL" finale.

50 Cent seems to spend more time in front of the camera than behind the mic these days. Aside from playing Kanan on the Starz series "Power" (he also produces the show), he's appeared in movies like "Southpaw," "Den of Thieves," "Escape Plan" and "Spy." The executive producer of "The Oath" has been so successful as a content creator, Starz shelled out the big bucks to sign a four-year development deal with him. According to Variety, it could be worth as much as $150 million — which should help the father of two settle his bankruptcy debt. (In 2016 — after two years in the courts — a judge finally ruled that 50 will pay $23 million to his creditors through 2021.) With so much on his plate, it's no wonder the rapper hasn't released an album since 2014's "Animal Ambition" — even though he's been promising for years to drop his sixth studio album, "Street King Immortal," any day now.

Sure, Mariah Carey had lots of No. 1 songs on "Total Request Live," like "We Belong Together" and "Touch My Body." But she'll always be remembered for the time she showed up at "TRL" unannounced with an ice cream cart and stripped down for host Carson Daly.

Mariah Carey's 14th studio album, 2014's "Me. I Am Mariah… The Elusive Chanteuse," was the lowest selling of her career and failed to produce a hit single. She'll test her luck again with new album "Caution," which drops on Nov. 16, 2018. (Though if her first two singles are any indication, things don't look good.) Like Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys, the diva has tried her hand at Las Vegas residencies, headlining "Number 1 to Infinity" from May 2015 to July 2017 and "The Butterfly Returns" from July 2018 to February 2019. She also appeared in "Precious" and "The Butler," starred on the 2016 reality show "Mariah's World" and served as a judge on "American Idol." Mariah, who's currently dating backup dancer Bryan Tanaka, was briefly engaged to Australian billionaire James Packer, following her breakup from husband Nick Cannon, with whom she shares twins Moroccan and Monroe.

Pop-punk band blink-182 made us LOL with their hilarious music videos. And even though "What's My Age Again" never hit No. 1 on the "Total Request Live" charts, it was included in the show's final countdown.

Pop-punkers blink-182 took a major hiatus — during which they each worked on side projects, including a reality show for drummer Travis Barker and the band Angels & Airwaves for Tom DeLonge — between their 2003 self-titled album and 2011's "Neighborhoods," their sixth studio album. In early 2015, Tom, who has a son and a daughter with his wife, officially left the band over longtime issues with Travis, who has a son and a daughter with ex-wife Shanna Moakler, and Mark Hoppus, who has a son with his wife. Alkaline Trio frontman Matt Skiba has served as the group's third member ever since, recording blink's 2016 album "California" and performing with them as part of their 2018 Las Vegas residency, "Kings of the Weekend," which was delayed after Travis, who survived a deadly 2008 plane crash, developed blood clots in his arms. Since he parted ways with blink, Tom has focused on expanding his "Poet Anderson" series of novels. He also released a 2015 solo album.

Only a month after winning the crown on "American Idol," Kelly Clarkson won the top spot on "Total Request Live" with "Before Your Love." The hits kept coming, with songs like "Since U Been Gone," "Behind These Hazel Eyes" and "Walk Away."

Kelly Clarkson released her eighth studio album, "Meaning of Life," in 2017. She's also served as a coach on "The Voice" off and on since 2012. Up next, she'll voice the lead character in the animated musical "UglyDolls" and headline her own eponymous daytime talk show on NBC. In 2013, she married Reba McEntire's former stepson, talent manager Brandon Blackstock. They now have two kids: daughter River Rose and son Remy.

It took Usher a bit of time to make his way to the top of the "Total Request Live" charts (2004's "Yeah" was his first No. 1), but his adorable baby face was always a welcome addition to the show.

Usher released his eighth studio album, "Hard II Love," in 2016, the same year he portrayed boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard in "Hands of Stone." He dropped "A," a collaborative album with Zaytoven, in October 2018. The multi-hyphenate, who's faced some troubles in his personal life in recent years, also served as a coach on "The Voice" in 2013 and 2014. As for those troubles? Usher spent three-years fighting for custody of his two sons with his first wife, Tameka Foster, between 2009 and 2012. Then, a month before he was awarded primary custody, one of Tameka's three boys from previous relationships died after sustaining a brain injury during a jet-skiing accident. In September 2015, Usher quietly married second wife Grace Miguel in Cuba — only to call it quits less than three years later. The breakup followed Usher's highly publicized legal battle against multiple people who accused the singer of knowingly infecting them with STDs.

Whoa! Remember when Good Charlotte looked like this? The band saw hit after hit reach the top of the "Total Request Live" charts with songs like "Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous." In fact, "The Anthem" was dubbed song of the year for 2003.

Nowadays, Good Charlotte's Madden brothers are truly living lifestyles of the rich and famous, complete with A-list wives: Joel Madden is married to Nicole Richie, with whom he has two kids, and twin Benji Madden wed Cameron Diaz in 2015. The following year, the band released their sixth studio album, "Youth Authority," after a six-year hiatus. They dropped their seventh album, "Generation Rx," in September 2018 and have been touring recently in support of their new tunes.

Kid Rock seemed pretty at home hanging with Carson Daly on "Total Request Live." Maybe because the "Bawitdaba" singer was a frequent guest on the show.

Kid Rock left rap-rock behind and is reppin' a different musical style these days. His latest effort, 2017's "Sweet Southern Sugar" — his 11th studio album — is country-rock (but real heavy on the country). In 2016, the Donald Trump-supporting singer performed at the Republican National Convention. He then launched a fake 2017 Senate campaign, which he later admitted was all a publicity stunt. That same year, the father of two, who was previously married to Pamela Anderson, got engaged to longtime love Audrey Berry. He also became a grandfather in 2014 when his son welcomed a baby girl.
