Here's a closer look at the Queen Mary Fringe Tiara. The headpiece was commissioned by its namesake — the paternal grandmother of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II — in 1919 from royal jeweler Garrard. It was originally a necklace that had been a wedding day gift to Mary from Queen Victoria. In 1936, the tiara was gifted to Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother who later lent it to her eldest daughter, then still Princess Elizabeth, on her wedding day in 1947.

A a few hours before Princess Elizabeth (now queen Elizabeth II) married Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten, Duke of Edinburgh (now Prince Philip) at Westminster Abbey in London on Nov. 20, 1947, the tiara she'd chosen snapped. Thankfully, one of the jewelers from Garrard was on hand to repair it in time for the ceremony, though if you look closely, you can see a slight gap between the spikes where the hasty fix was made.

Princess Eugenie of York borrowed the Greville Emerald Kokoshnik Tiara from grandmother Queen Elizabeth II on her wedding day in 2018. The accessory is made of brilliant and rose-cut diamonds set in platinum with six emeralds on either side. It was made by Boucheron in 1919 "in the fashionable 'kokoshnik' style popularized in the Russian Imperial Court," the palace explained, and bequeathed by its original owner, Dame Margaret Greville, to Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother in 1942. (Those diamond and emerald drop earrings, however, were a wedding gift from new husband Jack Brooksbank.)

Princess Margaret wore the Poltimore Tiara on her wedding day in 1960. The diamond crown was crafted by Garrard in the 1870s for Lady Florence Poltimore. "It was purchased for her at auction in January 1959. It is not absolutely clear whether Margaret, her sister the queen or her mother actually paid for it," Mahnaz Ispahani Bartos, a vintage jewelry dealer and scholar with expertise on Princess Margaret, told Town & Country.
The Poltimore Tiara that Princess Margaret wore for her 1960 wedding was sold at auction in 2006 — four years after her death — for $1.7 million.

"The diamond bandeau is English and was made in 1932, with the entre brooch dating from 1893," the palace explained. "This brooch was given as a present to the then-Princess Mary in 1893 by the County of Lincoln on her marriage to Prince George, Duke of York. The bandeau and the brooch were bequeathed by Queen Mary to [her granddaughter Queen Elizabeth II] in 1953."
