10 Reasons we're obsessed with Woody Harrelson

Woody Harrelson has gone from the small screen to blockbuster roles and done pretty much everything in between. The Texas native is widely celebrated for his incredible acting skills, wry sense of humor and laid-back demeanor. From the "Hunger Games" franchise to HBO's "True Detective," we've seen a great deal of Woody over the past few years and we can't wait for more! 1. He's a self-proclaimed "happy hippie"

Woody Harrelson's laid-back beach-bum attitude reigns supreme even though he's a highly acclaimed actor with four Golden Globe and two Oscar nominations to his name. It's attributed to his veganism, living full-time in Hawaii and pledging to live the life of a "happy hippie." He traded the Los Angeles lifestyle for Costa Rica before choosing Maui as his family's place of residence. Woody endorsed Maui in his own, quirky fashion by telling an interviewer on YouTube, "It's got the beauty of Costa Rica, but with better produce."

2. He's a versatile actor

We have to hand it to Woody Harrelson — his characters never disappoint! His breakout role came in 1985 on "Cheers" when he was just 24 and played bartender Woody Boyd. Other notable roles include Woody as Billy Hoyle in the box-office hit "White Men Can't Jump," one-handed bowler Roy Munson in "Kingpin" and serial killer Mickey Knox in "Natural Born Killers." The list goes on and on, though his most recent memorable roles include starring as Detective Martin Hart on the HBO crime drama "True Detective" and Haymitch Abernathy in the "Hunger Games" film series.

3. He's a big traveler

Woody Harrelson is big on travel and loves to explore living life off the grid. In 1991, the actor went to Kenya and lived in a tent on the outskirts of Nairobi for several weeks to "get away from it all." Hey, sometimes we all need a break.

4. He's a family man

Woody is always surrounded by girls, girls, girls! Woody's been with his wife, Laura Louie, since meeting on the set of "Cheers" nearly three decades ago. The long-time lovebirds share three daughters together, Denni Montana, 24, Zoe Giordano, 21, and Makani Ravello, 10.

5. He's overcome a lot

Talk about a tough childhood… Woody Harrelson's father Charles was a hitman who was convicted of killing two people and suspected of more murders. He eventually died while serving a life sentence. Woody spoke to The Guardian about his father's whereabouts growing up: "I think [my parents] separated when I was 7. But he was gone a lot before that, in prison. Away and back. Away and back. It wasn't like he was there all the time prior to that."

6. He's a prankster

In addition to being a "happy hippie," Woody Harrelson also has a very dark sense of humor. That may sound like a contradiction, but for Woody, it's all in the name of fun! The actor played a serious gag on Liam Hemsworth while shooting was underway on "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2." Woody told The Independent, "I am one of those guys who does sometimes like to make people laugh. I did one prank on April Fools' Day where I got our makeup artist to come over to my house and make my face look like I'd been in a bad bike wreck and skidded, blood everywhere… I called Liam and told him to come to the hospital to pick me up."

7. He's best friends with J.Law

"The Hunger Games" co-stars Woody Harrelson and Jennifer Lawrence are ride-or-die besties. J.Law told Vanity Fair, "Woody Harrelson is one of my closest friends in the entire world." Woody showered her with praise in a Vanity Fair interview saying, "Jennifer doesn't have a trace of arrogance… She's not trying to put on any airs or be anyone she's not. She's the real deal. She's just this frickin' amazing gal from Kentucky who hit it big." How much fun would beers with these two be?

8. He was in a band called Manly Moondog and the Three Kool Kats

Not much information is available about Woody Harrelson's old jam band, but it did exist sometime near the end of the "Cheers" era, and you can watch the footage of his band here. Knowing all we do about Woody, it makes sense that his band would be called Manly Moondog and the Three Kool Kats — slightly psychedelic, gleefully ambiguous and super-chill.

9. He's into advocacy work

Although he's no longer fond of herbal healing himself — he revealed in March 2017 that he's stopped smoking pot — Woody Harrelson is an activist for drug reform, supporting the legalization of marijuana and hemp. He's a vegan (for ethical reasons) and also an active promoter of UNICEF, PETA and the Red Cross.

10. He's a champion for good causes

Woody Harrelson went on Stephen Colbert's show to promote his movie "The Messenger" in 2012 and ended up shaving his head to show solidarity with the troops in Iraq. Stephen, a huge supporter of the troops, asked Woody if he would go bald to show his support for our fighting men and women and Woody happily obliged. During his shave (done by Stephen), the two jokesters sang "The Star-Spangled Banner" in unison.
