What to watch, stream or see in theaters over the 2019 holiday season

'Tis the season! What better way to spend the holidays than with a cup of eggnog, some roasted marshmallows and a holiday-friendly film or special? As we gear up to spend the next few weeks lounging around with family and friends, Wonderwall.com has put together a holiday watchlist so you don't have to… starting with "Elf"! This 2003 holiday flick starring Will Ferrell is about a Christmas elf named Buddy who travels all the way from the North Pole to New York City in hopes of reconnecting with his unaffectionate biological father (played by James Caan). While in the Big Apple, Buddy also develops a romance with fellow department store employee Jovie (played by Zooey Deschanel). This film will surely bring you a ton of holiday happiness — after all, the best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear! "Elf" is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.

"Little Women" in theaters Dec. 25

Filmmaker Greta Gerwig's adaptation of the Louisa May Alcott novel of the same name hits theaters on Christmas Day, and we seriously cannot wait. "Little Women" stars Academy Award nominees Saoirse Ronan, Timothée Chalamet and Laura Dern as well as Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen and more. Catch it in theaters on Dec. 25!

"Love Actually" on Amazon Prime Video & HBO's streaming services

A true Richard Curtis classic! 2003's "Love Actually" follows the lives of a group of Londoners as they prepare for Christmas. Depicting various types and phases of love, this cheeky film is one that'll definitely get you in your feels (i.e., the Andrew Lincoln cue cards scene). With a star-studded cast including Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Colin Firth, Keira Knightley and Emma Thompson, this British rom-com is filled with a ton of familiar faces. "Love Actually" is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video, HBO GO and HBO Now.

"The Holiday" on Amazon Prime Video

When life feels like it's a little too much, travel across the world and swap homes with a complete stranger! Starring Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Judd Law and Jack Black, "The Holiday" is a definite feel-good watch. When Los Angeles-based workaholic Amanda (Cameron Diaz) and England-based lovelorn columnist Iris (Kate Winslet) need a break from their chaotic lives, they meet on a home-exchange website and decide to trade places for two weeks. The change of scenery allows for personal growth and blossoming romances. This 2006 holiday rom-com is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.

"Jingle All the Way" on Amazon Prime Video & HBO

When a workaholic father (played by Arnold Schwarzenegger) neglects to pick up the hottest toy in town for his son — despite his wife reminding him to do so weeks in advance — he embarks on a hilarious journey to acquire one on Christmas Eve. The 1996 flick "Jingle All the Way" also stars Sinbad as a rival father who's in desperate need of the same sought-after toy! "Jingle All the Way" is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video, HBO GO and HBO Now.

"Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" in theaters Dec. 20

"Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" — the final film in the nine-part "Star Wars" saga — follows the remaining members of the Resistance as they face off against the First Order one last time. Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac reprise their roles, teaming up to try to save the galaxy from the evil entities that threaten to overtake it. Adam Driver again stars as troubled villain Kylo Ren. This highly anticipated space-opera flick debuts on Dec. 20 and we definitely urge you to hop off your couches and into theaters — it's going to be an epic one.

"The Price Is Right at Night: A Holiday Extravaganza with Seth Rogen" on Dec. 23 on CBS

Seth Rogen will appear on the iconic game show "The Price is Right" to try to raise money for the Alzheimer's nonprofit organization he and wife Lauren Miller Rogen founded, Hilarity for Charity. The special, hosted by none other than "Price" star Drew Carey, airs on CBS on Dec. 23 at 8 p.m.

"Rent" on Amazon Prime Video & Hulu

525,600 minutes… 525,000 moments so dear… "Rent" is another movie we had to mention. While perhaps an unconventional pick, the 2005 film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical written by Jonathan Larson takes place during the holidays in 1989 New York City amidst the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The musical drama candidly depicts the everyday lives of characters as they struggle with drug abuse, sexuality, paying rent and getting by as best they can during this harrowing time. The film stars six of the original Broadway cast members including Idina Menzel, Adam Pascal, Anthony Rapp and Tracie Thoms. Rosario Dawson also stars in the Robert De Niro-produced flick, which you can currently see on Hulu and Amazon Prime Video (cue the tears).

"Mean Girls" on Amazon Prime Video

While The Plastics typically advise to wear pink on Wednesdays, we hope they'll make an exception for Wednesday, Dec. 25th! Who could forget the infamous "Jingle Bell Rock" dance number these girls performed at the Northridge talent show? Starring none other than then-teen sensation Lindsay Lohan and fellow screen-stealers Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried and Lacey Chabert, Tina Fey's "Mean Girls" follows newcomer Cady Heron's rise up the social ladder. Filled with all things pink, catty and plastic, the 2004 flick is a perfect, more nuanced type of holiday movie that'll be sure to take you all the way back to the early 2000s and all of its ruffled miniskirt glory. "Mean Girls" can be streamed on Amazon Prime Video.

"Gremlins" on Amazon Prime Video

A Christmas gift gone terribly wrong! After failing to follow three key instructions regarding his strange new pet, a young bank teller accidentally unleashes a population of dangerous, bloodthirsty creatures on his unsuspecting town. The 1984 Christmas classic "Gremlins" stars Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates and Hoyt Axton. Howie Mandel voices Gizmo — the adorable, good gremlin. "Gremlins" is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.

"iHeartRadio Jingle Ball in NYC" on Dec. 20 on The CW

We can't think of a better special to view to get hyped for the holidays! For fans who couldn't attend the iHeartRadio Jingle Ball Tour in person, The CW Network will broadcast the "iHeartRadio Jingle Ball in New York City" as a television special event on Dec. 19 at 8 p.m. The show is filled with performances by stellar musical acts including Taylor Swift, Camila Cabello, the Jonas Brothers and, of course, our girl Lizzo! We're certain this special broadcast will have you jumping out of your seats and belting out your favorite lyrics!

"Just Friends" on Amazon Prime Video

Starring Ryan Reynolds, Amy Smart and Anna Faris, "Just Friends" tells the story of a man who reconnects with his high school crush when he returns home for the holidays. Having moved to Los Angeles years after their high school graduation, Chris Brander (played by Ryan Reynolds) is now a successful, handsome, hotshot Hollywood record producer with one goal in mind: to get the girl (played by Amy Smart)! The film follows Chris as he attempts to redeem his high school self and get out of the friend zone once and for all. "Just Friends" can be streamed on Amazon Prime Video.

"Home Alone" on Disney+ & Amazon Prime Video

Where it all began! Being left alone at home sounds like a pretty daunting situation for a kid, right? Well not for Kevin McCallister! The 1990 family comedy follows young Kevin (played by Macaulay Culkin) as he's forced to fend for himself after his family accidentally leaves for the holidays without him. What he expects to be a carefree staycation quickly turns into a dangerous mission to protect himself and his home from two men who want to rob it. Does this 8-year-old have what it takes to outsmart The Wet Bandits? "Home Alone" is currently streaming on Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video.

"Home Alone 2: Lost in New York" on Disney+ & Amazon Prime Video

While the original "Home Alone" also has a spot on our list, we especially love its sequel, "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York"! After accidentally boarding a plane to New York City, Kevin McCallister finds himself all alone once again — only this time, he's in a completely foreign place. Armed with nothing but his father's credit card and his own wits, Kevin must figure out how to survive in the Big Apple during the holidays. Spoiler alert — he has a whole lot of fun doing it. The 1992 sequel sees beloved child actor Macaulay Culkin reprising his role as the street-savvy kid and boasts a ton of beautiful Manhattan holiday views! "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York" is available to stream on Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video.

"The Kacey Musgraves Christmas Show" on Amazon Prime Video

This charming Christmas special includes performances of classic holiday tunes by none other than — you guessed it — country sensation Kacey Musgraves! With a star-studded list of musical guests to help her sing these iconic Christmas tracks, including Zooey Deschanel on "Mele Kalikimaka," James Corden on "Let it Snow" and Lana Del Rey on "I'll Be Home for Christmas," this 44-minute show is the perfect way to belt your heart out in the comfort of your own home. "The Kacey Musgraves Christmas Show" premiered on Nov. 29 on Amazon Prime Video and is available to stream now.

"The Night Before" on Amazon Prime Video

In the comedy "The Night Before," when three lifelong best friends realize that their days of hard partying together are coming to an end, they reunite on Christmas Eve for one final go. When Ethan (played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt) comes across three tickets to the Nutcracka Ball — aka the hottest holiday party in all of New York City — he embarks on an adventure with Isaac (played by Seth Rogen) and Chris (played by Anthony Mackie) to get there. The only problem is that they don't exactly know where 'there' even is. As a result, their night of debauchery quickly becomes derailed by miscommunication and boiling tempers. "The Night Before" is currently available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.

"It's a Wonderful Life" on Amazon Prime Video

Holiday classic "It's a Wonderful Life" tells the story of George Bailey, an exhausted businessman who tries to end his life on Christmas Eve but is ultimately saved by his guardian angel. Throughout the course of the film, we follow George as he comes to realize his own self-worth and the importance of persevering when times get tough. The 1946 fantasy flick garnered five Academy Award nominations and is regarded as one of the most beloved films ever. "It's a Wonderful Life" can be streamed on Amazon Prime Video.

"Gwen Stefani's You Make It Feel Like Christmas" on Dec. 19 on NBC

"Gwen Stefani's You Make It Feel Like Christmas" is a holiday special featuring guests Blake Shelton, Seth MacFarlane, NE-YO, Chelsea Handler and Ken Jeong. The "Hollaback Girl" singer will deliver fun skits and songs off her holiday album, "You Make It Feel Like Christmas" — including the title track with boyfriend Blake! Catch this special on NBC on Dec. 19 at 10 p.m.

"Serendipity" on Amazon Prime Video

"Serendipity," which takes place during the Christmas season, tells the story of two people (played by Kate Beckinsale and John Cusack) who meet again 10 years after they first laid eyes on one another. One believes in love at first sight while the other believes in destiny, and what ensues is a charming, serendipitous journey to decode the universe's messages and figure out if they're meant to be together. Set in New York City, it's hard not to feel the Christmas magic while watching this adorable love story unfold. "Serendipity" is currently available on Amazon Prime Video.

"A Home for the Holidays with Idina Menzel" on Dec. 22 on CBS

The titular Tony Award winner and "Frozen" franchise star hosts "A Home for the Holidays with Idina Menzel," a television special that celebrates adoption stories. The CBS broadcast includes special performances from Idina, Kelly Rowland, Adam Lambert and NE-YO in addition to moving segments that delve deeper into the real stories of families who've chosen adoption. "A Home for the Holidays with Idina Menzel" will air on Dec. 22 at 9 p.m. on CBS.

"The Santa Clause" films on Disney+ & Amazon Prime Video

"The Santa Clause" trilogy is a definite Christmas staple! Starring "Home Improvement" alum Tim Allen in the titular role, these holiday films tell the story of an ordinary man who accidentally becomes Santa Clause after the real one falls from his roof the night before Christmas. The first film in the series debuted in 1994 and was followed by two sequels: "The Santa Clause 2," which came out in 2002, and "The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause," which debuted in 2006. "The Santa Clause" films are all available to stream on Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video.

"1917" in theaters Dec. 25

Written and directed by Sam Mendes, "1917" is a highly anticipated World War I film slated to hit theaters on Christmas Day. Starring George MacKay, Dean-Charles Chapman, Andrew Scott, Richard Madden, Colin Firth, Benedict Cumberbatch, Mark Strong and more, the film tells the story of two young British soldiers who, in the spring of 1917, must cross enemy lines and warn a battalion of an impending ambush before they're decimated. The epic war flick hits theaters on Dec. 25.

"Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2020" on Dec. 31 on ABC

"Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2020″ will feature exciting performances from some of your favorite artists in four cities: Miami (the Jonas Brothers); Hollywood (Green Day, Paula Abdul, Dan + Shay, Dua Lipa, Megan Thee Stallion, Salt-N-Pepa and Ciara, who also hosts); New Orleans (Usher, Sheryl Crow and "Pose" star Billy Porter, who hosts); and New York City (Post Malone, BTS, Sam Hunt, Alanis Morissette and the cast of Broadway's "Jagged Little Pill"). Ryan Seacrest will once again guide us through the end of 2019 when things kick off at 8 p.m. on ABC on Dec. 31.

"While You Were Sleeping" on Disney+ & Amazon Prime Video

After a woman makes an ill-timed comment at the hospital, she is incorrectly assumed to be the fiancée of a man who is in a coma. Making matters worse? She ends up falling for his brother! "While You Were Sleeping" stars Sandra Bullock, Peter Gallagher and Bill Pullman and takes place during the holidays. This festive flick should be on your must-watch radar! The 1995 Christmas rom-com is available to stream on Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video.

"Die Hard" on Amazon Prime Video

NYPD officer John McClane travels to Los Angeles in hopes of reconciling with his estranged wife at her holiday work party, but things take a dangerous turn when the event is overtaken by terrorists. As the only man to escape, John becomes tasked with saving the remaining hostages and bringing down the terrorists. "Die Hard" stars Bruce Willis and also includes appearances from Alan Rickman, Alexander Godunov and Bonnie Bedelia. This 1988 action flick is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.

"The Nightmare Before Christmas" on Disney+ & Amazon Prime Video

Bored and underwhelmed by his yearly routine of scaring people, Jack Skellington yearns for change. When he comes across Christmastown, he's quickly enticed by the bright lights and holiday spirit. Now, Jack has a new plan — to take control of Christmas! The dark fantasy "The Nightmare Before Christmas" — a true Tim Burton classic — debuted in 1993 and was nominated for an Academy Award for best visual effects and won a Golden Globe Award for best original score. It's currently available to stream on Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video.

"Cats" in theaters Dec. 20

With a seriously star-studded cast including Taylor Swift, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Jason Derulo and James Corden, the 2019 film adaptation of the iconic Broadway musical "Cats" is a unique visual spectacle you won't want to miss. Over one night, the Jellicle cats must choose which one of them will ascend to Heaviside Layer and come back to a brand new life. "Cats" hits theaters on Dec. 20.

"Edward Scissorhands" on Amazon Prime Video

"Edward Scissorhands" is a holiday film that hits differently than the rest. There's something truly special about it — perhaps the refreshing way in which it addresses loneliness, or the measures it takes to celebrate individuality, or how it reminds us that being weird isn't necessarily a bad thing. From the annual Christmas party to Edward's ice sculpture, "Edward Scissorhands" incorporates holiday elements all while exploring what it means to be you. The 1990 Tim Burton film is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.

"Bridget Jones's Diary" on Amazon Prime Video

With much of it taking place during the holiday season, this Renee Zellweger classic is a definite Christmastime watch! When Bridget decides she's in need of some self-improvement, she starts to keep track of everything in her life by writing in a diary. What results is a plethora of hilariously written entries on every subject imaginable — from men to food to falling in love. Bookended by the holidays, this 2001 film charts Bridget's life over the course of one year. "Bridget Jones's Diary" is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.

"Bombshell" in theaters Dec. 20

Based on stories from women who've worked at Fox News, "Bombshell" chronicles how powerful CEO Roger Ailes was held accountable for claims of sexual harassment amid an allegedly toxic, objectifying work culture. The film, which was directed by Jay Roach, stars Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman and Margot Robbie as Fox News employees who dealt with the powerful media mogul, who's played by John Lithgow. "Bombshell" hits theaters Dec. 20.

"Sleepless in Seattle" on Amazon Prime Video

After his wife passes away, Sam Baldwin and son Jonah move to Seattle in hopes of starting anew. On New Year's Eve, Jonah calls into a radio show in an effort to try to find a new wife for his dad. Smitten by Sam's story, an engaged reporter in Baltimore decides to cover it — and develops feelings for him in the process. "Sleepless in Seattle," which came out in 1993, stars Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan and Ross Malinger. The heartwarming flick can be streamed on Amazon Prime Video.

"New Year's Eve" on Amazon Prime Video

Starring notable names including Michelle Pfeiffer, Zac Efron, Lea Michele, Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl, "New Year's Eve" centers on the intertwining lives of a group of New Yorkers on the final night of the year. The rom-com is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
