"The Proposal" hits theaters today, and star Ryan Reynolds did his due diligence on the red carpet at the movie's June 1, 2009 Hollywood premiere. Check out this hilarious clip from the movie and get all the latest info, then find out what Ryan, Sandra Bullock and other celebs had to say about the film.
In "The Proposal," Sandra Bullock, as a pushy boss, forces her younger male assistant (Ryan) to marry her in order to keep her Visa status in the U.S. and avoid deportation to Canada. We asked native Canuck Ryan Reynolds whether he gave Sandra any pointers on acting more like a real Canadian.
"Yeah, I signed her up for some hockey lessons, and I told her to apologize a lot more, but none of these things did she really follow through on," explained Reynolds.
And what of his own marriage to Scarlett Johansson? Was it also sped up for citizenship reasons?
"Yes," he admitted. "I wanted to upgrade to really expensive health care."
Just as we suspected!
Sandra Bullock was in great spirits at her new movie premiere. While she was proud to show off her naked body with Ryan in the movie, she was a little more modest about pretending to make out with "Twilight" star Kristin Stewart at the recent MTV Movie Awards.
"Oh my god! Don't mention that!" she squealed with faux-embarrassment. "Kristin, I'm sorry. She's one of the coolest chicks I've met in a long time. The coolest."
Is it just us or has Betty White been doing more promotional stomping for "The Proposal" than either Sandra or Ryan? No wonder the 87-year-old actress was too tired to chat much on the red carpet. She looked radiant in her sky blue blouse, though, and we suspect Ryan Reynolds is a little envious that her "Golden Girl" star may've eclipsed his own.
When we asked Reynolds how the notorious Funny or Die video came about, he responded, "It was a documentary that we shot some time ago to better understand the reaches of Betty White's evil as best we could."
Evil? Seriously? So was Scarlett worried Ryan might fall under her siren spell?
"Betty White is a threat to marriages everywhere," Ryan advised us. And all this time we thought Rue McClanahan was the wily golden woman to watch out for.
Unfortunately Ryan Reynolds wasn't the only one to bad-mouth Betty White on the carpet that night. Cloris Leachman, who we assumed came in support of her old friend, revealed that she was actually there to undermine the star.
"She's such a slut!" Leachman exclaimed.
We didn't want to fan the fires of that decades-long feud, so instead we asked Cloris about her views on marriage, particularly California's Prop 8.
"We're such a*******, aren't we? I can't believe it. We're so stupid, we are. And delayed. It's not fair."
You heard it here first, folks: Cloris Leachman supports gays, but will eagerly slander Betty White.
Malin Akerman, on the other hand, only had positive things to say on the red carpet. "Ryan and I are Canadian, but Sandra had to play Canadian, so we were giving her pointers. You know, we always say, 'Aye!'" Malin explained. "Sandra does speak German, though. She's fluent. Maybe you didn't know that. I didn't."
So, were there any Canadian jokes being cracked on set?
"No way! There were too many Canadians. [Jokers] would have gotten their a***s kicked!"
Actress Melora Hardin also walked the carpet for her film's premiere and had a few thoughts on the institution of marriage. For instance, she too would consider marrying someone to help him stay in the United States.
"Well, yeah, if I liked them a lot or if I thought they were great and a little sexy, it wouldn't hurt. It would also depend how my husband felt about that!" Um, yeah. Probably.
"Bachelorette" star Jillian Harris was excited to attend the premiere of her compatriots' film. Like Ryan and Malin, Harris also hails from Canada and claims, "It's all about balance. I call myself a 'polished redneck' because I can go out for a nice dinner and I know a good glass of wine, but then the next day, I'll go on an ATV, go camping, pop open a beer — it's the best of both worlds."
But has Jillian ever fallen in love out in the wilderness, like, oh, say, Alaska? "You'll have to watch the rest of the 'Bachelorette' season to find out!"
Right. We should've seen that one coming from a continent away.
