The Fate of the Furious characters: Where we left off

We've been fans of the "Fast & Furious" franchise since the original film debuted in 2001, but even we have to admit that 16 years and seven films later, it's become a bit tricky to keep up with the ever-revolving cast of characters and plot lines. In honor of the eighth film in the series, "The Fate of the Furious," which debuts on April 14, 2017, Wonderwall.com is taking a look back and where we left off with Dom, Letty and the rest of the gang. Keep reading for a refresher on the various subplots and storylines from the "Fast & Furious" franchise…

Letty and Dom

After she was presumably murdered in 2009's "Fast & Furious," the fourth film in the franchise, Michelle Rodriguez's Letty Ortiz returned as an amnesiac in 2013's "Fast & Furious 6." She and Vin Diesel's Dom Toretto spent most of 2015's "Furious 7" rekindling their romance, and ultimately, she remembered that they'd secretly tied the knot before her supposed death. According to reports, "The Fate of the Furious" will pick up as the longtime lovers are celebrating their honeymoon in Cuba.

Hobbs

After he was badly injured during a battle with Deckard Shaw at the beginning of "Furious 7," Dwayne Johnson's Defense Security Service agent Luke Hobbs busted out of the hospital to assist his pals in their final showdown against the black ops assassin. The lawman, who first appeared in "Fast Five," will be forced into an uneasy alliance with his former nemesis when they both land in the same supermax prison in "The Fate of the Furious."

Elena

Hobbs landed in the hospital after sacrificing himself to protect Elsa Pataky's Elena Neves (pictured in "Fast & Furious 6"), his fellow Defense Security Service agent, during a showdown with Deckard Shaw at the beginning of "Furious 7." When "The Fate of the Furious" picks up, the former Rio street cop, who fell for Dom in "Fast Five" and went on the lam with him, will have parted ways with the DSS in order to put some distance between herself and her former lover. (They parted on good terms when he discovered that Letty was still alive in "Fast & Furious 6," and Elena joined the DSS.)

Deckard Shaw

Hobbs tossed Jason Statham's Deckard Shaw into a supermax prison at the conclusion of "Furious 7," in which he served as the gang's chief antagonist. The villainous black ops assassin first appeared in a mid-credits scene at the conclusion of "Fast & Furious 6" when he murdered Sung Kang's Han Seoul-Oh in retaliation for what happened to his younger brother, Owen, in "Fast & Furious 6."

Owen Shaw

Luke Evans' Owen Shaw — who took in Letty and made her part of his crew of mercenaries after she lost her memory in an explosion — has been comatose since the conclusion of "Fast & Furious 6," in which he served as the gang's chief antagonist. He landed in the hospital after he was thrown from a crashing plane during "Fast Six" and briefly popped up in "Furious 7" — unconscious and covered in burns — while receiving a visit from his brother.

Tej and Roman

When we left off with Ludacris's Tej Parker (a tech expert and mechanic) and Tyrese's Roman Pierce (a skilled driver and Brian O'Conner's childhood pal) — both of whom first appeared in "2 Fast 2 Furious" — the duo were playfully fighting over the new member of the crew, Ramsey. "Tej and Ramsey's productive partnership has left Roman looking on from the sidelines … wheels turning as he tries to insert himself into the equation," reads an official synopsis of "The Fate of the Furious."

Ramsey

Nathalie Emmanuel's Ramsey joined the crew in "Furious 7" after they rescued her from Djimon Hounsou's Mose Jakande. The mercenary-terrorist kidnapped the hacktivist in a bid to get ahold of a computer program she created, a super-advanced tracking device called the God's Eye. She'll work closely with Tej as the crew's resident tech experts in "The Fate of the Furious."

Mr. Nobody

Kurt Russell's Mr. Nobody assisted the gang in their mission to take down Deckard Shaw in return for their help stealing the God's Eye from Mose Jakande in "Furious 7." The high-level government operative took a bullet during a shootout after the two villains teamed up in the seventh installment in the series, but he's back for more action in "The Fate of the Furious."

Mia and Brian

"Furious 7" concluded with Paul Walker's Brian O'Conner and Jordana Brewster's Mia Toretto (pictured together in "Fast Five") pregnant with their second child and retiring from the game to raise their son, Jack. Neither the late actor (RIP!) nor his longtime screen partner — whose love story spans all the way back to 2001's "The Fast and the Furious" — will appear in "The Fate of the Furious."
