Ellen Pompeo almost quit "Grey's Anatomy" over "really toxic environment"
During an interview for Variety's Actors on Actors series that hit the Internet on June 5, Ellen Pompeo revealed that "there were many moments" when she wanted to leave "Grey's Anatomy." Explained the actress, "The first 10 years we had serious culture issues, very bad behavior, really toxic work environment. … But after Season 10, we had some big shifts in front of the camera, behind the camera. It became my goal to have an experience there that I could be happy and proud about, because we had so much turmoil for 10 years. My mission became, this can't be fantastic to the public and a disaster behind the scenes. Shonda Rhimes and I decided to rewrite the ending of this story. That's what's kept me. Patrick Dempsey left the show in Season 11, and the studio and network believed the show could not go on without the male lead. So I had a mission to prove that it could. I was on a double mission."

"That's a been a stretch for me because I've never been a very public person. I think I put myself on the show to try to push the boundaries like that and grow spiritually and psychologically, but I'm OK with letting that piece of it go." She added of her decision to leave the show, "Something had to give. And I've been lucky enough to do the talk show for nine years. And so that felt like the right move is, 'OK, I've done that. And I've fully explored it.' And now it's time to do other creative ventures."
