French Montana has revealed that his hospitalization last year was due to exhaustion and drug abuse.
At the time of the two-week hospitalization, most of which was in the ICU, French was reportedly suffering stomach and cardiac issues. However, in a chat with XXL magazine, the rapper admitted that exhaustion and drug abuse were the reasons for the hospitalization.
He's now been sober for over a year.
It was "a combination of a lot of things: being fatigued, dehydrated, you know, losing myself chasing money, chasing the wrong things," he said. "Too much drinking, too many pills, you know, boom."
French said he often mixed Adderall and Percocet as a "hobby," but that eventually led to an addiction.
"I feel like 90 percent of musicians on that," he said. "It was just overdoing something for too long, and, to the point where, now sober is becoming my new high. People seen I was out of control, not me, you know what I'm saying? 'Cause, you know, it's almost like, you know, working out. You don't see you getting big 'cause you see yourself every day. It's the same thing with you being out of control."
Last December, doctors ordered French to have at least 30 days of bed rest at home. Now, one year removed from the ICU, the 36-year-old has a different philosophy.
"The new thing is the triple R thing: You gotta be rich in health, rich in spirit and rich with money," he said. "If all you got is money, you don't got nothing. And that's the thing that I got closer to, you know. And you got closer to God, too."
Now clean and working out consistently, French said his personal health victory is every bit as meaningful as his success in the music world.
"I think that was like the hardest thing I ever did in my life, to snatch myself back," he continued. "So, for me to stop everything and just step back, that was like one of my biggest accomplishments. … So that was the day, it was Nov. 21, [2019] last year. And since that day, I never had a drink. I just made a year."
