Hilary Duff had an ugly start to her Memorial Day weekend.
Early in the day on Saturday, May 23, the "Younger" star's name was trending on Twitter, thanks to a conspiracy theorist who claimed in a since deleted twitter thread that she was trying to sell her 8-year-old son, Luca, into the sex trafficking market, according to E! News.
The Twitter user also alleged Luca's father, Hilary's ex-husband Mike Comrie, had been seeking custody of Luca for years.
The posts appeared to have been inspired by an Instagram video in which the camera pans past a photo of Luca without any clothes on. In the clip, the actress has clearly censored the image with a sticker to protect her son's privacy.
When she came across the accusations on Twitter, Hilary — who has previously called for better protection from the paparazzi for celebs with kids — clapped back, calling the suggestion she's trying to sell her son "disgusting."
"Everyone bored af right now I know..but this is actually disgusting….. whoever dreamed this one up and put this garbage into the universe should take a break from their damn phone," she tweeted Saturday morning, adding, "Maybe get a hobby."
Hilary's rep also slammed the rumor as an "internet lie" in a statement to E!.
"Let me say this in the strongest terms, this is all a fabricated disgusting internet lie, created and perpetuated by trolls and idiots," the star's spokesperson told the outlet.
"Hilary's own post this morning is all that needs to be said on the matter," the statement continued. "Everyone who knows Hilary is fully aware what an amazing mom she is and that requires no further comment. If only people with this much time on their hands used their energy to solve real problems in the world."
It's worth noting the detail about Mike wanting custody of Luca seems off, as well. The two split in 2014 after four years of marriage and have remained close while coparenting their son.
Speaking to Cosmopolitan in 2016, Hilary called her ex "amazing," adding that she "wouldn't choose anyone else to co-parent with," and that she and Mike are "really good friends and care a lot about each other."
The actress married singer and record producer Matthew Koma in the couple's front yard in Los Angeles shortly before Christmas last year.
Their daughter Banks was born in October 2018.
