Kelly Dodd is feeling the wrath (again) from many of her Instagram followers after donning a hat at her recent bridal party, a hat that many felt mocked the Black Lives Matter movement.
On Oct. 4, the "Real Housewives of Orange County" star posted a multitude of photos to her Instagram from her bridal shower. One of the images, showed her wearing a hat, presumably a gift, that read "Drunk Wives Matter," a play on the Black Lives Matter movement.
The headgear didn't sit well with many of Kelly's 747,000 Instagram followers.
"Kelly your hat is not funny!!!!!!!!!," one person commented. Another said, "Tacky hat for a tacky woman."
The reality TV star was called "out of touch," "insensitive" and "callous" for happily wearing the hat.
Naturally, a congregation of followers came to Kelly's aid and noted that they liked the hat and thought it was humorous.
Many fans, meanwhile, were disturbed that photos from the bridal showed the guests eschewing social distancing and face masks.
"No social distancing here no mask , haven't we learned yet? Look at Trump and he's in the hospital," one person said, to which Kelly replied, "He's 74 and fat!!" After another person slammed her for that response, Kelly said, "You get sick and get better!!"
The reality TV star is set to marry Fox News reporter Rick Leventhal on Oct. 10.
Kelly has been on the defensive several times in 2020 for her comments — or sometimes lack thereof — about ongoing issues. In July she posted about the series of events that had happened so far this year. She made no direct mention of the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor or other unarmed Black men and women killed by law enforcement. Instead, she referred to the "riots across the US."
"Peaceful protests, black men and women killed by police, and the list goes on…of course, 'riots' would be the word of choice 😡," one person commented.
On May 25, the "Real Housewives of Orange County" star downplayed the coronavirus pandemic (at least on a local level,) celebrating that she could finally eat at a restaurant and that few people appeared to be wearing masks while out and about. "I love it," she said in an Instagram video. Then, while inside a restaurant, Kelly continued her happiness that mask-wearers were at a minimum. "Yeah, no one's wearing masks here in Orange County. Yup, because no one is dying here of the virus," Kelly said, as two servers, both wearing masks, approached her table. At the time, 133 people in her hometown had died from COVID-19.
She later attempted to "clarify" her comments.
"I was by no means minimizing deaths that have been caused by this virus, and I feel for their loved ones," she said. "However, Orange County has 133 deaths out of 3 million people — much lower than most."
In April, she said the coronavirus was "God's way of thinning the herd." A few weeks later she compared the virus to the flu, a talking point that has been disproved by scientists many times.
"But how many people die on a daily basis? … Well, people are going to die!," she said at the time. "I'm sorry to tell ya."
