When Kanye West tweeted over the Fourth of July that he's running for president, his wife Kim Kardashian West quietly supported him by retweeting his post and adding an American flag as her only comment.
But a few days later, as news of Kanye's "rambling" Forbes interview took over the internet, fans began speculating about the rapper and Yeezy designer's mental health.
Now, multiple outlets are reporting Kim's concerned, too, given her husband's history of suffering from bipolar disorder.
"She understands that he goes through this from time to time. He's very passionate in everything he does, which Kim respects, but she doesn't always agree with his actions," a source tells E! News.
"She knows that Kanye is very serious about running for president and she publicly supports him," the source adds.
Privately, however, Kim's response to Kanye's White House bid and bizarre Forbes interview — in which he claimed, among other things, that Planned Parenthood is "the devil's work" and that if he can't run as a Republican because of Donald Trump's candidacy, he'll run as a member of the "Birthday" party "because when we win, it's everybody's birthday" — is reportedly less positive.
"Everyone in the family is concerned when he starts acting like this," says the E! source. "They want to help him in any way they can and sincerely care about his well-being."
On Friday, another insider echoed those sentiments in an interview with People.
"Kanye has been doing well for a long time. In the past, he has suffered both manic and depressive episodes related to his bipolar disorder. Right now, he is struggling again," the source said, implying Kanye's in a manic phase.
According to People's source, Kim is in Los Angeles with the couple's four kids while Kanye remains on his ranch in Wyoming, where the couple and their four children spent part of the past few months.
"Kim is concerned, as well as her whole family," the source added. "It's super stressful for Kim, because Kanye's behavior is very unpredictable. She is worried. The episodes usually last for a few weeks and then things go back to normal. Kim hopes it will be the same this time."
Earlier in the week, TMZ cited Kardashian-Jenner family sources who said Kanye "suffers a serious bout with his bipolar disorder" about once a year and that his family and friends "are worried, but they believe things will stabilize as they have in the past."
Kanye began speaking publicly about his mental health issues in 2018, when he told TMZ Live he was no longer taking medication to control his bipolar disorder because he believes it interferes with his creativity.
Kim has shared how Kanye's disorder affects her family, too, telling Vogue in 2019 that "it's an emotional process," but since she and the family can sense when his "episodes [are] coming," they "know how to handle them."
She added that "traveling a lot does set him off," which might explain why he hasn't rejoined Kim and their kids in Los Angeles.
As of Saturday, July 11, Kim, who has supported Planned Parenthood, vaccinations and other topics Kanye railed against while speaking to Forbes, had not posted further about her husband's political aims.
