Fashion hits and misses from the 2020 BAFTAs

Every year the British Academy Film Awards are handed out by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, and stars from all over the world are nominated for the UK's highest entertainment honor. Now that the 2020 BAFTAs have come to an end, Wonderwall.com is checking in on the fashion from this year's big night. First up? A fashion miss from Florence Pugh in Dries Van Noten. The star's getup appeared to be comprised of a simple black minidress underneath a gargantuan fuchsia cape-like design comprised of frills from a collaboration between the designer and Christian Lacroix. From the messy ties down the center to the insanely dramatic train, we just couldn't get behind this loud fashion decision. Though we did appreciate the chunky platform black heels. Margot Robbie's looks haven't thrilled us all award season, but this Chanel number might be the most boring selection to date. Though the star's black gown featured some lace elements and a peplum layer at the waist, overall it felt like a dreary selection for such a big night. Next up? This award season we've seen plenty of red and pink gowns, and very few in the clashing color palette have worked. Unfortunately for Laura Dern, her Valentino gown wasn't one of them. The star's sleeveless getup featured some overdone embellishments along the bodice and an otherwise simple and straightforward skirt that felt like a disconnect.

Absolutely acing maternity style on the red carpet? Jodie Turner-Smith, who turned up in this glorious golden Gucci gown. The star's halter-style gown featured a subtle all-over sparkle, and showed off her baby bump perfectly.

When Prince William and Duchess Kate arrived all eyes were on the duchess in this dreamy white and gold gown. The Alexander McQueen dress featured short sleeves, a full skirt and gold embellishments throughout. And it actually wasn't the first time we've seen her in the gown! Kate wore it previously in 2012 to an official dinner with Malaysia's Head of State.

Thanks to Hildur Gudnadottir, we now know there is such a thing as too much fringe. The star's pale silver frock featured fringed embellishments that starting at the shoulders and draped all the way down to the ground — giving off a strange curtain-like effect. Making matters worse? She paired this odd design with stark black shoes, which seemed like an odd contrast to the pale shade.

A+, Olivia Colman! The star looked lovely in this Alexander McQueen gown, which featured floral embellishments atop the bodice, sheer sleeves and a simple pleated black skirt. Now let's get a better look at her beautiful earrings…

Olivia Colman added some color with some gorgeous drop earrings, which included blue and purple stones that complemented her Alexander McQueen gown and dangling diamonds.

Lulu Wang arrived in quite the ensemble at the BAFTAs, rocking this multi-layered Simone Rocha. Though we loved the pink floral print — and that sweet lace trim! — we couldn't get behind the two layers of skirts followed by pants, or the casually gathered sleeves. It was a shame, as we did love the way she added those strappy white sandals, too!

Naomie Harrie stunned in this slinky gunmetal gray Michael Kors Collection gown, which featured thin straps, studding and a knee-high slit. We loved the textures on this standout gown, and the way she paired it with those strappy silver heels to keep with the metallic theme.

Rebel Wilson's red and black BAFTAs look felt too matronly for the funny star. The Prabal Gurung frock featured three-quarter-length sleeves and a half-red, half-black bodice that flowed into a sash-like detail, but overall the color and silhouette gave us a too-mature vibe.

Velvet was certainly trending at the BAFTAs, and Gillian Anderson embraced the luxe fabric with this strapless black ankle-length gown. Naomi Ackie opted for a Valentino dress in this neon green hue. Though we appreciated the bold color choice, we weren't wild about the funky silhouette — which featured one sleeveless side and one full sleeve. Despite not liking the dress, we did appreciate that phenomenal lengthy braid.

We loved the surprising color combo of navy and white on Jessie Buckley! The star stepped on the carpet in this custom Miu Miu sensation, which featured white embellishments on the bodice and luxurious navy velvet. Let's take a closer look…

Just check out the intricate feathered detailing and subtle lace around the neckline, which also included sparkly studded embellishments throughout. The textures were a nice complement to the otherwise all-velvet gown. And we appreciated the way she went sans necklace to the keep the attention on this show-stopping dress.

Things were going alright for Edith Bowman… until she added accessories. The star arrived in this subtly metallic long-sleeved frock with a pleated skirt, which was fine enough, but then added a mustard yellow belt and inexplicably bright blue gloves to the mix to turn it into a big fashion disaster.

The high-low skirt trend was unfortunately still alive and well on the BAFTA Awards red carpet. Take Vick Hope's Tran Hung design, which featured this bizarre bottom half that was part miniskirt, part feathered nightmare with a train.

A high-low silhouette that worked on the BAFTAs carpet? Ella Balinska's floral Giambattista Valli number. The romantic frock, which featured an all-over pink flowered design and plenty of lovely ruffling, was actually a minidress covered with a matching cape detail that flowed into a dramatic train. The only element we weren't wild about? The way she styled it with black heels, which felt like a sharp contrast to the pink and white gown.

Yikes! Lady Victoria Hervey certainly didn't find herself on the best dressed BAFTA Awards lists in this getup. The socialite and former "Love Island" contestant arrived in this bizarre ensemble which included plenty of cutouts, busy embellishments and sheer tulle, all combining into one big fashion nightmare.

We certainly saw a lot of fringe on the BAFTAs red carpet, but our favorite variation came from Alice Eve, who rocked this white and silver Ralph & Russo gown. When the fringe-covered frock moved it made for some seriously cool photos, just like this one!

We weren't wowed by Zazie Beetz's dull BAFTAs pick. Her custom Marina Moscone dress in this dull dark mahogany shade felt instantly forgettable, and the simple strapless silhouette with a slit didn't help matters. She added metallic strappy heels and a near-perfect matching lip to the mix, but those elements couldn't transform this miss into a hit.

Rooney Mara's Givenchy gown brought some serious drama, with its dramatic oversized sleeves and full skirt. But it was the sheer paneling along the sides that surprised us the most…

Not only did a side view show off Rooney Mara's Givenchy gown's sheer paneling, but also proved it had the best addition of all — pockets! She finished off her look with a funky updo and a bold red lip.

Though we liked the contrasting silver and maroon shades, we couldn't get behind Vanessa Kirby's sparkly Valentino gown. The most offending factor? That chunky belt emblazoned with the fashion house's signature V. Despite not loving the dress, we did approve of the strappy metallic sandals she paired it with.

One of our favorite former "Love Island" contestants, Megan Barton-Hanson, embraced Old Hollywood glam at the BAFTAs, stepping on the carpet in this deep burgundy gown. The frock featured an off-the-shoulder cut with tight long sleeves and draping along the bodice. We loved the rich color and the way the reality star paired it with an updo and dark red lip.
