The entertainment industry's biggest party is here again! The Golden Globe Awards are usually a fun-filled, boozy event where anything goes — you never know what you're going to get at the Globes. Last year's telecast was pretty political. Will this year follow suit? What were the unexpected moments? How will hosts Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh do at the helm? Here's your guide to what had everyone buzzing and talking at the 76th Annual Golden Globe Awards at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills on Jan. 6, 2019, starting with the show's opening… So, why were Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh chosen as hosts of the 2019 Golden Globes? "We were the only two people left in Hollywood who haven't gotten in trouble saying something offensive," Sandra quipped, kicking off the show. The duo's opening monologue was different than years past where previous hosts roast the celebrities in the audience. Instead, Andy and Sandra praised the talent while pretending to roast them (i.e. Gina Rodriguez is "from heaven" and Bradley Cooper is "hot.") The most controversial joke was when Sandra sent antacid to a table to prevent from them getting "Asian flush." The duo certainly played it safe, yes, but it worked. Perhaps the funniest moment was when the hosts told Jim Carrey to move seats because he was sitting in the "film" seating section while his show, "Kidding," is on TV. Jim obliged in comedic fashion. Before the end of the monologue, Sandra got emotional, telling the crowd, "I said yes to the fear of being on this stage tonight because I wanted to be here and look out onto this audience and witness this moment of change. I'm not fooling myself. Next year could be different," she said. "I wanted to be here to look out into this audience and witness this moment of change… Right now, this moment is real. Trust me, it is real. Because I see you and I see you. All of these faces of change — and now, so will everyone else."

The real star of the red carpet

The real star of the red carpet was someone you probably don't know — a woman serving bottled water. Twitter dubbed her "the Fiji water girl" after the brunette popped up in the background of many, many, many red carpet photos holding a tray of water while wearing a bright blue dress. She was there behind Idris Elba, Heidi Klum, Jeff Bridges, Dakota Fanning, Jim Carrey, Richard Madden, Judy Greer and so many others. Serve it, girl! The Internet, as it is always so quick to do, soon put her in memes. (Fans had her serving water in "Bird Box," "Pulp Fiction" and "The Wolf of Wall Street," to name a few.) The Fiji water girl = The queen of the photobomb.

Sandwich fairy

Not all heroes wear capes! Nobody was going hungry at the Golden Globes thanks to Melissa McCarthy. The actress was slyly handing out ham and cheese sandwiches. "I've been handing them out to everyone," she told Variety. "Next year, I'm bringing hot dogs." Melissa said she bought 30 sandwiches from Los Angeles' super-popular Joan's on Third. Many of Hollywood's biggest names were thankful. (Olivia Colman gave the meaty delights a shout-out from the winner's podium!) "How did she get them in here?" Jessica Chastain wondered, adding, "but it's a good idea because by the time you get into the ballroom, dinner has already been served, and you're always so hungry."

Sartorial nod

Honoring the past! Lady Gaga hit the Golden Globes red carpet in a periwinkle blue Valentino Couture gown that was a clear nod to an epic lavender dress that Judy Garland wore in the 1954 version of "A Star is Born." Gaga, of course, has been showered with praise for her performance in 2018's "A Star is Born," and she's expected to take home a lot of hardware during the 2019 award season. However, things weren't so great on the set of her first-ever film early on. She confessed to Ryan Seacrest during E!'s red carpet preshow that she cried while filming her very first scene. Co-star and director Bradley Cooper, she explained, was "trying to get me out of my head." She recalled Bradley ad-libbing in the first scene the filmed, leaving her somewhat confused. "He said, 'Are you OK?' Gaga told Ryan. "I started crying and I kind of let it go and the scene happened as it was written, but he taught me how to be present on set."

Hot mic drama!

Is there a feud brewing between Chrissy Metz and Alison Brie? The "This Is Us" star was caught calling the "GLOW" star a "bi—" on a hot mic, People magazine reported. This occurred when Chrissy was ending her interview on the Golden Globes Facebook Live pre-show. The magazine reported that Chrissy was asked to help introduce Alison on the other side of the carpet. The camera then panned to Alison with Chrissy's audio still live. "She's such a bi—," Chrissy seemingly said (listen to audio here), likely unaware that her microphone was still on. Alison didn't appear to have heard the comment. Later in the night, Chrissy took to Twitter to insist the story is false, writing, "It's terribly unfortunate anyone would think much less run a story that was completely fabricated! I adore Alison and would never say a bad word about her, or anyone! I sure hope she knows my heart." Preshow host AJ Gibson later came to Chrissy's defense, telling Page Six in an email, "I was standing on stage with Chrissy and thought she called Alison a babe. Chrissy is one of the kindest women in Hollywood and is so supportive of other talented women. If she did happen to use the 'other' word, I promise it was 1,000 percent a joke." Alison also responded via Instagram. "Nothing but love for @chrissymetz!!" she wrote along with a photo of herself and the NBC actress. "Rumors can't keep us down!"

Best actress upset

Call it an upset! It seems that everybody just assumed that Lady Gaga — who took home the best original song prize for co-writing and singing "Shallow" from "A Star is Born" — was a shoo-in for the best actress in a drama prize for her performance in the movie… and then Glenn Close's name was called for her work in "The Wife," a movie that follows a woman who questions her life choices after spending decades bowing down to her narcissistic husband. Glenn herself was shocked to hear her name then shed tears during her speech in which she drew laughs, joking, "It's called 'The Wife' — I think that's why it took 14 years to get made," as well as a standing ovation when she shared how her work in the film made her think of her own family dynamics. "I'm thinking of my mom who really sublimated herself to my father her whole life and in her 80s she said to me, 'I feel like I haven't accomplished anything,' and it was so not right," Glenn explained. "I feel what I've learned through this whole experience is women, we're nurturers, that's what's expected of us. We have our children and we have our husbands, if we're lucky enough, and our partners, whoever, but we have to find personal fulfillment. We have to follow our dreams. We have to say, 'I can do that and I should be allowed to do that.'"

A new award tradition is launched

The first standing ovation of the night went to Carol Burnett as she received an award named after her, the inaugural Carol Burnett Award, which is meant to go to an actor or actress who has made outstanding contributions to television on or off the screen. Carol did just that. "I'm really gobsmacked by this," she said onstage. "Does this mean I get to accept this every year?" During her speech, Carol recapped her career, detailing how things were so different decades ago. Many of her shows would never see the light of day in today's world. "Here's to reruns and YouTube," she said. As she ended her heartwarming speech, Carol fittingly said, "I'm so glad we had this time together." She then tugged on her ear. Perfect.

"Queen" of the night

There's no doubt about it — they are the champions! "Bohemian Rhapsody" had a big night, taking home two of the most notable awards of the evening: one for best motion picture drama and one for best actor in a drama for Rami Malek, who starred as Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in the biopic. The wins were somewhat surprising, as "A Star is Born" was considered by many to be the frontrunner. During the acceptance speeches, the late rockstar was praised. "Thank you, Freddie, for giving me the joy of a lifetime," Rami said. "I love you, you beautiful man. This is for and because of you, gorgeous."

Surprise appearance

You didn't expect to see Taylor Swift, did you? Surprise! The singer-songwriter was a surprise presenter at the 2019 Golden Globes and walked on stage with Idris Elba to hand out the awards for best original score and best original song. Taylor's beau, Joe Alwyn, also attended the awards. In an interview with "Entertainment Tonight" on the red carpet, Joe didn't rule out acting with Taylor in a film. "It's not planned at the moment," he said, "But who knows?"

The devil's in the details

Christian Bale plays former Vice President Dick Cheney in "Vice," but he clearly doesn't admire the man: He seemingly referring to him as the devil. After winning the Golden Globe for best actor in a movie musical or comedy, the British actor got a little political. "Thank you to Satan for giving me inspiration on how to play this role," he said. He joked that he was cast as businessman-turned-politician because the filmmakers needed someone unlikeable and "charisma-free." "I'm gonna corner the market in playing charisma free —holes. Whaddya say, Mitch McConnell next?"

Stealing the show

The Golden Globes got a dash of Old Hollywood with Dick Van Dyke's presence — and he showed that he's still sharp as a whip. The 93-year-old legend got a standing ovation as he came out to present the highlights of his movie "Mary Poppins Returns" alongside star Emily Blunt. The dapper actor, who starred in the original "Mary Poppins" in 1964, couldn't help but crack a joke after looking out at all the young actors and actresses in the audience. "I spotted Carol Burnett out there and thought, my God, I know her!" he quipped. Still got it.

Challenge issued

Regina King threw the gauntlet down while accepting her award for best performance by a supporting actress in any motion picture for her work in "If Beale Street Could Talk." While on the red carpet earlier in the night, she spoke of the ongoing importance of the Time's Up movement. During her speech, she said that even though she knew it would be hard, she's challenging herself to make sure that everything she produces over the next two years will be at least 50 percent female. "I challenge anyone out there who is in a position of power… to challenge yourselves and do the same," she said to rapturous applause.

A lot of work!

Emma Stone's 2019 Golden Globes dressmakers deserve a prize for all the hard work that went into her look! The "The Favourite" nominee's pink Louis Vuitton Atelier gown (she's an ambassador for the brand) was embellished with 63,000 twisted glass tubes "to create a scale pattern on the dress, which is also made of over 49 feet of pink mousseline fabric," People magazine reported. More than 30 embroiderers took more than 800 hours to craft the confection.

White-hot night

Jamie Lee Curtis got a LOT of love on Twitter after she hit the 2019 Golden Globes red carpet in head-to-toe white — including her hair, which she accentuated with a pale lip and a smokey eye. Fans called her everything from a "silver fox" to "white-hot" to "ice queen."

2019 Golden Globes Ambassador

Idris Elba isn't nominated this year but he still has his fingerprints all over the Golden Globes… sort of. The actor's 17-year-old daughter, Isan Elba, is serving as the 2019 Golden Globes Ambassador. Previous ambassadors (who until 2017 used the title Miss Golden Globe) include Jamie Foxx's daughter Corinne Foxx in 2016, Bruce Willis and Demi Moore's daughter Rumer Willis in 2009 and Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson's daughter Dakota Johnson in 2006. During the E! red carpet preshow, Isan told Ryan Seacrest she's taking the job seriously — and having fun: "You'll see me onstage holding the trophies. And I get to see cool celebrities. I mean, it's a big deal — [I'm] very excited." So what advice did Idris give his little girl? "I told her to keep her back straight, elegance is presence. Smile and nod politely even if you can't understand what anyone's saying. If you feel like you're going to pass out, don't," he quipped. "She's good, you know, she's so confident. I'm just, like, really proud. I can't help but be a dad. [I'm] just trying to be cool."

Where was Lin-Manuel Miranda?

Lin-Manuel Miranda was not in attendance at the 2019 Golden Globes despite his nomination for best actor in a movie musical or comedy for his work in "Mary Poppins Returns." However, he has a pretty good reason for missing the evening: He's in Puerto Rico preparing to (briefly) return to the role that made his famous. "I'm playing Hamilton in a production we're opening here to raise as much money as we can for artists and artistic organizations still struggling to recover in the wake of Hurricane Maria," he told E! News. He's also giving fans a chance to see him star in "Hamilton" one last time. "We're going to raffle off 50 pairs of tickets to closing night," he said. "All of the money will go to the Flamboyan Arts Fund, which is raising money for artists in Puerto Rico."

Sweet mother-son moment

Regina King's biggest accomplishment, according to her 22-year-old son (left), is her success as a mother. She's "super mom," Ian Alexander Jr. told Ryan Seacrest on E!'s Golden Globes red carpet preshow. "Usually, people will ask me, 'What's it like having Regina King be your mother,'" Ian said. "She's just a super mom, really. She doesn't really let bad work days or anything come back and ruin the time that we have, so it's really awesome to have a mother that… I can enjoy spending time with and all that." Regina is no slouch in the acting department either, as she's nominated for two 2019 Golden Globes — one for best actress in a supporting role in any motion picture for her work in "If Beale Street Could Talk" (she won!) and best actress in a limited series or movie made for television for her performance in "Seven Seconds." Oh yeah — she plays a mom in both roles.

The emerald engagement ring reappears!

Michelle Yeoh delighted fans of her hit movie "Crazy Rich Asians" when she showed up on the 2019 Golden Globes red carpet wearing the huge emerald engagement ring from the film. The ring doesn't just belong to her character — it's actually Michelle's in real life too. When the original mocked-up ring was shown to director Jon M. Chu, it didn't look that great — but Michelle told him not to worry. "She's like, 'I have a better ring than that,'" he told Vulture — and she brought in the incredible emerald sparkler from her own jewelry collection.

Always joking

Leave it to Amy Poehler (a former Golden Globes host) and Maya Rudolph to poke fun at another award show. Prior to presenting the prize for best movie screenplay, Maya pulled out an oversized jewelry box and looked toward her friend. She faux-shook and proposed to Amy, calling her the "love of my life." Amy acted shocked, saying she never expected it. Clearly, the bit was a jab at the proposal that happened during the 2018 Emmys. Amy worried that they were stealing a little thunder from the award presentation. "Don't worry, it's just best screenplay," Maya quipped.

New couple alert!

One day after making their red carpet debut as a couple at a pre-Golden Globes event, Jim Carrey and his "Kidding" co-star Ginger Gonzaga showed up hand-in-hand at the main event. The loved-up duo was all smiles as they hugged on each other on the red carpet at the Golden Globe Awards. On "Kidding," the 56-year-old actor's character dates Ginger's recurring character, so chalk this one up to life imitating art. As if their red carpet PDA wasn't enough indication, Jim's rep confirmed that he's dating the 34-year-old actress.

Sarah Palin couldn't make it

Sacha Baron Cohen went with his plan B when it came to his date for the 2019 Golden Globes. Plan B, by the way, was his wife, Isla Fisher. The comedian initially asked Sarah Palin to be his +1 to the award show, but she never responded to him — of course, it was a long shot that she would. After being nominated for "Who Is America?," Sacha released a statement inviting the politician to join him (he mocked Sarah on his show, but the scenes didn't make the air). "Meanwhile Ms. Palin, despite being cut from the show, I hope you will accept my invitation to be my date for the ceremony," he wrote. Let's be honest, Isla is a pretty good fall-back plan.

Bleep!

Language, Patricia Arquette, language! While accepting her award for best actress in a limited series or movie made for television for her work in "Escape at Dannemora," the actress spoke about her female DP (director of photography), her dialect coach and the person who put in her prosthetic teeth each day… At least, it seemed that way. Her language was foul enough that NBC censored a portion of her speech — the first bleeps of the night! In the press rom, Patricia apologized. "I didn't plan that. It was an unplanned f-bomb," she explained. "I'm so sorry." Holding up her trophy, she then joked, "You can't take it back, can you?"

Newly redesigned award

The Golden Globe Award trophy looks different in 2019! The statuette is now, according to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which hosts the Globes, "a spectacular 24-carat gold-plated design, retaining the heritage and history of the previous iconic Golden Globe with wrapped filmstrip accolade enhanced by modern touches." There are two versions: "the all-gold version for the film and TV winners, and the golden globe on top of a black marble base for the special awards, the Cecil B. DeMille and the new Carol Burnett trophies for excellence in cinema and television," the HFPA explained. It's also bigger. "Last year's edition was 10.75 inches tall with a base width of 3.5 inches, while this year's trophy is 11.5 inches tall with a base width of 3.75 inches." There's no longer a marble base on the prize that goes to film and television winners, and the base is now cylindrical instead of cuboid. It also weighs a hefty 7.8 pounds — 2.3 pounds more than the old statuette!
