On Feb. 24, 2019, the Academy Awards returns and promises an eyeful of some of the hottest celebrity fashions of the year. In anticipation of the big night, Wonderwall.com is going back in time to remember all the weird and wonderful looks worn by the biggest stars at the 1989 Oscars… starting with Demi Moore. The actress and then-wife of Hollywood action star Bruce Willis made waves in this spandex and metallic floral fabric gown that she actually created herself. Using bicycle shorts, nylons, a corset and ample two-tone fabric, Demi's DIY dress didn't win any fashion awards and was widely criticized as a red carpet catastrophe, even though we kind of love it today. With then-wife Mimi Rogers by his side, a very young and extremely handsome Tom Cruise arrived at the 61st Annual Academy Awards wearing a black double-breasted tuxedo and bow tie. Mimi brought a pop of color in her pink-and-black polka-dot gown with sheer embroidered floral shoulders.

Nominated for best actress for her work in the drama "A Cry in the Dark," Meryl Streep stepped out in all-black at the 61st Annual Academy Awards. With her husband, sculptor Don Gummer, by her side, Meryl glided down the red carpet in this off-the-shoulder long-sleeved blouse and black satin skirt combo. We're in love with Meryl's pearl and gemstone choker (and how proud Don looks to be by her side!).

Whoa! Who knew Drew Barrymore and Corey Feldman dated?! The teen couple was perfectly '80s at the 1989 Oscars where Corey radiated some major Michael Jackson vibes in a black and red tuxedo look and Drew donned a little black dress adorned with satin flowers.

Recognize these two famous faces? The future stars of "Sex and the City" and "Iron Man," respectively, were once a couple — and they attended the 1989 Academy Awards together. A young Sarah Jessica Parker arrived on the red carpet wearing a black velvet minidress and matching shawl while her equally baby-faced boyfriend Robert Downey Jr. struck an eccentric pose in this Victorian-style tuxedo with teal satin tie.

Hunky "Dirty Dancing" star Patrick Swayze and his wife, Lisa Niemi, hit the 61st Annual Academy Awards looking like they'd stepped off the set of a James Bond movie. Patrick's sleek black tuxedo was demurely cool and perfectly coordinated with Lisa's strapless black satin gown and matching shawl, which she paired with a simple gold necklace and sexy, slicked-back hair.

Young actors Martha Plimpton and River Phoenix, who were romantically linked at the time, looked surprisingly sophisticated at the 1989 Academy Awards. River, who at just 19 was nominated for best supporting actor for his work in "Running on Empty," wore a subtly striped tuxedo and kept his trademark long hair loose. Martha's creamy silk gown glimmered on the red carpet and gave her an Old Hollywood vibe.

Cute couple alert! Newlyweds Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks (who are still married today!) glowed on the 1989 Academy Awards red carpet. Rita looked ravishing in a strapless red dress with an asymmetrical ruffled skirt while Tom, who was nominated that night for best actor for his work in "Big," kept it classy in a black double-breasted tuxedo. Can we also point out how perfect Rita's curls looked that night?

Were Melanie Griffith and then-husband Don Johnson at the Oscars or a wedding?! The once-married stars (who welcomed actress daughter Dakota Johnson six months later) were in full matrimonial attire at the 1989 Academy Awards. Melanie, who was nominated that night for best actress for her performance in "Working Girl," donned an all-white ballgown with a bosom-bearing princess neckline and ruby-accented pearl choker, while Don looked ever the '80s bridegroom with his shoulder-length hair and classic black tux.

Melanie Griffith's movie star mom, Tippi Hedren, also made a stylish appearance at the 1989 Academy Awards. Celebrating her daughter's first Oscar nomination, Tippi arrived on the red carpet in a fiery red-and-yellow satin gown with an accordion-pleat skirt, cascading scale designs and attached shawl. A glowing Goldie Hawn turned heads on the 1989 Academy Awards red carpet in this strapless beaded gold gown with silver trim along the bust. In addition to accessorizing her gown with a gold shawl, Goldie also had a handsome man on her arm — her longtime partner and "Overboard" co-star Kurt Russell. Kurt and Patrick Swayze (back right) could have been twins with their matching '80s hair and tuxedos!

Glenn Close and Michelle Pfeiffer weren't just two beautiful actresses at the 1989 Oscars — they were also both nominees. Glenn, who was nominated for best actress for her work in "Dangerous Liaisons," wore a stunning black empire-waist gown with a unique, mixed-pattern black lace bodice. Co-star Michelle, who'd earned a best supporting actress nod, kept her look decidedly more modern in this shoulder pad-enhanced tuxedo jacket over a crisp white blouse and floor-length black skirt.

We're wondering if Carly Simon, who won the Oscar for best original song at the 1989 Academy Awards (for "Let the River Run" from "Working Girl"), sought fashion inspiration from the 1988 film "Beetlejuice"? While the singer's fitted black-and-white silk pantsuit made us cringe (sorry, Carly), the look of total joy on her face after receiving her award made up for her unfortunate fashion choice.

Donning nighttime shades, a rose in his lapel and the loose and wavy men's hairstyle of the decade, actor Michael Douglas had a sense of Hollywood cool about him at the 1989 Academy Awards. By his side was then-wife Diandra Douglas, who wore an off-the-shoulder long-sleeved black velvet gown and funky feathered skirt. Diandra upped the '80s style quotient by adding a gold multi-strand choker to her look.

Bombshell actress Bo Derek made a dazzling appearance at the 1989 Academy Awards. The former model played up her brilliant baby blues in a sequined blue blazer, blue velvet skirt and high-collared white blouse. Bo added a few extra blue embellishments to her look with a shiny sapphire belt and turquoise necklace.

Please excuse us while we try to pinch young Chad Lowe's cheeks. The "Life Goes On" alum was 21 at the 1989 Oscars but had the look of a fresh-faced teenage heartthrob. The younger brother of actor Rob Lowe hit the award show donning his trademark spectacles and a multi-hued suit of deep blues and purples that highlighted his beautiful blue eyes.

We're trying to find the words to describe singer-actress Olivia Newton John's dress at the 1989 Academy Awards. The wide, scalloped white collar contrasting with the black, swirl-print dress looked more like a nun's habit than an Oscars gown. Although in style at the time, the excessive shoulder pads in the dress gave the "Grease" alum the frame of a petite linebacker. Olivia's then-husband, Matt Lattanzi, opted for a more timeless look in a classic black tuxedo.

Newlyweds Phoebe Cates and Kevin Kline were breathtaking in all-black at the 1989 Academy Awards. Phoebe's long-sleeved, knee-length dress could have been boring, but the sheer organza neckline with playful swirl embroidery gave her an extra flourish. Kevin, of course, didn't have to try hard to look handsome in his double-breasted tuxedo and oversized bow tie.

"Murphy Brown" actress Candice Bergen brought a special date to the 1989 Academy Awards: her mom, actress-model Frances Bergen. Candice glowed in a sequined neutral blouse and creamy full-length skirt while her mom donned a bold sequined black-and-white long-sleeved patterned dress paired with a simple black sweater.

We're crushing hard on the gorgeous midnight-blue gown that "Moonlighting" star Cybill Shepherd wore to the 1989 Oscars along with opera-length gloves.

"Wild Orchid" star Jacqueline Bisset managed to blend '80s style elements like messy hair, dangling earrings and asymmetrical designs in an astoundingly beautiful way at the 1989 Academy Awards. Wearing an off-the-shoulder pale sage and salmon satin gown, Jacqueline might have been awash in excess fabric, but she still looked lovely. By her side in a dapper black tuxedo was her boyfriend at the time, actor Vincent Perez.

Gene Hackman might have been the star in this photo (and a best actor Oscar nominee that night), but it was his then-girlfriend (now wife) Betsy Arakawa who stole all our attention. While Gene donned a traditional tux, Betsy stunned in this little black dress with a black cheongsam-style lace overlay. Her dress, along with her magnetic smile and perfect, glossy curls made it easy to see why Gene was so smitten with her!

"Vertigo" star Kim Novak proved she still had sex appeal well into her 50s at the 1989 Academy Awards. Wearing a gold-and-black gown with opera length gloves, the former silver-screen siren oozed sensuality.

Father-and-daughter duo John Cleese and Cynthia Cleese were each other's dates at the 1989 Academy Awards. The pair, who were also co-stars in the film "A Fish Called Wanda," were celebrating John's nomination for best screenplay and Charles Crichton's nomination for best director for their film. We love all the little stylish touches John added to his tux, including an oversized bow tie, pocket square and horseshoe tuxedo vest. Cynthia, who was just 18 at the time, kept her look simple in a black velvet dress and matching choker.

"General Hospital" actress Sharon Wyatt hit the 1989 Academy Awards red carpet in sequined '80s style. Wearing a sparkly navy blue gown awash in floral embroidery, Sharon almost looked like a seductive disco ball. Proving she had her finger on the fashion pulse of the decade, the actress also made sure her bangs were properly teased for some all-important added height.
