2. She knows there's more to life than being thin
While she's sporting a slimmed-down figure these days, Adele has no plans "to be a size zero or anything like that," she once told Rolling Stone. She even joked that if she wasn't heading off on a world tour in 2016, you would have been able to "catch [her] back down at the Chinese [takeaway]!"
3. She had the best reaction after meeting Beyonce
Adele was so starstruck after meeting Beyonce that she later fell to her knees and wept. The singer recalled meeting Queen Bey at the O2 Arena in London and also at the 2013 Grammys. "I was basically dribbling as she was talking to me," she recalled in an interview with BBC Radio 1 in November 2015. "Then JAY-Z came over to talk to her but Beyonce was like, 'I'm talking, not now.' He came closer and said, 'Adele, can I just have one minute with my wife?' I was like, 'You know my name?' Then I ran off onto a balcony and fell to my knees, crying." Fast-forward to 2017, when Adele won record of the year and album of the year, beating out Beyonce in both categories, and recognized Queen Bey in both of her speeches.
4. She's a Spice Girls superfan… and was heartbroken when Geri quit
"I was always Geri," Adele said of her favorite Spice Girl during a Carpool Karaoke appearance on "The Late Late Show With James Corden" on Jan. 13, 2016. In fact, when Geri Halliwell — pictured here in her iconic Union Jack dress at the 1997 Brit Awards — quit the girl group, a then-adolescent Adele was beyond distraught. "It was the first time I was truly heartbroken," she added.
5. She has some pretty famous friends
Squads aren't just for Taylor Swift! Adele counts many famous faces as pals, but two of the biggest? Oscar winners Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone!
6. She has an MBE
At the age of 25, Adele was awarded an MBE (that's a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire). She achieved the honor for her services to music and was presented with the medal by Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace on Dec. 19, 2013. For the occasion, she sported a crown-encrusted manicure, natch.
7. She's a doting mom — and has declared her love in ink
Adele has described her son Angelo as her "paradise." She has that word tattooed on the side of her left hand and her son's name inked on her right to symbolize her love for him. She first showed off her permanent devotion at the Glastonbury music festival in Somerset, England, on June 27, 2015.
8. She still gets terrible stage fright
Despite those spine-tingling performances, Adele's knees are still knocking when she takes the stage. In a November 2015 interview with NPR, the artist admitted she gets "so nervous with live performances that I'm too frightened to try anything new." Adele, seen here at the MTV Video Music Awards on Aug. 28, 2011, added, "It's actually getting worse. Or it's just not getting better, so I feel like it's getting worse, because it should've gotten better by now."
9. She's a hopeless romantic and has found her Mr. Right
Adele has described her relationship with longtime beau Simon Konecki as the "ultimate love story." The couple started dating in 2011 and she gave birth to their first child together, son Angelo, in October 2012 (Simon also has a daughter from a previous marriage). But she didn't feel pressure to make things legal at the time, telling Rolling Stone magazine, "We just haven't felt the need to get married. We've got a kid together. I feel like that's a big enough commitment." But she later changed her mind: At the 2017 Grammys, she dropped the bombshell that the two had actually secretly married — referring to Simon as her "husband" in an acceptance speech.
10. She already has a haul of 15 Grammys
Here's where Adele's Grammy success story began — winning the best new artist award in 2009. Since then, she's amassed 15 — yep, you read that right — 15 Grammys! In 2012 alone, she won nearly half of those when she took home six Grammys — joining Beyonce as the only other female artist in the award show's history to achieve the feat in a single night. At the 2017 ceremony, she picked up five more!
11. She's a Bond Girl (sort of)
Adele's music is simply 007-heaven. She wrote the searing ballad and title song for the 2012 Bond Movie "Skyfall" — and the following year bagged an Oscar for best original song.
12. She eclipsed Lionel Richie by reinventing "Hello"
Who hasn't seen the hilarious video mashup of Adele and Lionel Richie singing "Hello" to one another — more than 30 years apart? Lionel's "Hello" was released in 1984, four years before Adele was even born. He saw the funny side of the social media reaction, though, and shared the viral clip on his Instagram account in 2015 accompanied by the caption, "HELLO @adele is it me you're looking for…#hello."
13. Her hair makes worldwide news
To complement her slimmed-down look (which is apparently due to her cutting back on her usual 20 sugars in 10 cups of tea a day), Adele unveiled a stylish new bob in December 2015. She debuted the look during a performance on Britain's "X Factor" and created major buzz around the world with the new 'do!
14. She's not only "Rolling In The Deep"…
…Adele is also rolling in cash! The singer is reportedly worth $135 million. What's not to like about that?
15. She tells it straight — admitting meeting her idol was a letdown
Don't collaborate with your childhood idols — that's Adele's advice, anyway. The singer admitted to scrapping half the songs for her "25" album ahead of its release, including one she didn't even get to finish with musician Damon Albarn, someone she's been a fan of since his days with '90s Britpop band Blur. Adele concluded that she "regretted" even hanging out with him and said the sound didn't suit her album.
16. She's in touch with her emotions
Adele is never afraid to cry in public! The superstar often breaks down in tears at events. She memorably lost it during the end of her first full concert in four years in December 2015, which also aired on NBC as her "Live In New York City" special. A few months later, she got weepy accepting the Global Success Award at the Brit Awards in February 2016. And no one can forget her emotional speeches at the 2017 Grammys!
17. She pretended to be an Adele impersonator
As part of a set-up contest, with a prosthetic nose in place, Adele went undercover as an Adele impersonator and lined up with a bunch of other women who professionally cover her songs. It aired on the British TV special "Adele at the BBC" in November 2015, and it was only when she took the microphone and started singing that the other contestants' jaws slowly began to drop to the floor — and the penny dropped.
18. Her eyeliner is always on point
Adele's pretty green eyes are always perfectly framed with the best-applied eyeliner known to woman. It's become something of her trademark "look."
19. She loves Rihanna as much as the rest of us
Adele wants Rihanna in her squad, stat! She told Rolling Stone of the Barbadian beauty — pictured here hanging out with her at the 2013 Grammys — "maybe Rihanna can be in my squad! That would be really cool. Oh, God. She's life itself, isn't she? I love her."
20. She's a one-name star
She was born Adele Laurie Blue Adkins. These days, simply Adele will do just fine. And of course that singular moniker puts her up there in the upper echelons of music royalty — think Madonna, Beyonce, Prince and Cher.
21. She got her big break on Myspace
Adele joins the likes of Lily Allen in making a name for herself on one of the first social networking websites, Myspace. After a friend posted her demo on the site in 2006, it was quickly noticed by record label executives and resulted in her getting a deal that same year. "It's a great way of getting stuff out there," Adele said at the time about releasing music on social media, according to CNN. "I'd much rather 5 million people heard my music than I earned £5 million. I write bulletins and blogs, and I listen to what people say, maybe too much sometimes."
22. She wrote one of the best breakup songs of all time
Adele's "Someone Like You" is arguably one of the top go-to breakup songs of modern times. Released to critical acclaim off her second studio album, "21," in 2011, the languishing ballad bemoans the end of a relationship and tells the tale of unrequited love. The lyrics are truly heartbreaking, with musings including, "Never mind, I'll find someone like you" and "Sometimes it lasts in love but sometimes it hurts instead." Soooo good.
23. She consoled herself with a burger after a glitchy Grammys performance
Anyone for a burger? Just like the rest of us, Adele turns to comfort food in times of need. The day after her 2016 Grammys performance, which was marred by sound issues, Adele took to Twitter to update her fans. She wrote, "The piano mics fell on to the piano strings, that's what the guitar sound was. It made it sound out of tune. S— happens. X." But it was this follow-up tweet that had us all wanting to give her a high-five. "Because of it though… I'm treating myself to an in n out [burger]. So maybe it was worth it."
24. She's all about female empowerment
During a stop on her world tour in March 2016, this time in Manchester, England, Spice Girls fan Adele reminded us she is all about girl power! While on stage, the singer showed her support for International Women's Day and waxed lyrical about motherhood and feminism. She told the crowd, "I love myself more than ever… and that's something that comes with age. You don't realize just how important it is to have female friends… For every girl, anything you're feeling, another girl has gone through that. No matter what. That's why you need to rally around each other… You need to cherish them."
25. She's not scared to ask for what she wants… even on live TV
During a tribute to the late George Michael during the 2017 Grammy Awards , Adele instantly knew things weren't sounding right. Instead of accepting it, she stopped the performance after one verse. "I know it's live TV, I'm sorry. I can't do it again like last year. I'm sorry for swearing and I'm sorry for starting again. Can we please start it again? I'm sorry, I can't mess this up for him. I'm sorry Ken," she explained, directing her last apology to Grammys producer Ken Ehrlich. Once she started the song "Fastlove" over, it was flawless and moving, resulting in a much deserved standing ovation.
26. She's a social justice advocate
Adele is big supporter of social justice issues and recently expressed her support for the 2018 Women's March — which she attended with celeb gal pals Jennifer Lawrence and Cameron Diaz. "I am so grateful to be a woman, I wouldn't change it for the world," she wrote on Jan. 20, 2018. "I hope I'm not only defined by my gender though. I hope I'm defined by my input to the world, my ability to love and to have empathy. To raise my son to be a good man alongside the good man who loves me for everything I am and am not. I want what's best for people, I think we all do. We just can't agree on what that is. Power to the peaceful, power to the people x #womensmarch2018." Love!
27. She's credited with the resurgence in popularity of vinyl records
Adele's vocals are so amazing that industry insiders credit her "21" album with resurrecting the popularity of physical media and vinyl records. The recording's huge success translated into millions for distributor Proper Music and bucked the assumption that CDs and vinyl don't sell, according to managing director Drew Hill. "We were known as a specialist distributor. In 2011, there was a fire at Sony DADC [part of Sony's worldwide CD network]. They had the Adele record and we offered to help," he told Forbes. Proper Music is now turning over more than $32 million a year. Thanks, Adele!
28. She has an impressive property portfolio
Adele definitely knows how to pick out swanky digs! The British songstress is the owner of a $9.5 million home in Beverly Hills plus two beautiful homes in her native England — a 48-acre, $4.9 million, 18th-century country manor house in East Grinstead and a $6.9 million mews house in London's Kensington neighborhood. According to reports, she's eyeing another property in London — a $36.2 million, seven-bedroom, seven-bath duplex with 24-hour security. Fancy!
29. She's low-key on social media
In the era of over-sharing, Adele is a breath of fresh air on social media. She's only posted on her Twitter account 300 times since 2010 and only has 331 posts on her Instagram page. We're definitely here for the privacy!
30. She believes in self-care
Adele knows when to invest in herself and get some much deserved rest. When the singer damaged her vocal cords at the end of her world tour in 2017, she decided to cancel her final two shows — even though the decision left her "devastated." "On medical advice I simply am unable to perform over the weekend," she wrote in a handwritten letter posted to her social media channels. "To say I'm heartbroken would be a complete understatement." We could all take a lesson from Adele on slowing down and putting our health first!
