"Mary Poppins" fans are finally getting a sequel — nearly 55 years after the film's debut! "Mary Poppins Returns," a direct sequel to the 1964 original, hits theaters on Dec. 19, 2018. Julie Andrews starred as Mary Poppins, a magical and loving woman who descends from the clouds to work as a nanny for the Banks children, in "Mary Poppins."
Since "Mary Poppins" wrapped in 1964, Julie Andrews has grown into a Hollywood icon. She won the Academy Award for best actress for her work in the musical and appeared in "The Sound of Music" the following year. The British actress went on to star in several acclaimed films over the decades including "Hawaii," "Torn Curtain," "Star!," "The Tamarind Seed, " "Victor/Victoria," "Duet for One," "The Princess Diaries" and "Despicable Me." Julie, who has won five Golden Globes, three Grammys and two Emmys, was made a dame in 2000. In 2018, she voiced Karathen in the DC Comics flick "Aquaman." Julie welcomed a daughter, Emma Walton, with first husband Tony Walton in 1962. The couple divorced five years later and Julie married director Blake Edwards in 1969. She shares five children and stepchildren — Emma, Jennifer, Geoffrey, Amy and Joanna — plus nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren with Blake, who died in 2010.

Dick Van Dyke starred as Bert, a cockney jack of all trades who's close friends with Mary Poppins, in "Mary Poppins."
Dick Van Dyke has become an acting legend since "Mary Poppins" debuted in the 1960s. The five-time Emmy winner appeared in several hit films and shows including "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang," "The Comic," "Dick Tracy," "Night at the Museum, "The New Dick Van Dyke Show" and "Diagnosis: Murder." More recently, the 93 year old released a solo album and made a cameo in 2018's "Mary Poppins Returns." He shares four children — Christian, Barry, Stacy and Carrie Beth — with first wife Margie Willett. The couple divorced in 1984 and in 2012 — three years after the death of his longtime partner, Michelle Triola — Dick married Arlene Silver.
David Tomlinson starred as George Banks, Mary Poppins' employer and the father of Jane and Michael, in "Mary Poppins."
David Tomlinson had a successful career in Hollywood long after "Mary Poppins." The British actor appeared in "Bedknobs and Broomsticks," "The Love Bug," "The City Under the Sea," "The Liquidator," "The Water Babies" and "Dominique." His final movie role was in 1980's "The Fiendish Plot of Dr. Fu Manchu." Following the release of the film, David retired to spend more time with his family. He and his wife, Audrey Freeman, were parents to four sons, David Jr., William, Henry and James. In 2000, David died in his sleep after suffering a sudden stroke at the age of 83.
Karen Dotrice starred as Jane Banks, George Banks' daughter who is under the care of Mary Poppins, in "Mary Poppins."
Karen Dotrice continued to act during the 1960s and '70s, appearing in "The Gnome-Mobile," "A Picture of Katherine Mansfield Edna," "Napoleon and Love," "Upstairs, Downstairs," "Dickens of London," "Joseph Andrews" and "The Thirty Nine Steps." She retired from acting in 1984 after appearing in the 1981 pre-Broadway production of "Othello." Karen later told The Telegraph that she regretted her time as a child actor and gave up her career after she was asked, as a teenager, to appear topless onscreen. Today, she continues to make public appearances and provide commentary on various Disney projects. Karen shares one son, Garrick, with her ex-husband and two children, Isabella and Griffin, with her current husband, former Universal Studios executive Edwin "Ned" Nalle.
Matthew Garber starred as Michael Banks, George Banks' son who is under the care of Mary Poppins, in 1964's "Mary Poppins."
Matthew Garber appeared in two more films, "The Three Lives of Thomasina" and "The Gnome-Mobile" (alongside his "Mary Poppins" co-star Karen Dotice), before retiring in 1967. Sadly, 10 years later, Matthew contracted hepatitis while living in India. His father was able to get him home to London several months later but the disease had already affected his pancreas. Matthew died from pancreatitis in June 1977 at the age of 21. He is pictured here with Karen at the 1965 Ideal Home Exhibition in London.
Glynis Johns starred as Winifred Banks, a suffragette who is married to George Banks and is the mother of Jane and Michael, in 1964's "Mary Poppins."
Glynis Johns went on to have an accomplished Hollywood career before retiring from acting in 1999. The Welsh actress won a Tony Award after originating the role of Desiree Armfeldt in "A Little Night Music" on Broadway and starred in several movies including "Dear Brigitte," "Don't Just Stand There!" and "Lock Up Your Daughters." In the 1980s and '90s, Glynis appeared in "Cheers," "Coming of Age," "While You Were Sleeping" and her final film, "Superstar." Glynis – who turned 95 in 2018 — has been married four times and shared a son, the late actor Gareth Forwood, with her first husband, Anthony Forwood.
Hermione Baddeley played Ellen, the maid at the Banks residence, in "Mary Poppins."
After "Mary Poppins" debuted, Hermione Baddeley continued to perform as a celebrated character actress for decades. The British star appeared in "Bewitched," "Batman," "Little House on the Prairie," "Camp Runamuck" and "Maude," which earned her a Golden Globe for best supporting actress in 1975. Hermione starred in her final film, "The Last Leaf," in 1983. She died three years later, at the age 79, following a series of strokes. Hermione was survived by her two children, Pauline Tennant and David Jr., from her first marriage to David Tennant.
