On Sunday, it appeared as though Jay Cutler put his increasingly tense divorce on hold to publicly praise his ex, Kristin Cavallari, on Mother's Day. Fans, however, saw it as nothing more than a ruse by the former star of "The Hills."
In what was seemingly a civil gesture, the former NFL quarterback appeared to post a photo of Kristin with their three children to an Instagram account attributed to him.
"Happy Mother's day to all the moms," the accompanying message said. "These 3 little ones picked a good one."
Kristin even commented on the post with a heart emoji.
Fans, though, were far from convinced that Jay extended the olive branch and believe Kristin is actually the one behind the message. Why? Well, she's said that she actually runs Jay's Instagram account.
"I think there needs to be a little clarification on Jay's Instagram," she said in 2018. "It's not him running it. It's me. It's what Jay would have if he had Instagram."
On Sunday, fans were quick to comment, saying they aren't fooled.
"Kristin you should give Jay his Instagram back," one person said. Another added, "Kristin, get off his account."
One person called the post "gross."
"Kristin, babe, we know you run this account," another said.
On April 26, the "Very Cavallari" stars announced that they are splitting after 10 years together. They initially implied that the split was amicable, but things quickly got tense — she accused him of "inappropriate marital conduct" in her divorce filing, while he claimed to be the primary parent for their children.
Last week, she also accused him of refusing to release some of their money and blocking her from buying a new home. After a few days, the duo found some common ground and he agreed to give her the funds to buy the property. On May 4, the couple also reached a custody agreement in regards to their three kids: Until the "Hills" alum moves into the new house, the kids will remain at their current Nashville home. Jay and Kristin will switch off every other week to stay with the kids. Once she moves into a new home, they will split time with the children evenly.
Friends of the couple weren't shocked by the split, saying it has been a long time coming. A source told Page Six that Kristin had grown frustrated with Jay's post-retirement work ethic, indicating she felt he had become "unmotivated" and "lazy" after his NFL career came to an end.
"She was growing increasingly impatient with him. He was supposed to take this big job at Fox Sports and have a life after football that would get him up off the couch and do something," a source told the New York Post's gossip column. "Instead, he backed out — this is [three] years ago — and joined the [Miami] Dolphins. That didn't pan out well, and he was left with no TV gig until she got the show ['Very Cavallari'] for them."
Kristin, Page Six's source said, "views herself as very polished and put together, and [Jay as] this lazy, unmotivated guy."
