Kristin Cavallari and Jay Cutler have finally been able to start resolving some of the issues surrounding their contentious split — like compromising on a child custody plan for their three kids — following their late-April divorce filings. But as things move forward, new claims about what led to their breakup are emerging.
Following reports from multiple outlets alleging that the Uncommon James designer and the former NFL star had been having problems for a while — many of which had plagued them from the start of their relationship a decade ago — Page Six published a story on May 6 claiming that Kristin has been unhappy with Jay's post-retirement work ethic, and that her feelings factored into their split.
The "Very Cavallari" star didn't like that the onetime athlete — whom she married when he was playing for the Chicago Bears — had become "unmotivated" and "lazy" and preferred hanging out at home to pursuing new career ambitions, a source told Page Six.
"She was growing increasingly impatient with him. He was supposed to take this big job at Fox Sports and have a life after football that would get him up off the couch and do something," a source told the New York Post's gossip column. "Instead, he backed out — this is [three] years ago — and joined the [Miami] Dolphins. That didn't pan out well, and he was left with no TV gig until she got the show ['Very Cavallari'] for them."
When Jay and Kristin wed in 2013, he was in the midst of an eight-season run with the Bears, who released him in 2017. Jay then announced his retirement and signed on to become a commentator for Fox Sports. He then decided to return to the sport with a one-year, $10 million contract with the Dolphins that same year.
Kristin, a reality TV alum who rose to popularity on MTV's "Laguna Beach" and "The Hills" long before she inked "Very Cavallari" on E! for herself and Jay, "views herself as very polished and put together, and [Jay as] this lazy, unmotivated guy," the source told Page Six.
Page Six pointed out that, as seen on "Very Cavallari," Jay has in recent years received offers from CBS and ESPN and was considering trying to go the commentator route again, though clearly he hasn't pursued it.
Jay filed for divorce first, citing irreconcilable differences. Kristin's petition followed. She cited "inappropriate marital conduct" as another reason for the divorce and later claimed Jay was blocking her from accessing funds to purchase a new home. They've since resolved that issue and she's in the process of purchasing a new house in Tennessee.
