With Los Angeles back under a stay-at-home order following a record number of new COVID-19 cases in one day, Hollywood A-listers including Reese Witherspoon, Mark Ruffalo, Elizabeth Banks and Gal Gadot are making the most of their downtime with an LOL-worthy new Instagram trend that started with a meme repost by Garcelle Beauvais.
In a nutshell? Instead of placing an Elf somewhere on a Shelf in their homes to ward off their kids' bad behavior before Christmas, celebs are putting pics of other stars whose names rhyme with theirs on their virtual shoulders.
ET traces the silliness back to a meme of Pharrell sitting on Garcelle's shoulder, which she reposted on Tuesday, Dec. 1, captioning the pic, "You've heard of Elf on a Shelf, now get ready for this…"
Clearly inspired, Elizabeth Banks took the meme one step further on Friday, editing a photo of herself to incorporate a small Tom Hanks on her shoulder …because why not?
Cue Reese, who Insta-waved at Elizabeth and took the whole thing even further. "Oh hey @elizabethbanks!" she posted on Saturday. "I see your Hanks-on-Banks and I raise you a Grease-on-Reese."
From there, things started going a little bananas. Think: Tony Stark on his costar, Mark Ruffalo:
How 'bout a tiny Tony Hawk, aka "skate," on Kate Walsh?
… or perhaps you'd prefer a nice Pedro Pascal on Gal Gadot?
Not one to be dissuaded by his seemingly un-rhymable last name, even Kyle MacLachlan got in on the fun and shared a selfie complete with a mini-Harry Styles smiling from the shelf of his shoulder.
And just like that, we have a whole new world of lockdown entertainment options …!
