Fashion hits and misses from the 2019 Grammy Awards

The Grammys notoriously serve up the most outrageously entertaining red carpet looks of the year, and the 2019 Grammy Awards were no exception. Now that the prizes have been handed out, it's time for Wonderwall.com to review the fashion from music's biggest night. First up, this very rare event: Jennifer Lopez on the miss list. Not only did she make the miss list — she had one of our least favorite looks of the night. The fit! The cut! Though this bizarre sleeveless Ralph & Russo frock featured some beautiful jeweled embellishments, we've never seen J.Lo in an ensemble so poorly tailored. Next up, a better view of her ridiculous hat, plus more of the best and worst looks of the night…

The wide-brimmed hat was a bizarre selection. Why would you obscure half of Jennifer Lopez's gorgeous face? Maybe it was an attempt to distract us from the horrible tailoring? Nice try, but we still can't unsee that puckering along the back! One thing that went right? Her earring selection — those Niwaka jewels are stunning.

The second we saw Kacey Musgraves' pale blush gown, we noticed a nod to the cover of her album "Golden Hour" — that fan detail! The country star's cover features her holding a pink fan, and the neckline of her confection mimicked that shape with ethereal fanned-out tulle. Aside from loving that sweet allusion, we also adored the rest of the features of her Valentino Haute Couture gown… especially that berry-colored belt. When it came time for hair and makeup, Kacey Musgraves went with pretty pink shades that complemented her frock perfectly. We loved how she went sans jewelry — save for her dainty diamond nose stud — keeping the attention on her gown.

Cardi B is always a wildcard on the red carpet, but this vintage Mugler design might be her craziest look yet. Though we appreciate how this was pulled from the fashion house's archives (hailing from 1995!), it should have stayed there. When the most normal part of your ensemble is a sheer sequined nude bodysuit, you know you're wearing a fashion miss. That nude bodysuit was tucked into a black skirt that bloomed out of a clam shell. Yep, that's right. A clam shell. You've got to see it better to believe it…

This angle gives you a better look at the clam-shell details of this odd piece of couture from Mugler. And if that weren't enough, Cardi B's accessories were just as wild. There was the pearl belt, a pearl choker necklace and a pearl beehive on top of her head… because, get it? Pearls come from oysters! Though that doesn't give us an explanation for the unnecessary full-length pink gloves. Next up, we're taking a closer look at all these details…

Cardi B topped off her mess of a Mugler ensemble with more pearls in the form of this wacky beehive atop her head. We're surprised she didn't commit to all pearls: She also rocked 28 carats of diamonds by Gismondi 1754 on her ears to complete the look.

Lady Gaga brought disco glam to the Grammy Awards red carpet — and we loved her choice for this award season stop. The sparkly silver Celine selection featured a fanned-out frill along the bodice and a sky-high slit.

Though her look didn't need more sparkle, Lady Gaga donned diamonds by Tiffany & Co. on her ears and around her neck.

We know Kylie Jenner was on hand to support boyfriend Travis Scott, but we don't know why she picked this hideous getup. The bizarre pale pink Balmain jumpsuit featured a halter-style neckline, full-glove sleeves and a satin and lace belt. She finished things off with white Jimmy Choo pumps and jewelry by Lorraine Schwartz.

Shawn Mendes looked handsome in black and blue on the Grammys red carpet. We loved his royal blue tuxedo with satin lapels and the way he paired it with a stark black dress shirt. Completing this sharp look? Those killer pointed-toe boots.

Dua Lipa dazzled in a custom Atelier Versace design. The crystal mesh column gown featured delicately draped blue and gray silk satin that cascaded into a glamorous train for an elegant, eye-catching red carpet moment. Next up, a better look at her jewels, hair and makeup…

Dua Lipa topped her shimmering Versace confection with even more sparkle in the form of this gorgeous Bulgari necklace. To complement all the dazzling details, Dua kept her hair and makeup starkly simple. She wore her hair straight and opted for a smokey eye and nude lip.

Katy Perry looked like an actual cupcake in this bizarre Balmain confection. The gown started with a strapless silver bodice before giving way to a ridiculous silhouette covered in bubblegum pink tulle. Despite the disappointing dress selection, Katy's hair and makeup were on-point. See her beauty look next…

Gorgeous! Katy Perry donned pink eyeshadow and a pretty pink lip to complement her Balmain frock and kept her short hairstyle wavy. The icing on this cupcake-like look? Those stunning diamond earrings by Djula.

Rocking pink better than Katy Perry? Post Malone, who wore this star-studded blush leather combo that we're kind of coveting now. He finished things off with a white T-shirt, an equally blinged-out matching belt and pink boots.

Maybe Maren Morris was just trying to get into the Valentine's Day spirit? Her Galia Lahav gown was floral overkill — from the flowers on the pleated fabric to that excessive embroidered embellishment on the shoulder. We weren't fans of that harsh silver belt detail either.

Though her Galia Lahav gown let us down, we loved Maren Morris's unique Lorraine Schwartz statement earrings.

The pantsuit sans undershirt has been pretty overdone lately, but Miley Cyrus figured out a way to make it feel fresh on the Grammys red carpet. The superstar donned a black Mugler suit packed with personality in the form of an oversized jacket and fun flared pants. Next up, her equally stellar accessories…

Miley Cyrus added some dazzling diamonds to her Mugler pantsuit. She sported both the Rectangle Pave Drop Earrings with Trefoil in 18k white gold and the Pave Tribal Hoops in 18k white gold with gray diamonds by Loree Rodkin.

Alessia Cara's Grammys look was much too casual for our taste. The black dress with patterned sheer paneling along the short sleeves, the midriff and on the skirt was pretty, but it felt more like something we'd wear to get fancy on vacation than to a red carpet event.

Kelsea Ballerini went with a sweetly understated nude-hued Jenny Packham design for music's biggest night. But the view from afar didn't do this gown justice. Let's take a closer look…

Kelsea Ballerini's nude Jenny Packham gown was even more beautiful up close once you get a better view of its delicate crystal embellishments. We loved the way she finished this look with messy waves and brought a pop of color with her bright red lip.

We liked parts of Meghan Trainor's Christian Siriano jumpsuit, but not all of it. The top half, with its plunging neckline and long sleeves, started out fine — we just wish it hadn't ended in those insanely wide-legged pants. Not even the silver embellishments along the waist and sleeves could salvage that odd silhouette.

Camila Cabello donned this sparkly hot pink Armani number, bringing a fun pop of color to the Grammys red carpet. We loved the high-neck detail, the long sleeves and the way this look sparkled when the light hit it. Next up, a view of the back…

The back of Camila Cabello's dreamy pink Armani dress featured an unexpected huge oval cut-out. We liked the edge the cut-out brought to an otherwise very covered-up frock, but it was her earrings that elevated the look even further!

Camila Cabello's jewelry was almost as eye-catching as her gown. Those drop earrings were comprised of not one but two pretty pink gemstones!

Gentlemen, take note! An easy way to jazz up a simple black suit and make a splash on the red carpet? Take a cue from country crooner Kane Brown, who added a baroque patterned dress shirt to his otherwise classic menswear look from Versace for an edgy, on-point ensemble.

Bebe Rexha wanted a princess moment and she got it on the Grammys red carpet… but it unfortunately didn't translate to a best dressed moment. The star wore this incredibly extra red gown by Monsoori comprised of dozens of layers of tulle (okay, fine, we counted and it looks like eight). But it wasn't just the tulle that turned us off the look — it was the halter-style neckline and the strange bodice.

Though we didn't love her dress, we can't deny Bebe Rexha's jewelry choices were stellar. The singer wore gorgeous earrings and a drop diamond necklace from Electric Picks jewelry.

At any other award show, a pink feathered minidress might not fly on the red carpet, but the Grammy Awards, the red carpet has its own set of rules. That's why this flirty Ralph & Russo frock on Anna Kendrick was an easy hit to call. We loved the silver embellishments and the way she completed things with silver Stuart Weitzman heels. Anna Kendrick completed her pretty pink moment with a high ponytail and pretty rosy-hued makeup. She accessorized with these gorgeous Nikos Koulis earrings from the brand's Universe Line, which featured white gold and white diamonds in translucent enamel.

St. Vincent certainly made an impression on the Grammys red carpet in this busy Giambattista Valli Couture design… just not the right one. We weren't impressed with the odd silhouette of this getup, from the long bell sleeves to the romper-style frilled shorts in the front and the lengthy train in the back, though we did love those Giuseppe Zanotti heels.

Grammy host Alicia Keys rocked the prettiest shade of red on the carpet, donning this long-sleeved, floor-length Armani Prive gown with a plunging neckline and a fun button detail down the front. Equally as beautiful? Her jewelry! Let's check out her beauty look and those diamonds next…

We love Alicia Keys' continued commitment to rocking no makeup. The star still looked drop-dead gorgeous while barefaced, letting the Bulgari diamonds on her earlobes and edgy necklace take center stage.

Ashanti's gown started out promising, with its sleek black velvet high neck and long sleeves, but it quickly went south. The fancy fabric gave way to bizarre gold ruched fabric in the form of an insanely dramatic skirt.

Are they wings? Is she wearing a flower? Is she channeling a swan? We had a lot of questions for Heidi Klum when it came to her bizarre white Stephane Rolland minidress at the Grammy Awards, but mainly the question we wanted to ask was, "Why?"

Diplo looked quite debonair on the Grammys red carpet. He went with a sleek black tux, white dress shirt sans tie and a pair of loafers. Next up, a better look at his glasses!

We love Diplo's decision to rock his wide-rimmed glasses on the red carpet! They made his classic menswear ensemble look ever sharper.

Here's hoping this is the only half-skirt we see on the Grammys red carpet! Eve donned this unfortunate silhouette in black with a sleeveless top, plunging neckline and metallic belt detail all by Ashi Studio.

Yikes! Tayla Parx donned this ridiculously ruffled pink confection, but that wasn't even the biggest fashion offense. Nope, that went to the Converse sneakers she wore on the red carpet.

It was a lime green pantsuit for Tracee Ellis Ross. We liked the pop of color on the menswear-inspired getup by Ralph & Russo, and the fun bedazzled snake detail that wove over the jacket.

Janelle Monae always pushes the fashion envelope on the red carpet, but that doesn't always pay off. Though her sartorial selection featured unique and dynamic angles — those triangular shoulders! — between the funky feathered white frock and that over-the-top hat, we just can't get behind this Jean Paul Gaultier look. But before we say goodbye to this getup, we've got to get a better view of that hat…

Why couldn't Janelle Monae have worn this with a simpler dress? Alone, the hat is incredible and unlike anything we've ever seen. The fashion-forward piece was essentially a white square with a circular delicate gold detail that fit over top her head. She added more gold in the form of a funky Tiffany & Co. pairing, donning two different Tiffany HardWear earrings.

Mark Ronson kept things dapper in a white tuxedo jacket with black lapels and funky with a black dress shirt and white tie.

Nina Dobrev underwhelmed in this dull Dior gown. Unlike Kelsea Ballerini, who also wore a nude look, Nina didn't jazz this up with a bright lip. Instead, she went with equally dull makeup and an updo, making this an even more snooze-worthy ensemble. Fortunately, she was saved by the bling! Check out her Harry Winston jewels next…

Lee Ann Womack was so close to a hit with this dress! We loved the cut, those long sleeves and that glam bow at the waist, but we think it's the color choices that lost us. It would have worked better as an all-black frock with a pale pink bow, or even all-cream-colored, but the two-toned gown with that pink bow addition just didn't vibe well together.

Did Tori Kelly realize she was headed to the Grammy Awards? From the front view of her Paule Ka gown, we weren't so sure! She wore this painfully boring black column dress that didn't have any personality from the front. The back? Well, that was a different story!

It was all-black for Giuliana Rancic. We appreciate the new take on the sheer trend her Tom Ford dress delivered with its narrow stripe of sheer paneling starting at the neckline and running down the left side.

Who knew that coral and red could make such a great red carpet combo? Jameela Jamil proved it with this elegant gown, which featured spaghetti straps and draping on the bodice and a pleated skirt.

We were seriously underwhelmed by Rashida Jones's Grammy getup. The star wore this dull, drapey navy blue frock by Ralph Lauren on music's biggest night.

Where do we begin with this one? Musician Ben Harper arrived in an insanely embroidered suit jacket over a pale yellow dress shirt, khaki pants and, well, some horrendous blue and yellow Nike sneakers.

Joy Villa made a strong political statement at the Grammys in an interesting getup from Desi Designs Couture. From the front, the dress featured barbed wire on the shoulders and a spiky headpiece, but it was the back that explained the message of her fashion madness.

The back of Joy Villa's dress shed some light on the interesting composition of her bizarre dress: It read "Build the wall," clearly a statement in support of President Trump's policies. She also supported the president via her purse, which read "Make America Great Again." Surprisingly, Joy wasn't the only one who supported Trump with her fashion choice at the Grammys…

Rocker Ricky Rebel also arrived in pro-Trump gear endorsing the Republican president's 2020 run: His bright blue jacket read "Keep America Great" and "Trump 2020." He completed his look with a white shirt, pants and knee-high boots.
