Britney Spears' conservatorship back in the spotlight

Britney Spears legal drama unfolded all May long. On May 10, the pop star reportedly told a Los Angeles judge in a closed-court session that her father, Jamie Spears, had her committed to a mental health facility this spring against her will and forced her to take medication. Britney also reportedly made it clear that she wants more freedom and also would like for the conservatorship — which her father has overseen since her 2008 breakdown — to end. A judge ultimately denied her requests but ordered an independent evaluation of her situation, keeping Jamie in charge and in control. Then on May 22, Jamie told the court he was seeking to extend the conservatorship to Louisiana, Florida and Hawaii — all places California-based Britney likes to visit. Britney's longtime manager, Larry Rudolph, also this month shared that the singer has no plans to perform again "in the near future" and confirmed that her Las Vegas residency is off.

Doris Day, legendary singer and actress, dead at 97

Doris Day, one of the most iconic performers of the 1950s and 1960s — who was nominated for an Oscar for her work in "Pillow Talk" — died on May 13 after contracting pneumonia. She was 97.

Whitney Houston hologram tour and new album announced 7 years after death

Whitney Houston might soon be returning to the stage seven years after her untimely death. The singer's estate announced on May 20 that it is working with BASE Hologram on an upcoming tour, "An Evening With Whitney: The Whitney Houston Hologram Tour." The news comes just a few days after the estate shared that it will be working with Primary Wave Publishing on several new projects including a new album and a possible Broadway musical.

Three wills found at Aretha Franklin's Detroit home

Three handwritten wills, one from 2014 and two from 2010, were found at Aretha Franklin's Detroit home nearly nine months after her August 2018 death. The documents were filed in probate court in Oakland County, Michigan, on May 20. Aretha's longtime attorney David Bennett asked the court to rule on whether the wills are valid under Michigan law.

Rolling Stones reveal new June tour kickoff date after Mick Jagger surgery success

Mick Jagger is back on his feet! The legendary rocker, who underwent heart valve surgery in April, was seen energetically dancing and clearly feeling better than ever in a video posted to Instagram on May 15. Mick's speedy recovery means the Rolling Stones will be heading back on tour very soon: On May 16, the band announced that they'll now kick off their "No Filter" stadium tour in Chicago on June 21.

Billboard Music Awards highlights — including a wedding

When Drake took home 12 trophies — including top artist — at the 2019 Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas on May 1, he broke the record previously held by Taylor Swift for most career wins at the annual award show: The Canadian rapper now has 27 while the pop star has 23. Other big winners at the show included Cardi B, who took home six awards, and Maroon 5, who grabbed four. It was also a big night for the reformed Jonas Brothers, who delivered a well-received performance then headed to Vegas's A Little White Wedding Chapel where Joe Jonas married "Game of Thrones" actress Sophie Turner. Bandmate brothers Nick Jonas and Kevin Jonas served as groomsmen, Dan + Shay sang as the bride walked down the aisle and Diplo and Khalid attended as guests.

Kelly Clarkson has emergency appendectomy surgery hours after hosting Billboard Music Awards

Immediately after hosting — and performing at — the 2019 Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas on May 1, pop star and "The Voice" coach Kelly Clarkson flew to Los Angeles and underwent emergency surgery to remove her appendix. "Not gonna lie…. I may or may not have broken down in tears after the show from pain BUT thanks 2 all the amazing people @ Cedars-Sinai I flew home directly after the event, nailed the surgery early this morning, & feeling awesome now! Bye bye appendix," she tweeted on May 2. But just a few days later, the recovery was catching up with her. "Quick recap… recovering after surgery super duper sucks," she tweeted on May 5. "Turns out I don't 'rest' well (so bored), pain meds make me feel a different kind of horrible 2 where I question if I'd just rather feel the pain instead, & 2 out of the 3 scars feel as if Lord Voldemort is always near." But she still quickly returned to the set of "The Voice" for the final episodes of the season…

"The Voice" Season 16 winner announced, plus a coach is leaving

"The Voice" contestant Maelyn Jarmon, who was on John Legend's team, beat Blake Shelton's three country singers to win Season 16 of "The Voice" on May 21. Three days later, "The Voice" host Carson Daly revealed more huge news: Original coach Adam Levine is leaving — and fellow OG coach Blake Shelton's girlfriend, Gwen Stefani, is taking Adam's place. The Season 17 coach lineup will feature Blake, Gwen, John and Kelly Clarkson.

"American Idol" reveals a winner amid controversy

Laine Hardy was named the winner on the Season 17 finale of "American Idol" on May 19, pulling off a surprise upset over frontrunner Alejandro Aranda, who was a clear favorite with the judges. Laine's victory could be attributed to the fact that he performed covers of popular songs that resonated more with voters, while Alejandro performed four of his own original songs, which wowed the judges but ultimately failed to make a strong enough impact with "AI" fans.

Common opens up about molestation in new memoir

In his new memoir, "Let Love Have the Last Word," music star and actor Common revealed that he was molested as young boy. The rapper shared that a family friend sexually abused him when he was 9 or 10 years old during a family trip to Cleveland. "At some point I felt Brandon's hand on me," he writes. "I pushed him away. I don't remember saying a whole lot besides 'No, no, no.'" The repressed memory came back to Common while he was workshopping with friend and actress Laura Dern in 2017.

Maren Morris, Miranda Lambert, Zac Brown Band are top nominees for CMT Music Awards

CMT announced on May 7 that with three nods each, Maren Morris, Miranda Lambert and Zac Brown Band are the leading nominees for the 2019 CMT Music Awards. They are followed closely behind by Brandi Carlile, Carrie Underwood, Cole Swindell and Dan + Shay, who each have one nomination.

Man accused of killing Nipsey Hussle indicted

The man who is suspected of fatally shooting rapper Nipsey Hussle in March was indicted by a grand jury in Los Angeles on May 20. Eric R. Holder Jr., 29, was charged with one count of murder, two counts of attempted murder, assault with a firearm and possession of a firearm by a felon. He pleaded not guilty and is due back in court in June.

Selena Gomez slams social media

Selena Gomez is over social media. The former Disney star and singer spoke out against her generation's connection to social media while appearing at the Cannes Film Festival on May 15. "I think our world is going through a lot," she said. "I would say for my generation, specifically, social media has really been terrible. It does scare me when you see how exposed these young boys and young girls are. They are not aware of the news. I think it's dangerous for sure. I don't think people are getting the right information sometimes."

Quincy Jones pays tribute to late ex-wife Peggy Lipton

Quincy Jones honored his former wife, "Mod Squad" actress Peggy Lipton, on Twitter just a few days after her May 11 death from cancer at age 72. "There is absolutely no combination of words that can express the sadness I feel after losing my beloved Peggy Lipton," he wrote on May 14. "My wife of 14 years. We shared many, many beautiful memories, & most importantly, we share two incredible daughters… Pie (Kidada) and Doonkie (Rashida)."

Rihanna launches new LVMH luxury brand, Fenty

Luxury Rihanna clothing is coming to a store near you. The superstar singer announced on May 12 that in partnership with the historic LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton fashion house, she was producing a new brand, Fenty. "Designing a line like this with LVMH is an incredibly special moment for us," RiRi said in a statement. "Mr. [Bernard] Arnault has given me a unique opportunity to develop a fashion house in the luxury sector, with no artistic limits." The clothing and accessories collection launched at a Paris pop-up shop on May 24 and online on May 29.

DJ Spinderella claims that Salt-N-Pepa fired her over email

Spinderella and Salt-N-Pepa are no more. The legendary DJ wrote on Instagram that the hip-hop duo fired her from the group in a termination e-mail nearly five months ago. "I'm deeply saddened to share with all the #SaltnPepa and #Spinderella fans that I will not be performing on the #NKOTB Mixtape Tour," she shared on May 2. "Despite my participation in promoting the tour and being highly publicized as one of the acts, in January 2019 I received a 'termination' email from #SaltnPepa excluding me from performances with the group."

Woodstock 50 festival might be back on after court ruling

Woodstock 50, a music festival celebrating the 50th anniversary of the original 1969 concert extravaganza, might be back on: On May 20, it was revealed that New York's Supreme Court ruled that former investor Dentsu Aegis did not have the right to cancel the event. Judge Barry Ostrager also, however, ruled that the company that initially invested in the festival also did not have to return $17.8 million it withdrew from a shared Woodstock 50 bank account. Organizers have since secured a new investor.

R. Kelly to face multiple federal indictments: Report

R. Kelly might soon be waking up in a prison cell. A federal investigation into the singer's behavior is reportedly winding down, sources told The Blast on May 19. Testimony will allegedly be presented in front of grand juries in the Southern District of New York and the Northern District of Illinois within the next few weeks. The R&B star is expected to be charged with sex trafficking and tax evasion. He recently paid $62K in child support to his former wife to avoid jail time in an unrelated case.

Demi Lovato signs with famed manager Scooter Braun

Nine months after Demi Lovato nearly died from a drug overdose involving fentanyl-laced oxycodone, she's not only still sober as she continues her recovery, but is also now re-focused on her career. She took to Instagram on May 11 to announce that she's signed on with famed manager Scooter Braun, who's guided the careers of superstars Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande. "GUYS!!!!!!! Dreams came true today for me," Demi wrote in her post. "I officially have a NEW MANAGER!!! And not just any new manager but the one and only @scooterbraun!!!! Couldn't be happier, inspired and excited to begin this next chapter with you Scooter!!! Thank you for believing in me and for being a part of this new journey. Let's DO THIS!!!!!!"

Don McLean's loses lifetime achievement award over domestic violence guilty plea

UCLA's student alumni association rescinded Don McLean's lifetime achievement award on May 7 after learning that the singer entered a guilty plea on domestic violence charges in 2016. "SAA rejects any behavior — including violence and the threat of violence in all its forms — that does not uphold the True Bruin Values. We extend our support to survivors of domestic violence," Tod M. Tamberg, senior executive director of UCLA Strategic Communications Media Relations, said in a statement.
