Reese Witherspoon plays Madeline Mckenzie on "Big Little Lies." Madeline is a stay-at-home mom who volunteers at the local community theater. The mother of two shares one daughter with her current husband, Ed Mackenzie, and one teenage daughter with her ex-husband, Nathan Carlson, who is now re-married to Bonnie Wright. During Season 1, Madeline causes her fair share of drama after getting into a spat with Renata Klein over the bullying of her daughter. She's emotionally torn about her affair with Joseph Bachman, the theatre company director. It was her breakdown over the tryst that prompted the Monterey Five to meet in a secluded area during the school's fundraiser — where Perry is ultimately pushed to his death by Bonnie.
Reese Witherspoon is not only one of the big stars on "Big Little Lies" — she's also an executive producer on the show. The A-list actress, who has appeared in huge films like "Legally Blonde," "Cruel Intentions" and "Walk the Line," took up producing in 2014. Since then, she's produced "Gone Girl," "Wild" (which earned her an Oscar nomination) and "BLL," which won her two Emmys. Next up, Reese is set to produce and star in the Apple TV+ series "The Morning Show" and the Hulu series "Little Fires Everywhere." She shares two children, Ava and Deacon, with her ex-husband and "Cruel Intentions" co-star Ryan Phillippe. Reese married talent agent Jim Toth in 2011 and the couple welcomed their only child together, son Tennessee, in 2012.
Meryl Streep is a newcomer to "Big Little Lies." She joins the Season 2 cast as Mary Louise Wright, Perry's very skeptical mother. Mary believes that there is more to Perry's murder than what Celeste and the other women are telling her. (Meryl is pictured here on the set of the show in July 2018.)
Meryl Streep is a living legend. The celebrated actress is the most nominated person in Oscars history with 21 noms (she's won three times). Meryl has also received 31 Golden Globe nominations (winning eight), three Emmy Awards, 15 British Academy Film Award nominations and 17 Screen Actors Guild Award nods, winning two of each. Some of her most impressive acting credits include "Kramer vs. Kramer," "Sophie's Choice," "The Iron Lady," "The Devil Wears Prada," "Doubt," "Julie & Julia" and "The Post." Meryl is showing no signs of slowing down with two films, "The Laundromat" and "Little Women," scheduled for release in 2019. In addition to being a phenomenal actress, Meryl has also achieved major success in her personal life. She's been married to sculptor Don Gummer since 1978. The couple share four children: Henry Wolfe Gummer, Mamie Gummer, Grace Gummer and Louisa Gummer.
Shailene Woodley plays Jane Chapman on "Big Little Lies." Jane is a young single mom who decides to move to Monterey for a fresh start. She soon befriends Madeline and the pair become closer than ever when Jane's son, Ziggy, is falsely accused of bullying Renata's daughter, Amabella. During one particular bonding session, Jane reveals to Madeline that Ziggy was fathered by rape. Her world is turned upside down when she finds out at the school fundraiser that Celeste's husband, Perry, is the man who raped her.
Shailene Woodley has transitioned from a teen actress to a full-fledged Hollywood starlet. Shailene, who get her start on ABC Family's "The Secret Life of the American Teenager," has starred in several hit movies such as "The Descendants," "The Fault in Our Stars" and the "Divergent" series. She currently has two movies in the works, "Arkie" and an untitled Drake Doremus picture. Shailene has been dating Australian-Fijian rugby player Ben Volavola since 2018.
Zoe Kravitz stars as Bonnie Wright on "Big Little Lies." Bonnie is a free-spirited yoga teacher who's married to Madeline's ex-husband, Nathan. She and Madeline clash over parenting styles when it comes to Madeline's oldest daughter, Abigail Carlson, but Bonnie does her best to be non-confrontational throughout most of Season 1. That all comes to an end when she pushes Perry to his death at the school fundraiser. In the books, Bonnie grew up in an abusive household, which may have triggered her to push Perry after his attack at the school. According to Zoe, Season 2 will reveal a lot of Bonnie's background and motives, so we should have more answers soon!
Zoe Kravitz has fully emerged from her famous parents' shadows (her dad is music star Lenny Kravitz; mom is actress Lisa Bonet). Zoe first came to fame when she landed a role in 2007's "No Reservations." She's since appeared in "X-Men: First Class," the "Divergent" series, "Mad Max: Fury Road," "Dope" and the "Fantastic Beasts" series. Next up, she'll star in the musical "Viena and the Fantomes." Zoe surprised fans in November 2018 when she revealed that her longtime boyfriend, Karl Glusman, had proposed to her months earlier. The couple secretly tied the knot in May 2019.
Laura Dern plays Renata Klein on "Big Little Lies." Renata is a high-powered career woman who often clashes with the other moms of Monterey. She causes quite a stir in the community when her daughter, Amabella, begins to get bullied at school. She initially blames Jane's son, Ziggy, for the bullying after Amabella accuses him. However, by the end of Season 1, the truth is revealed — it was one of Celeste's sons, Max, who was bullying Amabella all along. Renata tries to apologize to Jane during the school fundraiser — just moments before Perry's untimely death.
Laura Dern has built quite an impressive career in Hollywood. The two-time Academy Award nominee has starred in several acclaimed films including "Rambling Rose," "Jurassic Park," "I Am Sam," "Star Wars: The Last Jedi," "Wild" and "Recount." She'll soon join her "Big Little Lies" co-star Meryl Streep in an adaptation of "Little Women." Laura divorced musician Ben Harper, with whom she shares two children, in 2013. Since then, she's been linked to former NBA player Baron Davis.
Alexander Skarsgard plays Perry Wright, Celeste's abusive husband, on "Big Little Lies." During Season 1, Perry is rich, successful and seemingly the perfect family man. However, it's later revealed that Perry physically and emotionally abuses his wife, Celeste, behavior that is soon imitated by his son, Max. Although he goes to couples therapy, Perry cannot control his violent urges. He begins to attack the Monterey Five during the school's fundraiser, leading Bonnie to push him down a flight of stairs. Neither Alexander nor the series' showrunners have confirmed if Perry will be back for Season 2, but the actor did hint at a possible return at the "BLL" New York premiere. "So I've heard. Yeah… I don't know, we'll see," he told Variety when asked about possible flashback scenes.
Alexander Skarsgard has held a special place in many fans' hearts since he charmed us on HBO's "True Blood" in 2007. He always puts her first but grows frustrated when he begins to feel that the effort isn't mutual. Overcome with guilt, Madeline tells Ed that she made a "terrible mistake," alluding to her affair. We can't wait to see how this all plays out in Season 2!
