Dead at 82

So long, Bandit! On Sept. 6, Burt Reynolds passed away after suffering a heart attack. He was 82. According to multiple reports, the actor was transported to a Florida hospital after going into cardiac arrest at home. It was there that he died. Hollywood mourned the legend. "There are times in your life that are so indelible, they never fade away. They stay alive, even forty years later. My years with Burt never leave my mind. He will be in my history and my heart, for as long as I live. Rest, Buddy," his "Smokey and the Bandit" co-star Sally Field tweeted. Arnold Schwarzenegger tweeted, "Burt Reynolds was one of my heroes. He was a trailblazer. He showed the way to transition from being an athlete to being the highest paid actor, and he always inspired me. He also had a great sense of humor – check out his Tonight Show clips. My thoughts are with his family."

Married?

Are Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin husband and wife or still just betrothed? That seems to be the question of the month. On Sept. 14, the typically reputable People magazine reported that the duo married during a civil ceremony at a courthouse in New York City. However, after that, TMZ said that the couple wasn't married but got a marriage license during the courthouse visit. The model also denied the reports. "I understand where the speculation is coming from, but I'm not married yet!" Hailey tweeted on Sept. 14, though later took it down. Then on Sept. 17, Hailey's uncle Alec Baldwin told "Access Hollywood" the young couple had tied the knot. "They just went off and got married," he said, adding that he'd only met Justin once but texts Hailey "every now and then." So judge for yourself.

Romance and rehab

When Ben Affleck checked into rehab in August, he was in the very early stages of a relationship with Playboy model Shauna Sexton, 22. The romance has continued since he's been in treatment, and that's worrying Ben's friends. The relationship has "been challenging for everyone who is trying to help him through this process," a source told "Entertainment Tonight." "He has been told to hold off on a relationship… but isn't heeding that advice. His closest friends hoped he was just dating her and would break it off after going to rehab, but he seems to get closer to her every day. The more time Ben seems to spend with Shauna, the more he seems to want to go home." It turns out that he actually has been going home daily. On Sept. 5, photos showed Ben at his house, but apparently the home visits are approved by his treatment center. "Ben is working out at his house," a source told People magazine on Sept. 5, adding that he's been going every day to work out with his trainers for a few hours a day and that he's accompanied by a sober coach and therapist. Ben's home workouts are "now part of his rehab regime," TMZ reported. Shauna has been there for his field trips home too. A source told "ET," "He had stayed in touch with Shauna the entire time he was in rehab and the people at the facility and friends had huge concerns about it because she isn't sober. She is a huge, red flag to everyone that is trying to support Ben with his process. Shauna is giving him false confidence and that is their biggest concern."

Job-shamed then praised

"The Cosby Show" actor Geoffrey Owens was trending for several days in early September after a photograph emerged of him working at a Trader Joe's in New Jersey. Initially, Geoffrey was job-shamed, but he was soon showered with support. On Sept. 4, Geoffrey appeared on "Good Morning America" wearing his Trader Joe's name badge. While speaking to Robin Roberts, he said he was "devastated" when the pic first emerged but explained how that feeling subsided soon after seeing the outpouring of support. "There is no job that's better than another. It may pay better, it may have better benefits, it may look better on paper. But it's not better. Every job is worthwhile," he said. "No one should feel sorry for me either from a positive or negative perspective because I've had a great life and a great career. I'm doing fine." The attention led to new acting job offers. "#GeoffreyOwens I'm about to start shootings OWN's number one drama next week! Come join us!!!" Tyler Perry tweeted. "I have so much respect for people who hustle between gigs. The measure of a true artist." (Geoffrey agreed to take part in Tyler's project as well as do a guest-starring role on "NCIS: New Orleans.) In the wake of the story, other actors publicly shared the "regular jobs" they've done too.

Buddhist baby blessing

In early August, it was reported that Richard Gere, 69, and new bride Alejandra Silva, 35, were expecting their first child together. On Sept. 16, the Spanish businesswoman and activist confirmed the happy news by sharing a photo of the Dalai Lama touching her belly. "A very special moment just a few minutes ago… Getting blessings for our precious to come," Alejandra captioned the Instagram photo (like Richard, she is a Buddhist). "We couldn't announce it before telling HH Dalai Lama." According to Alejandra's post, the blessing took place in Rotterdam, Netherlands. She has since taken it down.

R.I.P.

Rapper Mac Miller was found dead on Sept. 7 in his Studio City, California, home. Initial reports pointed to a drug overdose. He was 26. Despite Mac's struggles with sobriety, the music world was shocked to learn of his death. His famous ex, Ariana Grande, posted a photo of Mac on Instagram after the news hit. A week later on Sept. 14, she broke her silence while sharing a fun video of Mac telling a story, which was taken while they were dating. "I adored you from the day I met you when I was 19 and I always will. I can't believe you aren't here anymore," she said. "I really can't wrap my head around it. We talked about this. So many times. I'm so mad, I'm so sad I don't know what to do. You were my dearest friend. For so long. Above anything else. I'm so sorry I couldn't fix or take your pain away. I really wanted to. The kindest, sweetest soul with demons he never deserved. I hope you're okay now. Rest." Some trolls blamed Ariana for his issues — they split last spring — but Mac's good friend Shane Powers publicly defended the pop star, saying she was "incredible" and "supportive" to the rapper as he worked and, ultimately, failed to stay sober.

Never legally married?

Earlier this year, Geena Davis' husband Reza Jarrahy filed for divorce after 17 years of marriage, but in September, it emerged that perhaps they were never married in the first place. On Sept. 5, the actress asked a judge to dismiss her craniofacial surgeon ex's divorce petition, claiming the two were never legally wed. In her court filing, the actress said their marriage license was never properly filed in New York back in 2001. She said they both knew that their marriage was not legally binding and knew it during the wedding ceremony. If that's true, it would mean that the duo doesn't have to split property — she's entitled to what's hers and he's entitled to what's his. Also, if they were never actually legally married, the doctor would not be entitled to spousal support because he was never a spouse. Geena says they both even filed tax returns either as "single" or "head of household." Reza insists the marriage was valid. A judge has yet to rule.

Pregnant!

Jessica Simpson is pregnant with her third child. The fashionista announced the news on Instagram on Sept. 18, sharing a photo of her two kids with husband Eric Johnson holding big black balloons. "SURPRISE…," she captioned the snap. She followed that up with an image of small pink balloon floating through the air, indicating that it's a girl. "This little baby girl will make us a family of five," she wrote. "We couldn't be happier to announce this precious blessing of life."

Whirlwind wedding

Denise Richards is a married lady — and the wedding came just a couple days after it was reported that she got engaged to boyfriend Aaron Phypers and just a few weeks after his divorce from Nicollette Sheridan was finalized. "[Aaron] really wanted to marry on Sept. 8 because eight means infinity. We called [wedding planner] Mindy Weiss and she did it [in] less than 48 hours and it was beautiful," Denise told People magazine. The whirlwind wedding, which took place in Malibu, will be featured on the next season of "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills," on which Denise will appear.

Third cancer diagnosis

Olivia Newton-John announced on Sept. 9 that she has actually been diagnosed with cancer three times in the last three decades. The "Grease" alum, who received her first breast cancer diagnosis in 1992 and in 2017 revealed the disease had returned, this time in her lower spine, told Australian news program "Sunday Night" that doctors also diagnosed a recurrence in her shoulder in 2013, but she didn't want to publicly reveal the news at the time. She said she's "doing really well" as she continues to fight the disease using a combination of traditional treatments like radiation and more natural therapies such as cannabis oil for pain. "I believe I will win over it," she said.

Nasty fight!

Nicki Minaj and Cardi B have some serious beef with each other. On Sept. 7, Cardi sparked a shoe-throwing altercation at the Harper's Bazaar Icons party during New York Fashion Week. A few days after the fight — which left Nicki unharmed, as she was blocked by her security team, and Cardi with a large knot on her head — Cardi had no regrets. TMZ reported on Sept. 11 that Cardi felt "zero remorse" about going after Nicki in public. Nicki called the incident "so mortifying and so humiliating" while talking about what happened on her Sept. 10 Apple Music "Queen Radio" show. Why did the fight go down in the first place? Cardi believed that Nicki had been trash-talking her baby and her abilities as a mother. "I just want to let the world know that Onika Tanya Maraj would never — has never and will never — speak ill of anyone's child. I am not a clown," Nicki said, adding that Cardi needs an "intervention." A source close to Cardi told TMZ that Nicki "has some nerve saying SHE needs an intervention when Nicki is the one who incites people almost for sport."

Baby on board

Benedict Cumberbatch and his theater director wife, Sophie Hunter, are expecting their third child together. E! News reported that Sophie sported "a small but growing baby bump" on the red carpet at the Emmy Awards on Sept. 17. The couple, who have not publicly confirmed the pregnancy, have been married for three and a half years and are already parents to toddler sons Kit, 3, and Hal, 1.

Out!

Julie Chen's time on "The Talk" is over. Her departure came the week after her husband, Les Moonves, resigned as the CEO of CBS in the wake of a dozen sexual misconduct allegations, which he's denied. Julie — who says she wants to spend more time at home with her husband and young son right now — announced the news in a pre-recorded message that aired on Sept. 18. "I love you all," she told her fellow co-hosts, "and I know this show and the sisterhood it stands for will live on for many, many, many more years to come. You ladies got this, and I cannot be more proud to call you my friends." The departure was no real surprise. A source told Page Six on Sept. 17, "She is definitely leaving 'The Talk' and will 100 percent stay with Les…" The current season of "Big Brother," which Julie also hosts, ends Sept. 26. No word on whether she'll return to that show, but a report from TMZ indicated she wants to remain as its host.

DC departures

We've apparently seen the last of Henry Cavill as Superman and the last of Ben Affleck as Batman. On Sept. 12, The Hollywood Reporter claimed that Henry is parting ways with Warner Bros. after playing the Man of Steel in three films. Henry and Warner apparently couldn't come to terms, and Ben "isn't expected to reprise his role" as the Dark Knight either, the report stated. After the report was published, Warner commented on Henry's potential departure, saying, "We have a great relationship and great respect for Henry Cavill that continues to remain unchanged. Additionally we have made no current decisions regarding any upcoming Superman films." A source told THR that Warner is trying to hit a "reset" button with the DC Universe. Jon Hamm has publicly said he'd be game to play Batman, and a rumor has been floating around that some execs think Michael B. Jordan could make a good Superman.
