2018 BAFTA Awards: Fashion hits and misses

The stars aligned in London for the 71st EE British Academy Film Awards — the British version of the Oscars — on Feb. 18, 2018. As they did for the 2018 Golden Globes, stars donned all-black looks in support of the Me Too and Time's Up movements. But just because they kept things simple doesn't mean everyone hit a fashion home run. Wonderwall.com is taking a look back at the best and worst celeb style moments of the 2018 BAFTAs, starting with Jennifer Lawrence, who donned one of the strangest looks of the evening. Adding to the restrictive look of Jennifer Lawrence's structured black gown was the translucent white fabric that wrapped around her back from the edges of the jutting bodice. It's not a cape. It's not sleeves. It's just odd. Unfortunately, her styling did little to help the matter…

We hope Jennifer Lawrence didn't pay someone to style her hair in this super-basic, stick-straight 'do. We love her ruby-red lips, but they weren't enough to save this look, especially considering how distractingly mismatched her boho Sylva & Cie Jadite Ivy Earrings look with the rest of her getup.

Duchess Kate was the only bold-faced name who declined to wear black during the BAFTAs! Prince William's missus avoided making a political statement — we're sure the palace has a strict policy when it comes to matters such as these — by wearing a deep-green Jenny Packham gown with draped shoulders, a plunging neckline and a strip of black velvet tied above her baby bump to perfectly accentuate her pregnancy curves. Though we wish she'd worn black (especially considering her accessory selection), we can't deny that this gown looks incredible on Duchess Kate from any angle. Now see what we mean about her bling…

Duchess Kate's jaw-dropping emerald-and-diamond jewels really would've popped if she'd worn black, right? Unfortunately, they clash with the deep olive-green shade of her gown.

Saoirse Ronan donned one of the most divisive looks of the evening, and call us crazy, but we were living for it. Her black Chanel gown featured a long-sleeved bodice with a high neckline and two contrasting fabric types (one reflective) and a feathered miniskirt over a floor-length sheer skirt. She wisely completed her look with sky-high ankle-strap Jimmy Choo pumps to elongate her legs. Now let's see her other accessories…

Saoirse Ronan rocked a fresh-faced makeup look that we adored and kept the focus on her stunning Cartier drop earrings, which ended in massive green stones.

Margot Robbie disappointed in a sleeveless black Givenchy gown with a high neckline, an embellished skirt and an asymmetrical bodice. A lacy black overlay covered the entire dress, giving it a shapeless, unfinished appearance. We also couldn't help but think that something had gone horribly wrong with this look based on the way the Oscar nominee was posing, with her left shoulder slightly cocked and her left arm glued to her side. (She's posed in the exact same uncomfortable-looking position in every shot from the red carpet.)

Lupita Nyong'o looked regal in a black velvet Elie Saab Couture gown with metallic trim and tulle panels in the skirt. We especially loved the bodice, which featured a keyhole cutout and a high neckline with extra shoulder straps. Let's get a closer look at her accessories…

Lupita Nyong'o accessorized with pearl drop Sanjay Kasliwal earrings featuring several darker stones, a multi-strand black headband and a Time's Up lapel pin — our favorite accessory of the evening!

Angelina Jolie looked elegant in a black velvet Ralph & Russo Couture gown with one draped shoulder strap. She completed her look with a matching extra-long stole and massive diamond earrings. It was certainly one of the most timeless looks of the evening!

The usually impeccably dressed Allison Janney served up one of the biggest fashion misses of the evening in a Bibhu Mohapatra column dress that attempted to incorporate some of the biggest fashion trends of the season (statement sleeves, structured shoulders and a high neckline) but failed tremendously. Instead of looking fashion-forward, she came off looking just plain weird. Bummer.

The 24-year-old breakout star of "Black Panther," Letitia Wright, signaled her arrival in a gorgeous black velvet column Gucci dress with a chunky belt featuring a rectangular jeweled buckle. Let's take a closer look at the detail that had everyone buzzing…

Letitia Wright's gown featured bejeweled bugs at irregular intervals, as well as jeweled shoulder straps.

Salma Hayek added pops of color to her look with beaded flowers at the waist, shoulders and cuffs of her gorgeous long-sleeved Gucci gown, which also featured pink sequined trim on the bodice. Flawless!

Helena Bonham Carter donned what was probably her best look in years — a simple satiny off-the-shoulder midi-length Vivienne Westwood dress — during the BAFTAs. (This is considered a fashion home-run as far as the eccentric actress is concerned.) She topped off her look with a messy updo — because, of course — and carried a unique Dolce & Gabbana handbag. Helena Bonham Carter's Dolce & Gabbana purse, which was designed to look like handwriting on notebook paper, read, "All I need is love and Wi-Fi," on one side and "Queen" on the other. (Truth!)

Emma Roberts rocked a totally on-trend Schiaparelli Couture dress with structured shoulders and a thigh-high slit. She accessorized with gold chain-link earrings rather than a necklace to keep the attention up where it needed to be — smart move!

Greta Gerwig's trademark vintage-inspired sense of style was on full display in a sleeveless black Jonathan Cohen gown featuring beaded flowers that was just SO her. Too bad her styling was so divisive…

We love, love, LOVE Greta Gerwig's retro makeup look, which was minimalistic aside from her fierce winged eyeliner. Her tousled 'do, on the other hand, left a lot to be desired. If only it had been just a little less ratted on top!

Hot mama! Rebecca Ferguson, who is pregnant with her second child, had a major maternity-wear moment in a Stella McCartney gown with a thigh-high slit and a cape with white lining.

Sally Hawkins' loose-fitting, long-sleeved Ralph & Russo gown swallowed her whole. Just because she starred in "The Shape of Water" doesn't mean that the petite actress should be swimming on the red carpet!

Naomie Harris spiced up the red carpet in a sheer Zuhair Murad confection: a sheer dress with a plunging neckline and an open front featuring intricate beadwork and feathered sleeves, which she wore with tailored trousers for one of the most delightfully unexpected looks of the evening.

Anya Taylor-Joy failed to impress in a sheer Dolce & Gabbana dress that awkwardly accentuated her full-coverage briefs. Let's take a closer look at her overly done styling…

Anya Taylor-Joy rocked layered silver necklaces, a gold jeweled crown, bold red lips and thick winged eyeliner. Any one of these elements would've been enough, but all together, they're just way too much.

Gugu Mbatha-Raw stunned in a vintage Cardinali gown featuring a high neckline with a swath of sequins across the bodice and covering its short sleeves.

Ruth Wilson donned an unfortunate Dior suit comprised of loose-fitting trousers and an extremely bulky jacket over a blouse with a high neckline. To make matters worse, her beaded ankle-strap heels looked like they belonged on an entirely different outfit.

Kristin Scott Thomas impressed in an elegant Christian Dior Couture gown with white trim. She accessorized with a Time's Up lapel pin and massive diamond earrings.

Caitriona Balfe gave us trash-bag vibes in a shapeless black gown by The Row (total Olsen Twins hobo-chic, right?) that she wore off one shoulder in a half-hearted attempt to spice things up. Unfortunately, it didn't do the trick.

Leslie Bibb brought pops of color to the red carpet in a strapless Yanina Couture column dress with a velvet bodice and a tiered skirt featuring light blue beadwork. Lovely!

Natalie Dormer was going for Old Hollywood but gave us "Dynasty" in a black Alberta Ferretti column dress with a sheer cape and matching stole that cascaded down her back.

Andrea Riseborough donned one of our least favorite looks of the evening: an Elie Saab Haute Couture gown featuring a satiny skirt with a thigh-high slit and a sheer, long-sleeved bodice with irregular beadwork.
