On Dec. 25, 2018, the thriller "Destroyer" starring Nicole Kidman debuts in theaters. The movie focuses on Nicole's character Erin Bell, a L.A.P.D. cop who went undercover to work with a gang and is still dealing with the aftermath 20 years later. While we're excited to check out the film, we can't get over how Nicole changed her appearance for the role. The famous face completely transforms in order to play the traumatized police officer. In honor of Nicole's complete makeunder, Wonderwall.com is taking a look at all the celebs who went from hot to not for a movie role. Keep reading for more…
Nicole Kidman may have outdone herself with this transformation. Her work in "Destroyer" has already nabbed her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama. Offscreen, she's known for topping best dressed lists and being a true Hollywood beauty.

In 2013's "Dallas Buyers Club," Academy Award-winning actor Matthew McConaughey played Ron Woodroof, an AIDS patient who works the system to help himself and others get life-extending medications. For the role, Matthew lost a jaw-dropping 38 pounds, turning his naturally muscular frame lean and lanky. He also grew a mustache that, along with his hair, was dyed darker for the role.

Matthew McConaughey had another major makeunder for the 2016 dramatic thriller "Gold" in which he played Kenny Wells, a gold prospector with plans to exploit Indonesia's mineral resources. For the movie, Matthew reportedly gained 47 pounds and donned a very unflattering balding hair look as well as yellow prosthetic teeth. We hardly recognize the usually sexy star!
Thankfully, Matthew McConaughey is still a hunk in real life. In 2018, he's returning to the big screen in three new films, two of which required him to change his appearance again — "White Boy Rick" and "The Beach Bum" — though the third, "Serenity," has Matthew looking like his handsome self.
2018's "7 Days in Entebbe" saw Daniel Brühl and Rosamund Pike starring in the true story of a 1976 airplane hijacking and the bold rescue mission that followed. In the film, the typically glamorous Rosamund takes on a mousy appearance in the film — think minimal makeup and darker hair — to play Brigitte Kuhlmann, one of the terrorists who takes the plane hostage.
In real life, English actress Rosamund Pike — perhaps best known for her role in the 2014 film "Gone Girl" — is a vivacious blonde beauty. Along with starring in "7 Days in Entebbe" in 2018, Rosamund also starred in the dramatic thriller "Beirut" alongside Jon Hamm.
One of the most famous big-screen makeunders was Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron's transformation into Aileen Wuornos in "Monster." The 2003 biopic required the South African beauty to gain 30 pounds and wear prosthetic facial pieces so she would look more like Aileen, a notorious serial killer who was executed in 2002.
On- and off-screen, Charlize Theron is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful actresses in Hollywood (obviously). In 2018, she starred in two more films — "Gringo" and "Tully" — the latter of which required her to gain weight once more in order to play a burnt-out mother of three.
Oscar-winning British actor Christian Bale was barely recognizable as Irving Rosenfeld in the 2013 crime drama "American Hustle." For the role, Christian said he ate doughnuts, cheeseburgers and more to gain 43 pounds. He also rocked a spot-on mid-1970s style.
Christian Bale (seen here with wife Sibi Blazic in 2017) has already undergone another physical transformation in preparation for his role in the Dec. 21, 2018, biopic about former Vice President Dick Cheney's life, "Backseat." For the part, Christian once again packed on the pounds — he quipped that he'd been "eating a lot of pies" — to get to the size he wanted.
If you're having trouble placing the face, we don't blame you. Singer Mariah Carey underwent a major makeunder for her role as Ms. Weiss in the 2009 film "Precious." The usually glamorous diva checked her flawless makeup at the door and donned a darker hairstyle to play the part of a social worker determined to help Precious escape her traumatic upbringing.
Of course in real life, Mariah Carey always looks like a 10. The oft-engaged singer and mother of twins is currently focusing more on her music than her acting career.
Mariah Carey wasn't the only actress on "Precious" who underwent a makeunder. Mo'Nique, who played Precious' abusive mom, Mary, also had to transform her appearance for the film. Since Mary was a drug addict living in poverty, Mo'Nique had to forego fancy clothing and pretty makeup to truly embody the character.
Mo'Nique was looking lovelier than ever when she headed to a taping of "The View" on Feb. 22, 2018. The actress and comedian hasn't been seen much since "Precious," she claims, because the film's producers punished her for refusing to promote the movie abroad.
For the biopic thriller "Chapter 27," Jared Leto transformed his appearance to play John Lennon's murderer, Mark David Chapman. The actor chopped his long hair, donned glasses and reportedly gained 67 pounds by eating microwaved pints of ice cream mixed with olive oil and soy sauce (blech!). Talk about commitment. The goal was for Jared to appear bloated and deranged, like his character. The weight gain came at a cost, though, as he developed a painful case of gout.
Jared Leto has been a heartthrob since his first major role on "My So-Called Life." The actor and lead singer of the band Thirty Seconds to Mars has been rocking a full beard in 2018 but might be shaving it off soon as he's rumored to be reprising his role as The Joker for upcoming films including "Suicide Squad 2."
In the 2011 mystery drama "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," Rooney Mara starred as Lisbeth Salander, a hacker with some serious goth style. For the role, Rooney bleached her eyebrows and wore piercings and severe hairstyles to give her the look of someone who was both rebellious and removed from society.
Rooney Mara is a natural beauty who's not afraid to play with her style, much like her character Lisbeth. In fact, Rooney is known for rocking blunt bangs or, as in this picture, wearing her hair severely slicked-back. In 2018 Rooney starred in two films, "Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot" and "Mary Magdalene," both of which co-starred her boyfriend, Joaquin Phoenix.
For the 1999 biographical drama "Boys Don't Cry," Hilary Swank (seen here with Chloe Sevigny) underwent a drastic makeunder to play Brandon Teena, a trans man who, in 1993, was raped and killed in his home state of Nebraska (where Hilary is also from). To fully embody her character, the actress chopped her hair and went without makeup. She later won her first Oscar for the performance.
Hilary Swank, seen here at New York Fashion Week in 2018, isn't shy about looking glamorous. The "Million Dollar Baby" star debuted a new TV series in March 2018 co-starring Brendan Fraser and Donald Sutherland, "Trust."
The lovely Jennifer Aniston wasn't afraid to be seen in an entirely new light when she played pain-pill addict Claire Bennett in the emotional 2014 indie drama "Cake." For the role, Jennifer gained a few extra pounds by not working out for two months and went without makeup. Jennifer's famous hair even took on a more lackluster appearance in the film.
Of course in real life, Jennifer Aniston gives us all beauty goals. The fit actress has long worn hairstyles we covet and has a love for slim-fit styles that show off her enviable curves. Jennifer's most recent flick, Netflix's "Dumplin'," had her looking more like her offscreen self, as she played a former beauty queen mom to a plus-size teen.
In the 2013 sci-fi fantasy "Snowpiercer," Tilda Swinton (seen here with co-star Chris Evans) had a major makeunder to become the sinister and selfish Minister Mason. For the role, Tilda donned a blunt-cut brown wig, a prosthetic nose, fake damaged, yellow teeth and giant spectacles, which turned her into a mousy, unattractive and frighteningly dark character.
British actress Tilda Swinton is actually a fashion icon who's modeled for major brands like Chanel and Nars. Her beauty and androgynous approach to style allows Tilda to truly transform on-camera into anyone she wants to become. In 2018 Tilda starred in "Suspiria" alongside Dakota Fanning and voiced The Oracle in "The Isle of Dogs."
In the 2013 drama "Gimme Shelter," Vanessa Hudgens shed her pretty-girl persona to play deeply troubled, homeless and pregnant teen Apple. For the role, Vanessa gained 15 pounds, cut her long hair short and went without makeup throughout most of the film. She even stayed in a homeless shelter for women to pick up mannerisms she later used in the movie.
In real life, former "High School Musical" star Vanessa Hudgens loves elegant fashion and isn't afraid to embrace her natural beauty. In 2018, she has starred in two flicks — "Dog Days" and "Second Act."
