Of all the movies inspired by books, none has us more excited than director Ava DuVernay's "A Wrinkle in Time," which is based on the novel of the same name by Madeleine L'Engle. The film follows a young girl, Meg, who's given the near impossible task of traveling through time and space to rescue her father, a famed scientist who disappeared while researching time travel. In honor of the movie's arrival in theaters on March 9, 2018, Wonderwall.com is taking a closer look at the cast of this family-friendly fantasy adventure. Keep reading for more…

Storm Reid stars as Meg Murry in "A Wrinkle in Time." Meg is a complex young girl who's brilliant but also deeply hurt by the disappearance of her father, Dr. Alex Murry. Like any teen, she responds to the pain of her loss by acting out at school, which frequently gets her in trouble. Although Meg's clearly gorgeous, she struggles with low self-esteem. Thankfully, she's got a smart and beautiful mother, Dr. Kate Murry, to help her get through the tough times. She also has a few allies to help her on her journey, including her youngest brother, Charles Wallace, and her slightly older crush, Calvin.

Storm Reid might be a relative newcomer to fame but she's certainly not new to the big screen. The 14-year-old actress is probably best known for her brief but powerful role in the 2013 film "12 Years a Slave" in which she played Eliza's daughter, Emily, who was ripped away from her mother and sold by slave traders. Storm also had a role in the 2016 sci-fi action drama "Sleight," in which she played Tina, the little sister of main character Bo. When Storm was cast as Meg Murry in "A Wrinkle in Time," director Ava DuVernay said she was "a tremendously talented young actress who embodies the hopes, dreams and spirit of a character."
Oprah Winfrey stars as Mrs. Which in "A Wrinkle in Time." In the book, Mrs. Which is a shape-shifting supernatural being who, along with her two friends, Mrs. Whatsit and Mrs. Who, work in the light serving the forces of good. It is Mrs. Which who forms the closest bond with the story's main character, Meg, and gives her young charge the clues she needs to solve the mystery of what happened to her father.
Of course, Oprah Winfrey needs no introduction. Oprah, who spent 25 years as the host of her own talk show (while also working as an executive producer on film and TV and, occasionally, as an actress), has transitioned into a full-fledged cinema star with roles in major motion pictures like "The Color Purple," "Selma" (both of which earned her Oscar nods), "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" and, most recently, "A Wrinkle in Time." In 2018, along with producing shows like "Queen Sugar," "Oprah's Master Class" and "Greenleaf," Oprah will also begin filming two movies: the comedy remake of "Terms of Endearment" and the biographical drama "Richard Pryor: Is it Something I Said?"
Reese Witherspoon stars as Mrs. Whatsit in "A Wrinkle in Time." Like Mrs. Which, Mrs. Whatsit is an ethereal being of goodness and light who is dedicated to helping the main character, Meg, find her father and defeat the darkness that's taking over the world. In the book version of the story, Mrs. Whatsit is the youngest of the three beings who was once a star who bravely sacrificed herself to defeat the encroaching darkness.
Oscar-winning actress Reese Witherspoon has always been America's sweetheart, but over the last few years, she's also become a champion of women. Whether it's by sharing her personal experiences with sexual misconduct, by spearheading the Time's Up movement or by launching a red lipstick with cosmetics brand Elizabeth Arden that donates 100 percent of its proceeds to UN Women, the "Big Little Lies" star (and executive producer) isn't just talking the talk, she's walking the walk. Along with starring in "A Wrinkle in Time" in 2018, Reese is reprising her role as Madeline on "Big Little Lies" and is set to begin filming the live-action fantasy adventure "Tinkerbell."
Mindy Kaling stars as Mrs. Who in "A Wrinkle in Time." Like Mrs. Which and Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who is a being of light who joins her supernatural friends to help the story's main character, Meg Murry, defeat the darkness that's holding her father captive. In the book, Mrs. Who is quite brilliant, speaking in quotes from famous authors like Shakespeare and Dante, as well as in numerous languages, such as Latin and French.
New mom (and former "The Office" actress, writer and producer) Mindy Kaling has so much to celebrate in 2018. Although her Hulu series "The Mindy Project" came to a close in 2017, Mindy's got a lot of new projects in the works. Along with starring in "A Wrinkle in Time," Mindy has a role in the upcoming comedy series "Champions" (which she also writes and produces) and a leading role in the June 8 action thriller "Oceans 8" alongside Rihanna, Anne Hathaway and Sandra Bullock. She also had the pleasure of getting one of the coolest baby gifts ever from her friend and co-star, Oprah Winfrey. In an interview with USA Today, Mindy shared that Oprah sent her newborn daughter, Katherine, a decorative tree-house inspired bookcase made of hand-carved wood and loaded with classic children's books that all had "Katherine's Book Club" on them.
Comedic actor Zach Galifianakis stars as the sensitive and emotional character The Happy Medium in "A Wrinkle in Time." In the novel, The Happy Medium was a woman with psychic abilities who exuded happiness and joy until she had to look into her crystal ball and see the darkness enveloping Earth. It is The Happy Medium who prepares Meg, her friend Calvin and little brother Charles with the knowledge they need to face the evil that lies ahead. Of his new take on the role, Zach has shared that he hopes "boys will see that it's okay to have a sensitive side."
If funnyman Zach Galifianakis looks different these days, that's probably because he's 50 pounds lighter than he was during his "The Hangover" days — which he claims happened after he chose to give up drinking in real life (because it was getting him "into too much trouble"). The father of two has been moving toward more family-centered films lately, which is why he's so proud to be a part of the "A Wrinkle in Time" cast. Zach can also be seen on the dramatic comedy series "Baskets," which he executive produces.
Chris Pine stars as Dr. Alex Murry in "A Wrinkle in Time." Alex is a brilliant physicist who spent his life studying the time space continuum. When he discovered something powerful about time travel, an evil force known as the darkness abducted him, leaving him trapped in another dimension without his wife and four children. Now it's up to his oldest daughter, Meg, to use the power of light (and the help of her friends) to rescue him.
"Wonder Woman" and "Star Trek" actor Chris Pine is busier than ever in 2018. Along with starring in "A Wrinkle in Time," the handsome actor (and notorious bachelor) has several new projects in the works, including the TV miniseries "One Day She'll Darken" (which he's also executive producing) and the Nov. 23 biographical drama "Outlaw King." Chris has also signed on to star in the upcoming "Star Trek" sequel in which he'll reprise his role as Captain James T. Kirk.
Gugu Mbatha-Raw stars as Dr. Kate Murry in "A Wrinkle in Time." Kate is a microbiologist and new single mother of four who's left raising her children after her husband, Dr. Alex Murry, suddenly disappears one day. Along with being smart and kind, Kate is beautiful, which makes her oldest daughter, Meg, feel even more insecure.
British actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw is popping up in everything we're watching these days. The "Belle" and "Free State of Jones" star also has two Netflix films currently in the queue, "The Cloverfield Paradox" and "Irreplaceable You," and two more projects on the horizon, the TV movie "Fabled" and the 2019 crime drama "Motherless Brooklyn." In 2018, along with starring in "A Wrinkle in Time," Gugu (which is short for Gugulethu) will also appear in the crime thriller "Fast Color."
Levi Miller (left) stars as Calvin and Deric McCabe (center) stars as Charles Wallace alongside Storm Reid as Meg (right) in "A Wrinkle in Time." Calvin is a high school junior who's popular among his classmates but is secretly a huge nerd who loves science. He also happens to be Meg's crush. Charles is Meg's youngest brother with whom she shares a close bond. In the book, Charles possesses a unique ability to know things and can even read minds. Both boys join Meg when she's sent on a journey through different dimensions of space and time to find her father and destroy the forces of darkness.
Australian actor Levi Miller got his big break in 2015 playing lead character Peter in the fantasy adventure "Pan." The 15-year-old star also appeared in the thriller "Better Watch Out," the Australian thriller "Jasper Jones" and in an episode of the popular American TV series "Supergirl." Along with starring in "A Wrinkle in Time" in 2018, Levi will also appear alongside comedian Dane Cook in the drama "American Exit."
Adorable Deric McCabe is only 9 years old, but he's been acting since he was 7. Deric's first role was in the 2016 short "XXIII Boss" followed by parts in "Stephanie" and "Hold On" (which has yet to be released). "A Wrinkle in Time" is the first big-budget major motion picture Deric's starred in, but it likely won't be this talented tween's last.
Michael Pena stars as Red in "A Wrinkle in Time." Red, short for The Man with Red Eyes, presents himself to Meg, Calvin and Charles Wallace as a kind and calm man, but the children can sense that there's something dark and foreboding about him.
"Narcos" star Michael Pena is heating up the big screen in 2018 and we've got our fans ready. Along with starring in "A Wrinkle in Time" (where he does bad so, so good), Michael has roles in "12 Strong" plus three upcoming films: the Marvel superhero flick "Ant-Man and the Wasp," the animated adventure "Next Gen" and the sci-fi thriller "Extinction." Michael's been married since 2006 to screenwriter Brie Shaffer. The couple share a 9-year-old son, Roman.
Andre Holland stars as Principal Jenkins in "A Wrinkle in Time." In the book, Principal Jenkins is cold and unsupportive toward Meg but we're hoping that in the movie version, this educator has a little more heart.
Andre Holland isn't a lead actor (yet), but he's had supporting roles in some of the biggest films of the decade, including the Oscar-winning drama "Moonlight" and the Oscar-nominated biographical drama "Selma." Andre is next set to co-star in the 2018 crime thriller "Widows" and is a series regular on the TV drama "Castle Rock."
Rowan Blanchard (center) stars as Veronica in "A Wrinkle in Time." What's exciting about Veronica is that we have no idea who she is in the storyline since the film's director, Ava DuVernay, actually created the role specifically for the movie. By the looks of this image, though, we're definitely picking up on some major mean-girl vibes.
Rowan Blanchard, 16, has only been acting since 2010 but the talented young star has racked up some pretty impressive credits so far, including a starring role on the TV family comedy "Girl Meets World" and a series regular spot on the comedy "The Goldbergs." Rowan shared that she'd been following director Ava DuVernay on social media for a while and when she heard about "A Wrinkle in Time," she wrote a letter to Ava, hoping to be involved with the project in any way possible. That's how she ended up landing a part that didn't previously exist that was created just for her by Ava.
