Fashion hits and misses from the 2020 Golden Globes

From bold ballgowns to multiple red dresses to some surprising missteps from some of our favorites, the fashion was anything but boring at the 2020 Golden Globes. And now that the awards have been handed out, it's time to get to the fun part — rounding up the best and worst looks. First up, a shockingly flagrant miss from the one and only J. Lo! Jennifer Lopez arrived as a nominee, but ended up going home sans trophy and on multiple worst dressed lists. The usually fabulously dressed superstar opted to wear this disastrous Valentino gown, comprised of a distracting amount of fabric and shades up top and a seriously dramatic full white skirt on the bottom. And her beauty look and jewelry choices didn't fare much better. Keep reading to take a look and see the rest of the night's hits and misses…

We're not quite sure what Jennifer Lopez was going for when she rocked her gorgeous hair in a bizarre overly braided updo. The only element of her look we could get behind? Her Harry Winston jewels, which featured diamonds and emeralds that complemented the green hue in that ridiculous Valentino gown.

The award for the most unexpected look of the night? That goes to Kerry Washington! The star stepped on the carpet in this jaw-dropping number from Altuzarra — a strategically placed jacket and black silk skirt with a thigh-high slit. And in lieu of a shirt? Kerry opted for some unexpected jewelry! The sparkly rope-style accessory linked her jacket and skirt and made for one of the most talked about and memorable fashion moments of the night. We loved every bit of it, and the way that she added a pop of color with that bold red lip. Bravo!

Another unexpected, yet show-stopping look of the night? Zoe Kravitz's adorable Saint Laurent dress! The black and white confection featured an off-the-shoulder neckline, and a smaller black and white polka dot print bodice juxtaposed against a much bigger polka dot print skirt. And it was tied together with a sweet bow at the waist for an A+ style moment. Keeping with the black and white theme? Her earrings! See them next…

Zoe Kravitz complemented her darling Saint Laurent ensemble with black and white diamond Lorraine Schwartz earrings. And when it came time for makeup, she added a dramatic red lip to complete this fabulous look.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have our first "Yikes!" of the evening. Taylor Swift arrived in this bold Etro Couture gown, comprised of a very loud floral print. Though there was a break in the curtain-like fabric via a cutout at the waist, with this much fabric and that dramatic train there was no saving this fashion miss.

Next up, Jennifer Aniston's Dior Haute Couture ballgown. From the ruffled neckline to that gorgeous flowing skirt, we loved this silhouette on the A-list star. She complemented the frock with a simple, yet stunning Fred Leighton diamond necklace, and rocked her famous tresses down and wavy.

Another of our least favorite looks of the night? That came from typically stylish star Michelle Williams. The nominee arrived in this orange Louis Vuitton gown, which lost us starting at the neckline. Let's take a closer look…

From the odd blue detail and the low-slung off-the-shoulder bow on the right side to yet another bow detail on the left, this gown had no chances of improving. And even though the rest of that orange frock was inoffensive, it just couldn't be salvaged.

Saoirse Ronan made a splash in this stunning sparkly number. The star arrived in this flawless Celine gown with gorgeously studded spaghetti straps and a thigh-high slit. Let's take a closer look…

Another star we were shocked to see hit the miss list this year? Sienna Miller! Though she's been known to be quite the fashionista, this mess of a Gucci dress landed her squarely on the miss list. The halter-style frock featured three different hues of fabric all haphazardly arranged for one of the most questionable getups of the night, which she accessorized with Forevermark jewelry.

Though it received mixed reviews, we loved Gwyneth Paltrow's bold brown Fendi frock. The dress took the sheer trend up a notch, featuring an almost entirely sheer bodice and semi-sheer skirt. But our favorite part of the look (aside from that unique color)? The way she rocked her jewelry with this gorgeous look. See that surprising twist next…

Leave it to Gwyneth Paltrow to find an innovative way to wear her jewels! The star rocked her Bvlgari necklace underneath her Fendi frock, and it managed to still sparkle under the sheer fabric. She also added those dazzling drop diamond earrings from the jeweler for even more bling.

Nicole Kidman was a vision in red Versace at the Golden Globes. The star dazzled in this strapless gown with a thigh-high slit and dramatic train, and she wasn't the only one to rock red on the carpet!

Look at this lovely lady in red! Lauren Graham opted to match the red carpet in this Azzi & Osta dress. The asymmetrical neckline gave way to a belted detail at the waist and some serious ruffling before culminating in a thigh-high slit.

Another bold red gown on the carpet? Scarlett Johansson's strapless red Vera Wang ballgown. The elaborate confection featured a seriously plunging neckline and a full skirt, but you really need to see it from the back to get the full effect…

We told you that you needed to see the back! Scarlett Johansson's Vera Wang gown was even more dramatic from the other side, with that oversized bow and lengthy train. And the low cut gave us a peek at her back tattoo. Despite the drama of it all, we have to say Scarlett's was our least favorite red selection of the night.

With all the dark dresses, Charlize Theron brought a much needed pop of color to the red carpet. The "Bombshell" star arrived in this vibrant lime green design by Dior Haute Couture, which featured one bold green strap on the left and a black strapless corset-style design on the right. We liked the surprising color combo, that thin belt detail and the way the gown incorporated another dash of black to the confection with that draped detail that balanced out the left side. When it came time to add accessories, Charlize Theron kept things surprising. She completed the look with a choker necklace with a emerald center stone and dashes of blue sapphire and various diamond studs from Maria Tash.

We feel like we've seen this look on Sofia Vergara dozens of times before. The "Modern Family" star selected this strapless, fitted Dolce&Gabbana frock with beaded embellishments, and though it was a pretty frock it didn't make much of an impact. Next up? When it came time to add jewels, Sofia Vergara donned this dramatic Lorraine Schwartz hoops. The clunky earrings may have matched her Dolce&Gabbana gown, but overall we weren't fans of this red carpet getup.

Brad Pitt certainly cleaned up nice! The A-lister donned this dapper Brioni tux with a black bow tie — which was definitely on trend that night — and added a white dress shirt and black dress shoes for a classic feel.

Rachel Brosnahan has served up various hits and misses on red carpets over the years, but this Michael Kors number was a serious snore. From the dull hue to the duller silhouette, this look was forgettable amidst some much bolder fashion moments of the night. She accessorized with Forevermark jewelry.

Surprise! Though Zoey Deutch's bold yellow design with long dramatic sleeves, a plunging neckline and an A-line skirt looked like a dress, it was actually a jumpsuit. Her Fendi selection featured wide-legged pants instead of a skirt for an expected twist. And though it was hard to eclipse this show-stopping design, her jewels almost did the trick! We loved Zoey Deutch's decision to add diamonds and blue-stoned jewels from Harry Winston. From the dazzling drop necklace to those floral-shaped earrings, we loved the contrast against her bright yellow gown. She completed her stellar look with a slicked back bob, warm-toned eyeshadows and a pink lip.

Yawn! Margot Robbie's Chanel getup featured a metallic printed top and starkly simple white pants. And despite the awesome addition of pockets, we felt seriously underwhelmed by this choice for the Golden Globes.

Ana de Armas made a bold statement in this navy blue sequined ballgown. Her Ralph & Russo confection paired perfectly with that Tiffany & Co. necklace, and made for a fabulous fashion debut at the star's first Globes.

Joey King arrived in this structural Iris Van Herpen design. And though we applauded her sartorial choice, we're not sure it was the right fit for such a big night. From the high neck to the bare shoulders and those super dramatic sleeves, all the detailing certainly made up for the minidress silhouette, but we still felt this frock fell flat. Despite not loving the frock, we did love the way she paired it with those pointy-toe white pumps! Next up? A closer look at her hair and makeup…

Though we weren't crazy about that Iris Van Herpen confection, we did love Joey King's beauty look. The star opted for silver-rimmed eye makeup and a pink lip and completed her look with those unique structured diamond earrings.

Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy winner Awkwafina rocked this unique Dior ensemble and we loved the twist on the pantsuit. Instead of pants she rocked her suit jacket and ruffled blouse with a black skirt, and when it came time to add some sparkle, she rocked Forevermark jewelry. And in the process, the star earned herself a spot on the fashion hit list.

This powder blue hue was a breath of fresh air on the red carpet! Renee Zellweger's strapless Giorgio Armani gown made the hit list thanks to the gorgeous shade and the way that strapless neckline was bordered in delicate gemstones for an extra dash of sparkle.

Shailene Woodley is no stranger to the miss list. And unfortunately, she landed on it again in this custom Balmain design. The funky frock featured a thin halter-style neckline ending in a circular design before giving way to a purple and black sequined gown. But one element you can't see from this angle? The super high slit up the side, which we'll show you next…

From the side, Shailene Woodley's Balmain dress showed off a scandalously high slit. And though it wasn't our cup of tea, we did like how it showed off those standout Balmain sandals.

We love an intricate pantsuit! Phoebe Waller-Bridge served up exactly that in this fabulous Ralph & Russo Couture design. She wore the coordinates sans undershirt and with a pair of Jimmy Choo pumps.

Jodie Comer donned a divisive look on the red carpet. The "Killing Eve" star sported this Mary Katrantzou gown with a high neck, ruffled sleeves and a full skirt with a pair of hot pink Nicholas Kirkwood shoes. And though we appreciated the unique color choices, we couldn't get behind this strangely shaped frock. One element we did love? Her jewels!

Though her frock wasn't a winner, her earrings sure were! Jodie Comer donned these dazzling diamond stunners from Tiffany & Co.

Gillian Anderson opted for this sleek white gown, which featured a half cape-like detail and half sleeveless style. Aside from the interesting top half, the rest of the gown was classically simple, a fitted column-style skirt that made a glamorous statement. Next up? We loved this little surprise! Though Gillian Anderson opted for simple glamour, when she turned around she'd added a little sparkle. A diamond necklace hung from the back, which complemented her dangly diamond earrings perfectly.

We were a little underwhelmed with Reese Witherspoon arrived on the red carpet. The nominee arrived in this sleek white gown by Roland Mouret, which felt a little dull amongst a sea of sequins and bright-hued dresses (and especially when compared to Gillian Anderson's similar, yet slightly more exciting take on white). When it came time to add jewels to her simple Roland Mouret dress, Reese Witherspoon nailed it with these beautiful Tiffany & Co. earrings. And for makeup, she opted for a dramatic smokey eye and a pink lip to add some color to her ensemble.

Lucy Boynton stunned in silver on the Golden Globes carpet. From the high neck to those sweet short sleeves to the pleated skirt, this metallic Louis Vuitton number was fabulous enough on his own. But the star added her own twist with her signature dramatic makeup, and this year she didn't disappoint…

The award for the most exquisite eye makeup goes to Lucy Boynton! Check out the stunning detail of her silver winged eyeliner and eyeshadow. Aside from that pretty detail she also added a gorgeous hair accessory that added another metallic hue — gold.

Though we loved the color of Bel Powley's Miu Miu confection, we weren't as in love with the silhouette. Her baby blue design featured some seriously exaggerated sleeves and a ruffled plunging neckline that ended in a sweet bow, but this dramatic top half felt unbalanced compared to the gown's simple skirt. Bel Powley opted for an updo, keeping the attention on her Miu Miu statement gown. And when it came time to select makeup shades, she opted for an all-over pink-hued eyeshadow and a bright pink lip. Finishing off this bold ensemble? Those stunning drop diamond earrings.

Dakota Fanning's lilac confection gave us fairy princess vibes on the red carpet. The star's Dior design featured sweet puffy short sleeves, braided detailing and a full pleated skirt. Next up? A better look at her stellar jewelry selection…

When it came time to add diamonds, Dakota Fanning opted for jewels by Dior as well. And she stuck with a very specific theme — floral! We loved the delicate floral rings she wore, and she also added a diamond floral necklace…

As always, some stars arrive in designs that prove polarizing to fashion fans, and Cate Blanchett's Mary Katranzou gown received both good and bad reviews. We loved the futuristic structure of the frock and the interesting beaded bodice, but we weren't obsessed with that pale yellow hue.

There was a lot of black on the Golden Globes carpet. One of the standouts? Naomi Watts in this Armani Prive design. From the criss-crossed halter style neckline to the glimmering fabric, this black gown was anything but boring. And she accessorized with some unique jewels…

Aside from her stunning Armani gown, we also liked Naomi Watts's jewelry choice. She opted to go sans necklace and instead donned these uniquely designed diamond earrings by Tabayer.

Another underwhelming look? Rose Leslie's emerald Elie Saab dress. Though the color was stunning, the half-sheer skirt embraced a dying trend and the various embellishments felt a little dizzying.

Sofia Carson certainly knows how to make an entrance! The star arrived in style in this stunning pale pink statement gown, which featured a feathered bodice and a full tiered tulle skirt. With a dress this elaborate, we have to take a closer look…

Sofia Carson scored an A+ on the Golden Globes carpet, thanks to that beautiful dress and equally stunning makeup. From her pink-rimmed eye makeup to her pale pink lip, we loved the way the hues complemented her gown. And those stunning pink-hued gemstones by Kallati on her ears certainly didn't hurt matters.

The pale pink hue of Kirsten Dunst's Rodarte gown was lovely, but the silhouette let us down. Though the lacy high-necked detail started out strong, the sheer detailing on the bodice paired with the drop waist and awkward length of the skirt turned this potential hit into a miss in our books.

Pretty in pink! Tiffany Haddish wowed in this bubblegum pink Galia Lahav gown, which featured a sleeveless cut, low neckline and gathered detailing at the waist.

A few stars selected jewelry that nearly eclipsed their couture gowns. One of those ladies? Cynthia Erivo, who stepped on to the carpet in this structured and sparkly black and white Thom Browne. And though the gown was dazzling, nothing could compare to the Bulgari jewels she sported. Let's get a better glance…

Wow! Cynthia Erivo's Bulgari eye-catching necklace stole the show when it came to her red carpet ensemble. Her necklace featured alternating diamond and blue-hued gemstones, with a gorgeous drop pendant, and she rocked even more diamonds on her ears.

Anna Paquin's floral Dior gown felt way too casual for one of Hollywood's biggest nights. The star's frock featured black lace detailing at the sleeves and hemline, but it wasn't enough to jazz up the otherwise simple design.

Helen Mirren's burgundy Dior Haute Couture number made for a regal red carpet moment. The off-the-shoulder gown featured a glamorous train and paired perfectly with her stunning Harry Winston jewels.

Billy Porter is always guaranteed to make a fashion statement, and he didn't disappoint at this year's Golden Globes! The "Pose" star arrived in this custom Alex Vinash design — which took three months to create! — which featured a white silk tuxedo adorned with an insane train filled with extravagant feathers. We applaud this bold fashion choice!

Metallics were seriously trending on the Globes red carpet! Christina Applegate continued the trend in this black and silver studded sequin gown by Pamella Roland, which featured long sleeves, a plunging neckline and a sleek fitted silhouette

Sorry, Zuri Hall. We weren't crazy about this sparkly copper number. The high-necked, long-sleeved gown by JOVANI featured a sky-high slit that we didn't adore, though we did love the interesting sandals she paired it with.

Looking sharp, Ben Platt! Sometimes it's best to just stick with the classics on a big night like the Globes. The nominee heeded that advice, rocking this sleek head-to-toe Louis Vuitton look, a black suit, white dress shirt, bow tie and dress shoes.

One dress that missed the mark on Golden Globes night? Kristin Cavallari's. Her strapless gown featured an odd triangular cutout along the waist on the left side. And although we liked the pale pink and white color combo, the unnecessary cutout lost us.

Giuliana Rancic opted for a sleek silver number on the red carpet, and we were underwhelmed. The long-sleeved gown featured a thigh-high slit and plunging neckline, but despite the sparkles it didn't have a dressy feel for one of Hollywood's biggest nights.

Giuliana Rancic debuted lighter hued locks on the Globes carpet. The host gave us Donatella Versace vibes with these light locks, and she opted for metallic-hued eyeshadow and a coral lip for a pop of color when it came to makeup.

Joe Alwyn stuck with a classic black tux for the big night — which he completed with a black bow tie and dress shoes for a surefire men's fashion hit.

So fetch? Jonathan Bennett arrived in a black tuxedo jacket, which was perfect for the occasion, but the rest of his look fell flat. From the dress shirt's piping to the gray bow tie to the ill-fitting slacks, we just couldn't get behind Jonathan Bennett's look.

We loved Ryan Seacrest's teal velvet tuxedo jacket. The host added a white dress shirt and a black bow tie and completed his debonair ensemble with black dress pants and shoes.

Sibley Scoles rocked a sparkly pantsuit on the red carpet, but we weren't wild about how it was styled. The black pantsuit with silver stripes felt a little ill-fitting and when paired without a shirt underneath fell flat.

Natalie Morales rocked this vibrant off-the-shoulder gown on the red carpet. From the slim fit to that glamorous train, we loved the silhouette but think it needed a little more sparkle or glam for such a big night.
