Despite the 2020 Independent Spirit Awards being a daytime event, the stars spared no expense when it came to fashion. From frills and florals to an abundance of capes and color choices in anticipation of Valentine's Day, Wonderwall.com is rounding up the best and worst dressed stars, starting with Naomi Watts. Where do we even begin with this one? The star arrived in what seems like a perfectly lovely hot pink printed gown, but opted to really mess things up when it came to the styling. The star accessorized by draping a black blazer atop her shoulders, carrying a clashing bright red clutch and finishing her look with those hideous black-toed white boots. When accessorizing her Fendi suit, Amber Heard opted for mismatched hoops and layer after layer of eclectic necklaces. But when paired with the already busy pantsuit this look fell flat for us.
Who wore it best? Scarlett Johansson arrived in a contrasting black and white polka dotted frock that reminded us a lot of Zoe Kravitz's Golden Globes look last month. The "Marriage Story" star's version featured bigger polka dots along the top, while the rest was white with tiny black dots. And though on first glance we definitely preferred Zoe's, Scarlett's Balmain dress did have one feature that made it stand out…
Instead of simple polka dots, upon closer inspection Scarlett Johansson's oversized polka dots were actually sequined and sparkly studded. This unique twist on the frock made us fall for the black and white Balmain number, which she paired with pointy-toe black pumps.
Another major trend on the blue carpet? Pink! Perhaps stars were embracing a Valentine's Day color palette? Joey King opted for various shades of the hue in this Oscar de la Renta minidress. And though we loved the variety of pinks — and the way she topped it with a bubblegum pink blazer — we weren't crazy about the frock's unnecessary tail-like train. Despite that setback, we did love the nice pink Christian Louboutin pumps she added.
Another star who not only opted for pink, but also topped it with a bright pink blazer? America Ferrera, who arrived in this sweet baby pink lace frock by Self Portrait with a tie detail at the neckline. Like Joey King, she also rocked a hot pink blazer from Carolina Herrera on top, mixing shades of pink perfectly just a few days ahead of Valentine's Day.
Stars can get away with a lot more fashion risks at this daytime event, but this super short black Versace minidress on Emily Ratajkowski wasn't one of them. Though it tried to have personality with the ruched, structured sleeves, the super short skirt and the pairing with lace-up sandals placed this look firmly on our miss list.
We love a good optical illusion on the red (or blue!) carpet, and Aubrey Plaza served up a stellar one in this black and red pantsuit! From afar it almost looked like a chic red blouse tucked into black pants, but upon closer inspection her look was actually a two-toned red and black blazer buttoned at the waist with a tail detail. And to get the full effect of her black trousers, you need to see it from another angle…
Aubrey Plaza's black pants also featured a surprising element — a siren red stripe down the side to complement the dual-toned blazer. A+!
Too many prints! Greta Gerwig's Independent Spirit Awards frock featured a mixing of way too much happening for our taste — from blue and white stripes to floral prints in shades of pink, yellow and green to stripes of just solid black. The midi-length skirt also felt like an odd choice considering the formal top half, and didn't mesh well with those chunky pumps.
We certainly weren't expecting this sassy appearance by Renee Zellweger! The star arrived ready to pose with her sunglasses on in this all black Dior Couture ensemble. The two piece featured a belted top with a structured neckline and peplum detail at the waist and paired perfectly with the matching ankle-length slacks. She completed her look with simple black Jimmy Choo pumps and a black clutch by Libbie Lane.
Cinderella chic! We adored Beanie Feldstein's pale blue confection by Markarian, with its puffed sleeves, black belt detail and perfect midi-length skirt. Making things even sweeter? The way she paired it with those silver platform Christian Louboutin sandals. We'll check out her gorgeous jewels next…

Though we appreciated her nod to the upcoming Valentine's holiday, we could have done without Rachel Brosnahan's tacky lip covered skirt. The star's pink and red skirt was paired with a burgundy leather crop top and a shockingly strange combination from Brandon Maxwell. She then completed her look with deep red velvet sandals by Chloe Gosselin. Next!
Not all Valentine's Day-inspired ensembles missed the mark. Take Zazie Beetz slinky white frock for instance, which was covered in red hearts! The sleeve on Zazie Beetz's unique red and white confection was essentially a heart-studded angel wing. The element featured dramatic ruffling, helping make the sweet V-Day-themed design truly standout on the blue carpet.
We weren't wild about Idina Menzel's cherry-covered Michael Kors frock. The long-sleeved, midi-length frock featured not flowers or hearts, but strangely an all-over cherry print, and the T-strap Casadei heels she paired it also felt like an odd choice.
A fringe and floral minidress wouldn't work on many red carpets, but Stephanie Beatriz pulled this blue and ivory frock off flawlessly. The dress featured plenty of fringe along the sleeves and skirt, as well as floral embellishments down the bodice. She paired it with platform pumps and a messy updo for an ideal daytime award show look.
Another floral frock we loved on the blue carpet? Kaitlyn Dever's high-necked, half-sleeved gown by Valentino, which featured a fuchsia floral print atop a lovely nude hue for a color contrast we loved.
Neutrals were certainly trending on this carpet, and Olivia Wilde embraced that with this stunning nude Fendi ballgown. The star's ethereal frock featured long dramatic sleeves, some subtly sheer paneling and feather details embroidered throughout in equally pale shades of ivory and peach.
Billie Lourd donned this navy blue and black plaid mini on the blue carpet, which featured a thick belt detail. Though the dress was fine, the styling had us scratching our heads. The star rocked her hair in a half-up, half-down style, added funky bracelets and even stranger heels. See them next…
When it came time to add shoes, Billie Lourd strangely selected this black and white Dior heels, which featured white straps emblazoned with the word "J'Adior".
Mindy Kaling embraced florals on the blue carpet in this Carolina Herrera number. We loved the bold, multicolored floral print on the star and the way she paired it with shiny black pumps.
Yikes. Elisabeth Moss arrived in this messy menswear-inspired getup — an ill-fitting suit suit by Co with a white Theory blouse and an undone tie — which equated to a serious fashion misstep.
Hunter Schafer looked like an angel in this all-white getup. The "Euphoria" star frocked this ruffly long-sleeved look from Loewe with pointy-toe white boots by Malone Souliers for a fresh blue carpet ensemble, which paired nicely with her beachy waves and dark red lip.
Though we love tulips, Jocelyn DeBoer's tulip garden frock was a bit much for our taste. The ankle-length frock included an all-over tulip print with bell sleeves, a big black bow at the neckline, a thin black belt detail and a ruffle at the bottom of the skirt. Despite not loving this over-the-top ensemble, we did appreciate the way she paired it with bright yellow heels. Next up? A look at her equally loud makeup…
When it came time for makeup, Jocelyn DeBoer's truly lost us. The star arrived with this insane hot pink eyeshadow, which not only went all the way around her eyes, but also spread inexplicably to her hairline.
Time for a little more Valentine's Day spirit! Rhea Seehorn rocked bubblegum pink and cherry red together with this short-sleeved lacy frock, which she ultimately paired with red heels for a super sweet look.
This odd silhouette was not what we were expecting on Alfre Woodard. The star arrived in this sleeveless minidress with a massively ruffled skirt. Making matters worse? She paired it with black flats with a massive buckle.
There were a surprising amount of capes at the daytime event, and we're surprised how much we liked Dawn Luebbe's addition. The star rocked a sweet baby blue gown adorned with bows underneath a delicate matching blue floral-printed cape in an unexpectedly delightful combo.
A cape with a minidress during the day? Though it doesn't sound like it would translate, Hong Chau pulled off this risky fashion move in this delightfully neutral getup. Her ruched long-sleeves and polished button-down minidress contrasted perfectly with the unexpected accessory — a matching cape that knotted at the neck and draped all the way down to the blue carpet.
The Independent Spirit Awards are a daytime event, so fashion can be tricky, but there's no excuse for Terri Seymour's odd choice. Her dark green shiny patterned knee-length frock had way too much happening — from the all-over floral print to the collar to the three-quarter-length sleeves to that pleated skirt — and landed on the miss list.
From afar, Lydia Hearst's denim blue frock looked like it might actually be made of the casual fabric! But up close it was a subtly sequined strapless gown, which subtly matched the event's blue carpet.
