Celebrities often fall for their co-stars and, when those relationships don't work out, sometimes even have to continue to act alongside one another. In anticipation of the "Preacher" Season 3 premiere on June 24, 2018, Wonderwall.com is taking a look at former couples who had to work together after splitting up, starting with Ruth Negga and Dominic Cooper. The Irish actress and the English actor, who play a couple on "Preacher," dated for eight years before news of their breakup made headlines in April 2018. Jennifer Carpenter and Michael C. Hall might have played brother and sister on "Dexter," but in real life, the sparks were flying. The twosome began dating in 2007 and eloped on New Year's Eve in 2009. Their romance didn't last, however, and the two filed for divorce in 2010. Their divorce was finalized in 2011 and the former lovebirds continued to shoot "Dexter" together for another two years. "The fact that Jennifer and I worked through whatever was going on with us personally the way we did and maintained telling the story was never in question," Michael said at a PaleyFest event in 2013. "It was always what we needed or wanted to do." Jennifer added, "Just because the marriage ended doesn't mean the love did."

Just like their characters on "The Office," Mindy Kaling and B.J. Novak dated for a while after joining the show as actors and writers in 2004. Then, Mindy told Howard Stern, "He broke up with me." But even though she was "so sad," she added, "that was the hottest I ever looked because I stopped eating. When I get depressed, I stop eating so I was so miserable and I was so beautiful." They continued to work together on the sitcom for years and have remained incredibly close friends to this day.

It was love at first sight when Chad Michael Murray and Sophia Bush met on the set of "One Tree Hill." The pair began dating and got engaged in May 2004, marrying nearly a year later in April 2005. Less than six moths later, however, the couple filed for divorce — but continued working together for another two years. "We were two stupid kids who had no business being in a relationship in the first place. To all the other co-stars who've worked it out, more power to you," Sophia has said.

Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev fell head over heels in love while co-starring on "The Vampire Diaries" in 2010. After a three-year relationship, the two parted ways but their characters continued to lust after one another for two more seasons.

Blake Lively and Penn Badgley had chemistry on- and off-screen while starring on "Gossip Girl." The twosome, who played on-again, off-again couple Serena and Dan, started dating in 2007 and were inseparable for three years. After calling it quits in 2010, Blake and Penn still worked together — their characters even got married in the series finale.

Ed Westwick and Jessica Szohr fell for one another on the set of "Gossip Girl" in 2008. Their relationship lasted two years and came to an end amid reports of cheating. Somehow the former lovebirds, who played Chuck and Vanessa, continued to act together on the hit CW show after their messy breakup.

Katie Holmes and Joshua Jackson were deep in puppy love while working on the set of "Dawson's Creek" in the '90s. In fact, Katie referred to Josh as her "first love" at the time. Sadly, their relationship didn't last, but there was no bad blood between the two. Both Katie and Joshua continued to star on the WB series for years. "I feel so fortunate because he's now one of my best friends. It's weird, it's almost like a Dawson-and-Joey-type thing now," Katie once said.

Sparks flew when Rachel Bilson and Adam Brody met on the set of "The O.C." in 2003. The co-stars, who played on-screen couple Summer Roberts and Seth Cohen, dated for three years before calling it quits in 2006. Rachel and Adam continued to amicably work together for another season.

Hayden Panettiere, then 18, and Milo Ventimiglia, then 30, started dating while starring on "Heroes" together in 2007. Their 12-year age difference eventually proved to be too much and the couple parted ways in 2009 though continued to work together on "Heroes" for one more season.

Long before he hooked up with Hayden Panettiere, Milo Ventimiglia was dating another co-star: Alexis Bledel. The former couple became an item while filming "Gilmore Girls" in 2002 and dated for four years before calling it quits. The end of their romance didn't stop their professional relationship, however, and the pair continued to act together on the beloved show.

Evangeline Lilly and Dominic Monaghan might have been lost, but they did find love on-set in 2004. The "Lost" co-stars dated for five years before breaking up but continued to act on the hit show for another season.

Michael Vartan and Jennifer Garner were a couple both on and off the screen while starring together on "Alias." The twosome, who began dating in 2003, called it quits in 2004 but maintained a professional relationship at work for two more years.

Jennifer Morrison and Jesse Spencer fell hard for one another while acting on "House" in 2004. The couple became engaged on Christmas Day in 2006 but called off their relationship eight months later. Despite their canceled wedding, the two continued to work together for another three years.

Kadeem Hardison and Cree Summer were inseparable while filming "A Different World" in the early '90s. Sadly, their relationship soon fizzled out, but the twosome continued to star on the hit NBC sitcom for three more years.

Nicholas Hoult and Jennifer Lawrence hit it off after meeting on the set of "X-Men: First Class" in 2010. After dating for four years, save for a brief split in 2013, the actors parted ways for good in 2014 but had no problem working together again on "X-Men: Apocalypse" in 2016.

On-screen couple Scott Speedman and Keri Russell sparked a romance behind the scenes of "Felicity" in the early 2000s. The actors dated for a year but remained friends after breaking up and continued to work together until the series wrapped. In 2017, Scott admitted he'd been "a disaster of a boyfriend" while they were together.

Life imitated art when "The Big Bang Theory" co-stars Kaley Cuoco and Johnny Galecki secretly began dating in 2007. Long before Naya Rivera married (and divorced) Ryan Dorsey, she dated her late "Glee" co-star Mark Salling. The pair began seeing each other in 2010 but soon called it quits — and reports alleged that Naya had egged and keyed Mark's car in the wake of their breakup. Despite their bitter split, the actors continued working together for another two years.
