Wonderwall.com is taking a look back at celebs of all stripes — from Ben Affleck and Jon Hamm to Selena Gomez and Catherine Zeta-Jones — who've taken time out to seek treatment for their addiction or emotional issues, starting with Colton Haynes. During an interview with Attitude magazine that hit the Internet on March 28, 2019, the "Arrow" star revealed that he's struggled with alcohol and drug addiction for years. Things took a turn for the worse in early 2018 when his mother died and his marriage to Jeff Leatham collapsed. "In 10 years, there were maybe 25 days I didn't drink," Colton said. "I remember when I started, it was a couple glasses of wine, and it regressed into really dark times. … I used to blame it on my anxiety or depression issues, but really the root of all my problems was the alcohol and drugs." After several hospital stints related to drug and alcohol abuse, the 30-year-old actor was held under a 5150 — an involuntary psychiatric hold. He then finally entered a four-month treatment program. According to Attitude, he's now been sober for six months. "If anyone else had told me to get help I would be like [no]. I had to make that decision on my own," he said. "I was ready to stop running from my own problems. … Once I went to treatment, I found this amazing amount of true love for myself, and started figuring out who I am without those vices, and recognizing the people in my life who lifted me up instead of tearing me down." Added the actor, "I'm always going to be in recovery. There are so many people struggling out there, but not a lot of them talk about it. Life is much more beautiful than I could have imagined. … It's just a different life now. It's the best gift I've ever been given." John Stamos entered a 30-day residential substance abuse program in July 2015 — a month after police charged him with DUI after they caught him driving erratically in Beverly Hills. In February 2019, the "Full House" actor credited co-star Jodie Sweetin with helping him get sober. While honoring her with an award recognizing her work advocating for the recovery community at an event in Los Angeles, John said, "It took me a long time, a long time disappointing everyone who cared about me, culminating in a terrible DUI where I could have killed somebody. I hit rock bottom. Jodie lovingly allowed me to walk my own path and when I finally humbled myself to ask for [her] help, I realized that the perky little blabbermouth had become the master of wisdom and was right by my side during some of the most difficult days of my life. … Thank God, my wife and my new son will only know me as a sober husband and father. This is Jodie's legacy in my life." The former child star reportedly organized 12-step meetings for the actor on the set of "Fuller House."

During an interview with Us Weekly that hit the Internet on Feb. 12, 2019, Ronnie Ortiz-Magro revealed that he'd just spent around a month at Headwaters treatment center in West Palm Beach, Florida, to deal with his depression and alcohol issues. "I decided to go to treatment because I wanted to be a better person, a better father for my daughter," he said. "Eventually, all the bad decisions I was making were going to lead me to places that I didn't want to be. I wanted to be led to the place that I am now — that's happy, healthy and the best role model for my daughter." He added of his problems with alcohol, "I think it's a chronic disease. It's a progressive disease. I'm still struggling. … You stop and you start up again, and it's worse than when you stopped. You're just like, 'Wow, I thought I had this under control,' but at the end of the day, it has full control over you."
Demi Lovato was just 18 when she checked into a medical center to get help with an eating disorder and self-harm issues. She later revealed she was also abusing cocaine, pills and alcohol. In July 2018 — a few months after marking six years of sobriety — Demi overdosed on opioids and spent nearly two weeks in a Los Angeles hospital fighting for her life before heading to an out-of-state rehab facility for a three-month treatment program.
Ben Affleck was a fresh-faced 28 year old when he entered rehab for issues with alcohol in 2001. And it was Charlie Sheen, of all people, who booked Ben's room at Promises in Malibu (Charlie had previously had his own stay at the famed rehab center). Ben's father was an alcoholic, and Ben apparently wanted to head off his own issues before they got out of hand. His addiction reared its head again in 2017, and again, Ben tried to get ahead of it. In March 2017, he announced on Facebook, "I have completed treatment for alcohol addiction; something I've dealt with in the past and will continue to confront. I want to live life to the fullest and be the best father I can be. I want my kids to know there is no shame in getting help when you need it, and to be a source of strength for anyone out there who needs help but is afraid to take the first step," he said. "I'm lucky to have the love of my family and friends, including my co-parent, Jen, who has supported me and cared for our kids as I've done the work I set out to do. This was the first of many steps being taken towards a positive recovery." In August 2018, following a difficult period of relapse, Ben entered rehab for the third time. His estranged wife, Jennifer Garner, was photographed driving him to The Canyon at Peace Park, a luxe and world-class facility in Malibu.
In February 2014, reports surfaced alleging that Selena Gomez secretly spent time in rehab the previous month. Sources at the time told TMZ that her stay was for alcohol, pot and Ambien, while widespread reports also blamed her toxic on-off relationship with Justin Bieber for her problems. Her rep later confirmed that the singer-actress spent two weeks at an Arizona treatment center but insisted it wasn't for drugs. "Selena voluntarily spent time at Meadows but not for substance abuse," her rep said in a statement. In 2015, Selena claimed she was actually in rehab after receiving chemo treatment for lupus. She again sought help for her issues, which include anxiety and depression, multiple times in 2018.
"The Real Housewives of New York" star Luann de Lesseps first checked into rehab after she was arrested for allegedly attacking a cop during an alcohol-fueled tirade on Dec. 24, 2017. On July 16, 2018, her pal and co-star Bethenny Frankel announced that Luann was again seeking treatment.
Hayden Panettiere has struggled since the birth of her daughter, Katya Klitschko, in December 2014. She's twice entered rehab to help herself cope with postpartum depression — once in September 2015 and again in May 2016. "The postpartum depression I have been experiencing has impacted every aspect of my life," she explained. "Rather than stay stuck due to unhealthy coping mechanisms I have chosen to take time to reflect holistically on my health and life. Wish me luck!"
In March 2015, Jon Hamm announced that he had completed a stint in rehab. "With the support of his longtime partner Jennifer Westfeldt, Jon Hamm recently completed treatment for his struggle with alcohol addiction," a rep for the "Mad Men" star said at the time. With the completion of the hit AMC drama (and his eventual split from Jennifer), Jon kept a low profile — at least until he won an Emmy later that year.
In 2011 and again in April 2013, Catherine Zeta-Jones entered treatment for bipolar disorder. Commenting on the second stay, her rep said that the actress is "committed to periodic care in order to manage her health in an optimum manner."
Everyone was shocked when Daniel Radcliffe started talking about his struggle with alcohol and getting sober in 2012 — at the age of 23. But the "Harry Potter" star has been extremely honest about his addiction issues. "Anytime I'd go out to dance, camera phones would come out," Daniel explained. "That would make me very self-conscious, and what's the easiest way to escape being self-conscious? Alcohol is a quick way of doing that."
Mary-Kate Olsen spent six weeks at Utah's Cirque Lodge dealing with an eating disorder in 2004. The former child star, who was 18 at the time, spent time focusing on herself before enrolling at New York University that fall. Since then, Mary-Kate and twin sister Ashley Olsen have focused their energy on their fashion labels including The Row and have largely put acting behind them.
In October 2006, Keith Urban checked into the Betty Ford Center in Southern California for 90 days for alcohol abuse. The time was shocking as it was only four months after the country crooner married Nicole Kidman. At the time, Keith released a statement, explaining: "I deeply regret the hurt this has caused Nicole and the ones who love and support me. One can never let one's guard down on recovery, and I'm afraid that I have."
Matthew Perry has been open in recent years about his struggles with booze and opiates during his tenure on "Friends." He had several stays in rehab, but the now-sober actor has found a positive side to his problems: With the help of an addiction expert, he founded Perry House, a men's sober-living facility in Malibu, California.
In early 2008, Eva Mendes spent several weeks at Cirque Lodge in Utah dealing with undisclosed substance abuse issues. Of course, she is now on top of the world: In the spring of 2016, she gave birth to her second daughter with Ryan Gosling.
Zac Efron knocked us over when he went to rehab for alleged cocaine and Molly problems back in 2013. He reportedly had a relapse and went back a second time just weeks later.
Early in her career, Kesha carefully cultivated her image as a party girl, dropping lyrics about taking shots and brushing her teeth with a bottle of Jack Daniels. But the singer went to rehab in January 2014 for an eating disorder — not for drugs or alcohol abuse. She left after two months and wrote on Twitter that she was "feeling healthy & working on tons of new music."
Kirsten Dunst entered Utah's Cirque Lodge in 2008 to seek help for her depression. One source told People magazine that she had been hit hard by Heather Ledger's death — and there was also talk of erratic behavior at Sundance. "I know what it's like to lose yourself, to no longer know the difference between right or wrong," the actress told BlackBook in 2010.
Gerard Butler only looks like he's made of solid steel. He started taking prescription painkillers after suffering a surfing accident during the filming of "Chasing Mavericks" in 2011. In early 2012, he spent three weeks at the Betty Ford Center. Responding to rumors that the rehab stay was for alcohol, he said he "hadn't had a drink in 15 years."
In January 2012, Demi Moore was rushed to the hospital after suffering what appeared to be a seizure during a party at her home. In a 911 call made during the incident, a woman told the operator that Demi had been "smoking something." (Some reports claimed she'd been inhaling nitrous oxide.) In February, she checked into Cirque Lodge where she allegedly underwent treatment for an eating disorder and addiction issues. Of course, this all came on the heels of her 2011 split from Ashton Kutcher. These days, Demi is helping her daughter Tallulah Willis with addiction problems of her own.
Bruce Willis and Demi Moore's daughter Tallulah Willis spent 45 days in rehab after checking into a treatment facility to battle depression and drug issues in July 2014 . The burgeoning artist — who has also revealed she was diagnosed with body dysmorphic disorder at 13 — told Teen Vogue she sought help after her sister Scout Willis "forced me to see what I was doing."
Life imitating art? David Duchovny played a sex addict on "Californication" from 2007 to 2014, and in real life he went to rehab for the same issue. His stay in treatment came on the heels of his separation from wife Tea Leoni. The couple's divorce was finalized in 2014.
Lamar Odom played a part in two Los Angeles Lakers NBA championships and, more importantly, became a reality star thanks to his marriage to Khloe Kardashian. But it wasn't until Khloe started dropping hints about Lamar's drug problem on "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" that the world knew he might have a serious problem (he got in trouble with the NBA in 2001 for drug use, but that was apparently for marijuana). People magazine reported that Lamar entered rehab in 2013 for drug and alcohol abuse, but left after a day. Khloe ultimately filed for divorce in December 2013. Then in October 2015, Lamar was found unconscious in a Nevada brothel — he reportedly overdosed on cocaine and other drugs — and nearly died. His rehabilitation took months and Khloe called off the divorce. However, rumors that the former NBA star was using again in the spring of 2016 prompted Khloe to file for divorce again.
