Fashion hits and misses from the 2019 Met Gala

With a theme like "Camp: Notes on Fashion," we knew the 2019 Met Gala would be a feast for the eyes. The theme gave designers license to be as extravagant and over-the-top as they could dream — and many answered the call with feathers, sequins and miles upon miles of trains. But if this theme was built for anyone, it was Lady Gaga, who also happened to be a co-chair for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute benefit in New York City. With plenty of her most famous fashion moments adhering to camp standards, it was a given that she'd knock this Met Gala getup out of the park! So what exactly did she wear? Not one, not two, not even three different outfits! No, the superstar gave us four different looks and even changed into them all right on the pink carpet. Gaga showed up in this glamorous hot pink Brandon Maxwell gown with a 25-foot train. Some stars truly went above and beyond to adhere to the "Camp: Notes on Fashion" Met Gala theme. One of those stars? Elle Fanning! The actress slayed the theme in this Miu Miu getup plucked straight from the '70s, a coral two-piece outfit with winged sleeves and bell bottoms. There's a lot to unpack from the perfectly executed ensemble, but let's start with those necklaces.

Her beauty look was also on-point — that over-the-top winged eyeliner paired with pastel eyeshadow made a major statement, as did that bright pink lipstick and high ponytail.

Rachel Brosnahan's Erdem dress was pretty, but it could have been worn on any red carpet. The hot pink and red long-sleeved frock featured layers of tulle and black bow details down the bodice, and though it was lovely, we just don't think it was right for this momentous occasion.

When it came to beauty, Lupita Nyong'o's look was truly a work of art. From the gold afro pick additions to the rainbow of color on her eyelids and that glossy black lip, everything about her look screamed camp in the most high-fashion way.

Did Demi Moore get the "Camp: Notes on Fashion" memo? We're thinking no after one look at this incredibly boring black Saint Laurent dress. Though she accessorized with some pretty Harry Winston jewels, not even diamonds could salvage this off-theme look.

Kylie's strapless frock was comprised of hand-embroidered Swarovski crystals in a chain pattern and featured a mermaid silhouette. It also included feathers like big sis Kendall's ensemble — though hers were in a complementary lilac shade.

A romper with a train? Yikes! That's what Lili Reinhart wore to the Met Gala. Her blue off-the-shoulder romper featured massive sleeves and an excessive train, but even with a theme like "Camp: Notes on Fashion," we couldn't get behind this look.

This year's Met Gala entrance was lined in pink — so Cardi B took it upon herself to bring the red carpet! Her Thom Browne design was a stunning rich red hue featuring concentric circles that went on and on for 10 feet. The intricate gown, which was made up of tulle and silk organza, was decorated with feathers and topped off with a stunning headpiece. Let's see that next…

Look at the detailing on that headpiece! Thom Browne made Cardi B's bugle-bead head covering in collaboration with Stephen Jones, and the results were over-the-top fabulous. Equally eye-catching? Her flawless makeup — check out that ruby red lip!

Kristen Stewart rocked Chanel on the Met Gala pink carpet but still managed to make the classic fashion house look camp with her multicolored hairstyle and bleached eyebrows. It redeemed her considering her black sequined crop top and high-waisted white sequined pants were all too boring.

Yara Shahidi's custom Prada design was inspired by a '50s swimsuit, and though we loved it from the top, once it gave way to tights and that odd heel selection, we were lost. But we do give her props for that gorgeous black feathered coat! And that killer bouffant hairstyle.

Emily Ratajkowski channelled a camp icon — Cher! Her Dundas getup left very little to the imagination while bringing plenty of sparkle with a matching headpiece, allowing her to pull off the over-the-top-extra theme flawlessly.

Did Penelope Cruz realize she was at the Met Gala? We're not so sure. The star arrived in this heartbreakingly basic black-and-white Chanel dress, which didn't even attempt to adhere to the night's theme.

Saoirse Ronan's gown was flanked by dragons! The golden creatures sat atop both of her shoulders, complementing the gorgeous classic Gucci red and green shades and serving up a look that would make Khaleesi green with envy. We've got to take a closer look…

If you're not even going to pretend to adhere to the Met Gala theme, why even go? That's the question we have for Emma Stone, who arrived in this silver-and-black Louis Vuitton jumpsuit that didn't evoke camp in the slightest.

Hailee Steinfeld had a fun (and confusing!) message for photographers while posing on the pink carpet — "No Photos Please." Her ruffled purple-and-green couture gown was emblazoned with the command — an ironic request at the Met Gala. A black belt detail and hat tied this kitschy look together.

Karlie Kloss's golden Gucci moment felt underwhelming amidst a sea of killer ensembles. Though we liked the fact that it featured the Gucci logo subtly throughout the frock and those black sleeves were fun, this look felt like a lame attempt at channeling the "Camp: Notes on Fashion" theme.

Constance Wu brought us a look that was part Vegas showgirl, part flapper. We loved this departure for the star, who arrived in a low-cut silver Marchesa dress with fluttery cut-out sleeves and plenty of embellishments. But we're having a hard time placing it in the on-theme pile.

If there ever was an era that epitomized camp, it was the '80s. That's why Alicia Vikander nailed the theme in this Louis Vuitton getup complete with exaggerated ruffles around the collar, a chunky belt and sparkly silver around the sleeves.

Solange Knowles typically nails the theme of the Met Gala, so this turn was disappointing. The star's take on camp? A snakeskin long-sleeved romper and thigh-high boots.

Feathers and lace were perfectly on-brand for the theme, so Naomi Campbell's confection served up plenty of campy goodness. We loved the hot pink feathers, the bubblegum pink frock and the way white lace peaked out to make this frothy and feminine look even more over the top.

One of the most stunning accessories of the night? Rosie Huntington-Whiteley's feathered shrug. It almost didn't matter what was underneath it, but Rosie killed it, channeling Old Hollywood in this Oscar de la Renta getup.

Amber Valletta rocked a risky bodysuit on the pink carpet. Alone, this long-sleeved piece with a keyhole cut-out down the bodice was bold enough, but it also came with a lime green feathered jacket to complete the funky vibe.

Beads and feathers and bling! Anna Wintour melded many over-the-top elements with a pale pink dress featuring plenty of sequined embellishments set underneath a pink-and-black feathered cape that featured an ombre effect that gave way to black tips, resulting in an outrageous fashion moment for the style maven.

We didn't expect too much camp from Anna Wintour's daughter, Bee Shaffer, but this outfit was a bore in comparison to the rest of the fun fashion at the Met Gala. Her black pantsuit featured a massive red rose detail that gave way to a very lengthy train. Next!

Another star who opted to switch things up on the red carpet? Kris Jenner, who debuted blonde locks. Though her new hair was fun, we weren't fans of her outfit. The reality star wore a boring navy jumpsuit by Tommy Hilfiger with a feathered opera coat over top.

Another star who donned a brand new hair color? Mindy Kaling, who looked like a golden goddess in her glimmering gown with hair to match, delivering a perfectly kitschy and on-theme look.

Not campy enough, Sara Sampaio! The Victoria's Secret Angel served up a dull look compared to most of the night's fashion — this strapless August Getty silk tulle ballgown with Faberge-inspired jewel quilting on the top half and a solid white tulle skirt peeking out below.
