Fashion hits and misses for July 2018

We're in the middle of summer, with some stars turning up the heat on the red carpet and others… well, they've been serving some looks that are downright cold. Our first example of the month? Paris Hilton! She unfortunately kept our least favorite trend — the sheer dress — alive and well at the Tezenis show in Verona, Italy, on July 24. The DJ-socialite and former reality star opted to essentially wear black undergarments with a polka-dotted, three-quarter sleeve dress over top. Making things worse? That cheesy skull-emblazoned handbag and those shiny booties.

Obsessed! Lili Reinhart is quickly becoming one of our new fashion crushes! This pale pink Ralph Lauren silk number is certainly pleading her case. The "Riverdale" beauty rocked this pretty slip dress with an equally lovely velvet clutch to the Entertainment Weekly party during Comic-Con on July 21.

We weren't crazy about Chloe Grace Moretz's Stella McCartney gown. The star wore this unfortunate long-sleeved, multicolored dress with a super-busy print to a screening of "The Misseducation of Cameron Post" in Los Angeles on July 22.

Taylor Swift exemplified easy, breezy, beautiful summer style while stepping out in New York City on July 18. The superstar donned double denim, opting for short, black denim cut-offs with a cropped light denim tank, and finished the look off with sneakers and her classic red lip.

Emma Watson excelled at Wimbledon style in London on July 15. The movie star sported vintage Ralph Lauren at the tennis event — a belted tan linen collared shirt dress accessorized with a wide-brimmed hat and white heels.

Almost, but not quite! Though we liked the strapless floral dress that Lena Dunham rocked while out in Los Angeles on July 11, we weren't fans of the way she paired it with running shoes… and mint green ones at that!

Emily Ratajkowski showed off a perfect casual summer look while grabbing lunch in New York City on July 19. The model sported this darling floral sundress with a pair of white sneakers — it's both easy and easily duplicated!

An example of how not to rock sneakers? While "Riverdale" was a huge hit at Comic-Con on July 21, this outfit on Camila Mendes… not so much. The star donned a ruffled dress shirt and leather skirt — which on their own were polished and pretty — but ruined the look with this pair of platform sneakers.

Arielle Kebbel continued to make the case for dresses with sneakers while at Comic-Con on July 21. The actress donned this darling black-and-white plaid minidress with a pair of fresh white kicks for a casual yet stylish combo.

We're used to Hailee Steinfeld being on the hit list, but her Comic-Con ensemble on July 20 left a lot to be desired. The star stepped out in this shiny, dirty-gold Prada pantsuit complete with tons of embellishments, which she paired with a white T-shirt and matching heels.

We loved Kate Mara's sleeveless, collared white minidress that she donned at the Dawn 40th Anniversary of wildlife rescue initiatives event in New York City on July 19. From the tiny studded detailing on the collar to the way she paired it with matching strappy heels, this look was an instant hit!

Though we loved the color, those massive spiral appliqués on Jamie Chung's minidress at the Entertainment Weekly party during Comic-Con on July 21 threw us off. Without those, the deep blue dress paired with those strappy black heels would have certainly been a hit!

Pretty in pajamas! Spice Girl Emma Bunton embraced the pajama-inspired trend at the "Hotel Transylvania 3: A Monster Vacation" screening in London on July 22, rocking this matching multicolored set by Stine Goya with nude heels for a perfect summer ensemble.

AJ Michalka certainly didn't dress to impress at Comic-Con. While attending events during Day 3 of the convention in San Diego on July 21, AJ opted for this sleeveless red and iridescent blue mess of a dress. And the addition of those loafers just added insult to injury.

Comic-Con cool! Olivia Holt posed on the press line to promote her show, "Marvel's Cloak & Dagger," during the annual convention in San Diego on July 21 decked out in Emporio Armani. We loved the pale blue shade of the pantsuit with its subtle striping and the way she rocked that Naked Wardrobe crop top underneath.

Pants with tails? Why?! Lily James really baffled us with this one. The star wore this Hellessy outfit, comprised of a cute long-sleeved floral top with an asymmetrical neckline plus that pair of offending pink pants with dramatic tails, while out in New York City on July 18.

Mandip Gill arrived at the "Doctor Who" TV show photocall during Comic-Con on July 19 in a look that incorporated two elements that were pretty risky — velvet and a jumpsuit. But she totally pulled this look off, from pairing the wild print with very simple heels to rocking an updo to keep the attention on the funky frock — and we were very into it!

Though we appreciate her dedication to the new platform sneaker trend, we can't get on board with Suki Waterhouse's July 19 Comic-Con getup. She wore printed trousers and a white crop top with some fierce and funky high sneakers for a wacky ensemble we had to list among the misses.

Gorgeous Eiza Gonzalez attended the ESPY Awards on July 18 in this simple yet stunning black column dress. The thigh-high slit showed off her sandals — which provided a fun pop of color — helping craft a look that proves less is sometimes more.

Anya Taylor-Joy attended the Entertainment Weekly party at Comic-Con on July 21 in this super-puzzling getup. The star went with a lingerie-inspired corset-like tan-and-black top complete with a belt detail on top but opted for studded casual shorts on the bottom. The mixed-up look is a miss in our book, as was pairing it with those sky-high heels.

KJ Apa looked effortlessly cool during Comic-Con Day 3 on July 21. The "Riverdale" star sported a short-sleeved button-down (with a bunch of buttons undone to up the cool factor!), ripped black jeans and crisp white sneakers while hanging out at the convention.

Librarian chic? Katie Holmes wore this snooze of a look at the premiere of "The Wife" in Los Angeles on July 23. From the off-white blouse underneath to the stark white blazer to the boring black trousers, this looks nothing like a red carpet outfit (no offense to librarians!).

We love a good one-piece look! Dove Cameron wore this off-white version at Comic-Con on July 19 and kept things simple with an updo and a pair of black heels.

While we adore Amanda Seyfried, we can't get behind this lackluster blue Prada minidress she wore to the "Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again" premiere. We weren't fans of the blinged-out high neck or the weird draping along the sleeves. Keep reading to see her equally unfortunate makeup…

Maybe Amanda Seyfriend's makeup artist was trying to distract us from that dress? Well, it almost worked, because we're perplexed by the blue-tinged shade on her lips and the dark red shadow underneath her eyes. The dramatic blue eyeshadow on her lids, that updo and the otherwise barely-there makeup ensured this look was a miss.

Adore! Margot Robbie's "Terminal" premiere dress was flawless. The black lace knee-length frock by Chanel featured spaghetti straps and a fun peplum layer of extra lace. It was all complemented perfectly by those classic black heels.

We love the concept of Priyanka Chopra's getup at the Saks Fifth Avenue + Vogue Summer event in New York City on July 12, but we don't love the execution. The fun, bright-orange and summery shade was nice, but we would have preferred this silky two-piece have been a pantsuit instead of a collared blouse and matching pants.

We're starry-eyed over Dakota Johnson's adorable Malibu ensemble! The star was en route to the Maison St-Germain event in the beach city on July 11 when she rocked this darling off-the-shoulder, bow-trimmed blouse by Isa Arfen. She paired it with high-waisted baggy jeans by the same designer and finished things off with a pair of strappy black heels for one of our favorite feasibly copied celeb looks of the summer.

We weren't crazy about Carla Gugino's strapless dress from the front. It appeared pretty simple, and we were mainly wondering why it sort of looked like denim and why she chose those awful multicolored heels. But once we saw the back of this look, we had so many more questions.

From the back, Carla Gugino's dress was even more perplexing, with its bizarre bright-red tail. That unexpected addition at least matched the back of her multicolored heels, shedding some light on why she chose to wear those shoes, but overall, this whole look is still a messy miss.

This fiery red look probably wouldn't have worked on anyone else — but they don't call Alessandra Ambrosio a supermodel for nothing! On July 2 during Berlin Fashion Week, the stunner rocked this two-piece ensemble by Rasario, which consisted of a spaghetti-strap tiny top and a pair of high-waisted, baggy trousers. Her Giuseppe Zanotti heels couldn't have matched the shade of red more perfectly, resulting in a sleek, fun and colorful look.

Almost, but not quite, Mandy Moore! The star, who has really been trying to up her fashion game these days, stepped out for the Christian Dior show during Paris Fashion Week on July 2 wearing a look from the designer. All the pieces alone were fine — the slogan tee, the fun crimson lace skirt, the chunky belt and those boots — but unfortunately it just didn't work all together.

Penelope Cruz showed up to the Chanel show during Paris Fashion Week on July 3 in the perfect getup — a sweet peach-and-white checkered frock made by the design house. The fun hat and nude pumps worked as perfect accessories, making this one of our favorite looks from the star this year!

Natalie Dormer got things all wrong while attending a photocall for her film "In Darkness" on July 3. She picked a bright blue one-shouldered, one-puffy-sleeved long-sleeved top, which she paired with cuffed jeans — then bizarrely added pale-pink heels. Another confusing element? The bright yellow clutch with that strange hoop handle.

Nina Dobrev exemplified perfectly pretty summer style, donning this sweet white V-neck dress with a pair of chunky silver sandals at the Maison St-Germain event in Los Angeles on July 10.

Alexis Bledel is always a fashion wildcard, either stopping us in our tracks or making us wish her looks would just… stop. This Amur dress falls somewhere in the middle, but we're calling it a miss. With the asymmetrical neckline, a single short sleeve and the mixup of floral patterns, we're not fans of this look. Making matters worse? The chunky black shoes she sported with the frock.

Hot pink perfection! Nicky Hilton Rothschild attended the Valentino show during Paris Fashion Week on July 4 in this stunning high-neck, long-sleeved confection by the designer, complete with a skirt covered in layers upon layers of ruffles.

We're not crazy about the Saloni dress Lily James wore to the Stockholm premiere of "Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again" on July 11. The iridescent shine of the spaghetti strap, form-fitting gown looked a little tacky for a film premiere, and the matchy-matchy shiny silver shoes didn't help matters.

We're really digging Lucy Hale's summer street style. The star stepped out in this peach and black lace lingerie-like tank, a pair of skinny jeans and black slides for a seemingly effortless yet super-stylish getup.

Not the most conventional travel ensemble, Emma Roberts! We weren't feeling the shiny floral minidress she sported fresh off a plane at LAX Airport on July 4. And if we weren't into her frock, we certainly wouldn't have been into her chunky metallic flats either!

We loved the black-and-white floral frock that Emily Blunt wore to an event in New York City on July 9, from its cap sleeves to its plunging neckline to its full skirt. The delicate black floral detailing matched her strappy black heels perfectly, and her beauty look tied everything together flawlessly! Let's see that next!

How gorgeous is Emily Blunt's crown braid?! Paired with warm-toned makeup and those incredible dangling earrings, we loved every part of this look.

Yikes! Ashley Madekwe is an actress-turned-fashion blogger, so there's no excuse for this unfortunate getup. From the baggy pants to the poorly fitting halter top to the ensemble's dreary color, this look is definitely a miss.

Model Georgia Fowler got to sit out the Elie Saab show and watch from the front row, but we weren't fans of her frock by the same designer. The sleeveless minidress had too much happening for our taste, with its thick black border, bizarre ties at the wrists, slits up the skirt and floral detailing on the bodice.

Princess Beatrice the fashionista! We're all heart eyes for the delicate floral frock, which featured three-quarter length sleeves and a pretty pastel floral overlay, that she wore to the the L'Occitane en Provence and Flowerbx dinner in London on July 5. And those metallic pumps were the perfect addition.

Oh no, Penelope Cruz! The star's black Chanel dress had potential, but the ill-fitting, odd strappy detailing at the neck, combined with that overdone sheer tulle portion of the skirt from the knee down, made this look a miss.

We're not quite sure what all is happening with Serayah McNeill's ensemble, but we'll attempt to break it down. The star sported this Alice and Olivia pantsuit — complete with a trench coat — in the dead of summer on July 9. If that wasn't strange enough, it featured multicolored, mismatched patches, and she chose to accessorize it with a bright-red top and heels.

Lily Allen really left us confused after she stepped out in London on July 6 wearing this. The singer sported an oversized lime-green dress with a black print, a matching headband over her bright-pink hair and a handbag in the exact same shade. More perplexing than the all-green ensemble? Her choice to pair it with sneakers!

Off-duty supermodel chic! Adriana Lima looked impossibly cool while heading into the Vogue Paris Foundation Dinner during Paris Fashion Week on July 3. She sported a sparkly silver minidress while rocking her black shimmering coat atop her shoulders. Her slicked-back hairstyle, red lip and black pumps completed this major fashion moment.

Ally Hilfiger comes from a fashion family, so we expected a lot more from her red carpet style. She attended the "Don't Worry He Won't Get Far On Foot" premiere in Los Angeles on July 11 in this super-casual, excessively floral printed romper. Making matters worse? Those clunky black heels and those monstrous dangling teal earrings.
