Fashion hits and misses for August 2017

The dog days of summer are upon us, but the celebrity fashion keeps getting hotter… or more horrible. Take Melanie Brown, for example. Mel B's style was just not on-point this month. Her latest atrocious outfit? This sheer black bodysuit with strategically placed blue crystals, which she wore to the "America's Got Talent" Season 12 live show in Los Angeles on Aug. 15. The stars are getting in their summer whites while they can! Brooklyn Decker showed off some adorable maternity style at the Champion Equality MAKE It Your Business Panel Event in Celebration of Women's Equality Day hosted by Keds and LOLA in New York City on Aug. 23 in this darling long-sleeved white minidress. Extra points for pairing it with those cute and simple metallic low-heeled Mary Janes.

Not much Bella Thorne wears these days shocks us, but that doesn't make her immune from the miss list. The star attended the Billboard Hot 100 Music Festival in New York City on Aug. 19 in… a bikini, white mesh pants and white patent-leather boots. As one does.

We're sort of obsessed with Chrissy Teigen's funky fashion look at the Kick-off for Chase Sapphire Sundays Brunch Series in Los Angeles on Aug. 20. The star rocked this boxy, flowy gold and green Loewe top with a black Alice McCall skirt — complete with a thigh-high slit — and pulled everything together with a classic Gucci belt.

Listen, we love cats as much as the next person. But on our couture? No thanks! So Molly Sims' Dolce & Gabbana frock emblazoned with Bengal kitties at the MitoQ luncheon at Catch in New York City on Aug. 16 just didn't make the cut this month.

We're in love with this Monique Lhuillier number! Kathryn Hahn wore the feminine, floral frock to the Emmys Cocktail Reception in Los Angeles on Aug. 21, pairing it with pink pumps for some perfect summer style!

We're in the midst of a heat wave in Los Angeles, but you wouldn't know it by looking at Aaron Carter! The star sported this massive white fur coat at the Project Angel Food Angel Awards Gala on Aug. 19. Even more unusual is that he wore a white T-shirt, ripped jeans and sneakers underneath the bizarrely formal outerwear.

Alessandra Ambrosio nailing summer street style? Not a shock! The Victoria's Secret Angel stepped out in Los Angeles in this adorable pink, orange and white two-piece look by Dehla on Aug. 24.

We found Waldo! He's actually Alan Cumming, seen here at the "Patti Cake$" New York City premiere on Aug. 14, where he rocked the character's red-and-white striped shirt with red shoes and spectacles and finished the bizarre look with suspenders and jeans. Halloween is still two more months away, Alan.

Salma Hayek nailed that perfect dressy-yet-casual look while arriving at a taping of "Jimmy Kimmel Live" in Hollywood on Aug. 17 in a flowing floral maxidress with a pair of hot pink heels.

We're not going to lie — we're surprised that the designer responsible for this ensemble willingly made their name public. Blac Chyna attended the Blac Chyna figurine doll launch in Los Angeles on Aug. 17 in this…. well, outfit. The Shane Justin look is simply a dark blue velvet bikini with a sheer pink and orange floral skirt overlay.

Oh, Tyra! Tyra Banks gave us butterflies in this black-and-white jumpsuit at the "America's Got Talent" live show in Los Angeles on Aug. 22. Unfortunately, they weren't the good kind. We weren't fans of her massive wing-like sleeves, loud print or belted waist… or that hairdo.

Kendall Jenner nailed the dressed-up tomboy vibe in Los Angeles on Aug. 23! The star rocked this tiny polka-dot sundress with white sneakers for a cool summer look.

LeAnn Rimes really needed to borrow an iron before getting dressed. The star stopped by the Build Studio in New York City on Aug. 17 in this wrinkled shirt dress that she paired with ankle boots, leaving her looking more ready for the mall than promoting a project.

Tracee Ellis Ross wore one of our favorite outfits of the month (more on that later), but she disappointed at the Emmys Cocktail Reception in Los Angeles on Aug. 21. We loved all of the pieces of her look separately, but the print mixing just didn't work all together. Don't worry, she redeemed herself earlier in August, as you'll see in a few clicks…

Gisele Bundchen can really pull off any look, including this sparkly LBD with a leather jacket. The supermodel stunned in the cool pairing at the Rosa Cha Summer Collection Launch Event in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on Aug. 16.

A man's shirt as a dress? A leather skirt? Olivia Culpo's look at the PrettyLittleThing x Olivia Culpo collection launch in Los Angeles on Aug. 17 was more than confusing. We're not sure if it's all one piece, or if the leather skirt was thrown on top of an unbuttoned white blouse, but no matter how this look is comprised, it is not for us. Next!

A nice silk suit? Rocking it sans shirt? All things we endorse, but something about Demi Lovato's execution of this midnight blue menswear-meets-pajamas ensemble fell flat as she stopped by the "Elvis Duran and the Morning Show" studios in New York City on Aug. 17. Perhaps it's the ill fit, or maybe this look is best suited for a red carpet and not an early-morning appearance, but either way, she missed the mark with this one.

Heidi Klum made it on the hit list! At the "America's Got Talent" Season 12 live show in Los Angeles on Aug. 15, the star sported this fun cheetah-print pantsuit, a nice departure from her fashion disasters of late. Even better? It's totally affordable — the look comes from her own fashion line, Esmara.

Another day, another example ofMel B's style just not hitting the mark this month. This mosaic-like multicolored long-sleeved dress with a slit up the front that she wore to the "America's Got Talent" live show in Los Angeles on Aug. 22. Even weirder than the dress? The inexplicable silver hairstyle!

Naomi Watts wore this ill-fitting, sack-like white gown by Fendi to the premiere of "The Glass Castle" in New York City on Aug. 9.

A better way to wear white before Labor Day? Brooke Shields showed how it's done at the Ace Awards in New York City on Aug. 7 in a sleeveless white number by Calvin Klein, which featured a fun ruffled asymmetrical tail and paired perfectly with stark white heels.

What's going on with your neck, Mandy Moore? The "This Is Us" star attended the NBC TCA Summer Press Tour in Los Angeles on Aug. 3 in this otherwise simple black dress, which featured a ruffled coral-colored high collar that aimed to set the look apart but definitely backfired.

Futuristic fashion! Cara Delevingne shut down the black carpet at the "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" premiere in Mexico City on Aug. 2 in this stunning Atelier Versace minidress. The sheer, nude creation was more like a work of art than mere couture. It featured linked miniature discs for a chainmail effect. Her silver sky-high stilettos just added to the space-age vibe.

We weren't fans of Elizabeth Olsen's Rosie Assoulin creation at the "Ingrid Goes West" premiere in New York City on Aug. 8. The bright red frock, which featured a cape-like feature plunging off the back, a button-down front and pants underneath, was tied together with a sky blue belt and dark pumps for a confusing color palette and unfortunate overall look.

Who knew nude and silver made such a great combo? Nicole Kidman exemplified this color combination at the premiere of "Top of the Lake: China Girl" in Sydney on Aug. 1, donning a gorgeous tulle ankle-length Zuhair Murad confection with a silver belt and corresponding silver pumps.

Yikes! Alexis Bledel rocked a pink, maroon and black striped long-sleeved lace gown at the TCA Awards Cocktail Reception in Los Angeles on Aug. 5, but it was her shoes that gave us the most trouble. Though they were nearly the same shades, the chunky, tied sandals ruined whatever hope the Sachin & Babi dress had.

Jessica Alba covered her recently announced baby bump with this cute and casual pale pink printed sundress while out in New York City on Aug. 3. She kept the look low-key with loose waves and simple, strappy navy heels.

Vanessa Hudgens picked this unfortunate Georges Chakra minidress for the Fox TCA Summer Press Tour in Los Angeles on Aug. 8. The mint green dress featured a sheer overlay complete with floral detailing for a shimmering look that fell flat on the gray carpet.

Zendaya sparkled in a glimmering Vivetta number at Variety's Power of Young Hollywood event in Los Angeles on Aug. 8. She smartly finished off the bold two-piece ombre look, which featured pale pink trim, with nude sandals.

Too! Much! Print! That's what we want to tell Demi Moore, who attended the "Good Time" film premiere in New York City on Aug. 8 in a patterned long-sleeved bohemian-style gown, which we would have loved if it had been comprised of less fabric.

Fifty shades of pink! Celine Dion donned multiple shades of the soft hue while leaving the Royal Monceau hotel in Paris on Aug. 2. We loved the combo of the dark mauve top, the peachy full skirt and those rosy suede boots!

We're not saying Katie Holmes is one of our go-to fashionistas, but we expect more than this! The star went shopping in Los Angeles on Aug. 3 while wearing a Canadian tuxedo. We wish the jeans fit better and the shirt was less baggy, but it was actually those bulky accessories that tanked the outfit for us.

Making a Hanes T-shirt high fashion? Only a supermodel could pull that off! Karlie Kloss rocked a simple white Hanes x Karla T-shirt with a purple leather Ferragamo skirt while celebrating the launch of the Hanes x Karla collection at Maxfield in Los Angeles on Aug. 3. By slicking her hair back in a high ponytail and keeping her accessories to a minimum, she pulled off an impossibly chic and unexpected look.

That is one wide-legged jumpsuit! Elizabeth Olsen donned this Dior one-piece at a screening of "Wind River" in New York City on Aug. 2, and though we didn't hate the look, we did hate it for a summer event. In the fall, maybe, but the dark shade and excessive fabric weren't a good look for an August premiere.

Jenny Slate opted for Osman at the premiere of "Comrade Detective" in Los Angeles on Aug. 3. We loved the unique take on the jumpsuit, which appeared to be separates, but was actually comprised of a sheer floral bodice and slim-fit pants fused together. The fun pop of color provided by those blue Olgana Paris pumps was just icing on the cake!

Loud, all-over prints are not our favorite thing. Leah Remini sported a Chloe long-sleeved frock at the TCA Awards Cocktail Reception in Los Angeles on Aug. 5 and the excess of print plus that plunging neckline resulted in a miss.

There's less than a month left to get all those pre-Labor Day looks in, and Tracee Ellis Ross served up a stellar one at the launch of the Hanes x Karla collection at Maxfield in Los Angeles on Aug. 3. We adored her all-white ensemble, comprised of a cropped tank, a darling white skirt with lace detailing and white pumps.

Hailey Baldwin's "Carpool Karaoke: The Series" launch party look in Los Angeles on Aug. 7 was just too casual for our taste. Between the cropped gray tank and the baggy green tracksuit thrown over top, it attempted to embrace the athleisure style but missed the mark on making it red-carpet ready.

We loved Mandy Moore's multicolored Missoni masterpiece at the TCA Awards Cocktail Reception in Los Angeles on Aug. 5. The pretty belted column dress featuring tan, maroon, blue, black and green stripes made for a fashionable night out.
