Wonderwall.com is taking a look back at the stars who found love, suffered heartbreak or experienced some other major event in their love lives in January 2020, starting with this superstar dancer-actress… Julianne Hough and her husband of two years, Brooks Laich, spent the first few days of the new year sparking speculation they'd called it quits over the holidays. (She's been pictured sans wedding ring several times in recent weeks, while he cryptically wrote about "stepping into a new chapter in my life" in a Jan. 7 Instagram post.) On Jan. 8, People magazine reported that, according to a source, the couple have been "having problems for months" because the dancer is "very independent and a free spirit," which has "been tough for Brooks and their marriage." But according to a second source, they haven't thrown in the towel just yet: "It seems they are not giving up, but also not talking about it. They want to do this their way. They don't want to discuss their marriage. They have been having problems, but many people do," said the second insider. "Maybe it's a just a phase, maybe not. … But either way they are not going to address it publicly right now." Meanwhile, an Us Weekly source said that Julianne and Brooks "definitely have been going through a rough patch." Said the insider, "They have both been in different places for work so they haven't been able to spend as much time together this past few months. … The unexpected deaths of their dogs also really hit them hard and has been something that's been really difficult for both of them to work through." On Dec. 30, People magazine broke the news that Michelle Williams and Thomas Kail — the Tony Award-winning director of "Hamilton" — are an item. They're also engaged and expecting their first child together. Within the past four months, the actress has picked up both an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her work on "Fosse/Verdon," which her beau directed. It's unclear when exactly the duo — who made their red carpet debut at the 2020 Golden Globes on Jan. 5 — took their relationship to the next level. Michelle married singer-songwriter Phil Elverum in the summer of 2018, but by April 2019, they'd called it quits. Thomas, meanwhile, had been married to actress Angela Christian since 2006 when he and Michelle first met on set. According to an Us Weekly source, they "fell hard and fast for each other" following their respective splits. On Jan. 8, People reported that, according to a source, the Oscar nominee "fell in love" and is "happy and fulfilled and ready for another child."

Rachel Bilson and Bill Hader confirmed rumors they're a couple by posing together on the red carpet at the 2020 Golden Globes on Jan. 5. The duo, who were also seen holding hands on their way into the award show, previously co-starred in 2013's "The To Do List," which was written and directed by the funnyman's then-wife, Maggie Carey. (They split in 2017.) The new couple were first linked after they were spotted holding hands while visiting a Starbucks in his hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma, with members of his family on Dec. 21. In early November, they were also seen dining together in Los Angeles.

On Dec. 31, InTouch broke the news that Matt Lauer and PR exec Shamin Abas, who've been friends for 15 years, recently took their relationship to the next level — they even spent the holidays together vacationing in New Zealand, where he owns a farm. "Obviously one thing led to another and they're a full-fledged item now," a source told the tabloid, adding that the disgraced former "Today" show star has been "on the prowl" for a new girlfriend since his ex-wife, Annette Roque, "dumped him." According to the insider, Shamin stood by Matt's side after many of his friends "turned their backs on him." Said the source, "She knows who he is. She's thrilled she's with him. She doesn't seem to have a care in the world. … For everything he may have done, Matt's very charming. I can see how Shamin fell for him." The insider adds that the former TV superstar "can trust" his new love. Page Six also confirmed the InTouch report: "Matt and Shamin have known each other for many years, as she spends a lot of time in the Hamptons, as does he. They very recently began dating, she is a lovely woman," said an insider. On Jan. 2, "Entertainment Tonight" shed more light on the new romance. Said one "ET" source, "For some time, Matt wanted to save his marriage but his wife was far past ever mending their long-time troubled relationship. … Annette has moved on, she has stepped out of this marriage for good and is ready for Matt to do the same." According to the insider, Matt and Shamin started dating in October, and he "finally feels free to date in public." Continued the source, "He has spent a great deal of time reflecting on his role in his downfall and knows the only way to get past this is to start over. … Shamin has been a longtime friend to Matt and it's no surprise they've started dating. She was there for him throughout this process. Since Matt's separation, he was quietly dating women, but hadn't been serious until now. This romance with Shamin seems to make him really happy. She was one of the first friends to reach out and offer Matt support. … They met in the Hamptons years ago and remained friends. … She has stood by him and isn't letting what's been reported affect their relationship. Matt and Shamin have so much in common. Shamin knows what he's been through and wants to be there for him for his next step in life." Cody Simpson and Miley Cyrus faced a fresh round of breakup rumors in late December. The split speculation kicked off after a Page Six spy spotted the Australian singer-songwriter "drinking and flirting with girls" at a New York City nightclub on Dec. 22. During his night out sans Miley — whom he reportedly texted from the club — Cody also allegedly locked lips with a mystery woman. "He kissed her on the lips with no tongue," said the spy. ("There is absolutely no truth to this story," his rep told Us Weekly on Dec. 23.) All seemed well between Cody and Miley over Christmas, which they celebrated with her family in Nashville. They then spent New Year's Eve apart, though Miley was clearly on Cody's mind in the hours leading up to 2020: "I love my girl so much I could write 20 books," he scrawled across a photo of them together on his Instagram Story. While ringing in the New Year in Aspen, Cody told Page Six that the pre-Christmas cheating rumors were "stupid." He also insisted that he and Miley are "great."
Madonna's relationship with her much younger boyfriend, Ahlamalik Williams, is more serious than we thought! On Dec. 30, TMZ reported that, according to the 26-year-old backup dancer's father, Drue, Ahlamalik and the superstar have actually been a couple for more than a year. (They first met in 2015 when Madonna personally selected Ahlamalik during a group audition to join her Rebel Heart Tour.) She's also met Ahlamalik's parents — they spent time together in New York City and Las Vegas and plan to meet up again in London and France. (During the Sin City get-together, she hosted her beau and his folks for a dinner cooked by her personal chef in her private suite.) According to TMZ, Drue said that the 61-year-old singer told him she "loves [his] son unconditionally and wants to take care of him." Said the proud papa, "Love has no age. … My son is livin' la vida loca, and I'm just happy for him." Ahlamalik was also on hand when Madonna rang in the New Year with a tropical getaway with her kids.
Apparently Kourtney Kardashian and Younes Bendjima have gotten more serious since mid-December, when multiple media outlets reported that although they'd started dating again, they'd yet to official reconcile. People magazine reported on Dec. 27 that that's no longer the case: "Kourtney decided to give him another chance," said one source. "They have fun together and her kids like him. He seems very committed to Kourtney. She's happy that they are back together. She didn't want to hide the relationship any more. It was her decision to make it public again." And that she did! When the mother of three took to Instagram to share a slideshow of photos from her family's annual Christmas Eve bash, she included a shot of herself posing with Younes, his arm wrapped around her waist. An E! News source, meanwhile, shared a slightly different take on how the couple reunited: "Kourtney doesn't want to admit it or make some big announcement but she's essentially back with Younes. It took a lot of time and persistence but he wouldn't give up," said the insider. "Now they are back to spending a lot of time together and he's around a lot. … Kourtney hasn't found anyone that she feels this kind of chemistry and attraction to. He loves doting on her and it's very nice to feel so desired. … She's just going with it and loves having him around. She really doesn't care what anyone thinks."
Kate Beckinsale may have spent the evening of Jan. 5 hitting up the 2020 Golden Globes afterparty scene with Machine Gun Kelly — who's besties with her ex-boyfriend, Pete Davidson — but they're not a couple. "Kate attended the 'Fleabag' party at San Vicente Bungalows and Machine Gun Kelly was there too," a spy told E! News. "They hung out together inside, but they left separately. Kate got into the car with a girlfriend and Machine Gun Kelly left on his own. Everyone was asking if they were a couple. Machine Gun Kelly said it was a 'negative' and Kate said it was 'absolutely ridiculous.' … After they left the 'Fleabag' party they met up again at Chateau Marmont and hung out there. They seemed friendly, laughing and joking around together. But there was no PDA or signs of them being a couple. At the end of the night they left in the same car. They had friends with them, but the two of them sat together in the back and seemed very friendly." (Ironically, the actress first connected with Pete at a 2019 Golden Globes afterparty.) Later, Kate denied that there's anything romantic going on between her and MGK, telling a troll on Instagram, "Why don't you worry about things that are actually happening and donate to the Australian wild fires rather than waste your time on things that are not happening and never were."
Hilary Duff and Matthew Koma tied the knot at their home in Los Angeles on Dec. 21. "It was a lovefest — a small and intimate ceremony at her house with friends and family," a source told Just Jared, which broke the happy news. The singer-actress and the music-producer, who welcomed daughter Banks in 2018, kept the event "low key," an insider told People magazine, adding that "the ceremony started at sunset and they got married inside the house." After exchanging vows, the duo hosted a reception in a white tent in their backyard. Just one month after she took their relationship public on Instagram, Demi Lovato and Austin Wilson called it quits, Us Weekly reported on Dec. 21. The singer-actress confirmed the split in the comments section of her Instagram page: "Please don't go after him," she implored a fan who bashed her ex. "He's a good guy. Much better than what people see on the outside just because he's got a lot of tattoos." Added Demi, "Breakups are hard for both parties involved. Just stay nice and say prayers."
Nikki Bella and Artem Chiqvintsev took to Instagram on Jan. 3 to announce that they got engaged late last year. "I said yes in France in November! We have been trying to keep it a secret but really wanted to share our excitement for the New Year!" the former wrestler captioned a slideshow of photos of herself and her new fiancé. "You are the best thing that has ever happened to me. So excited for what's to come I love you more than anything and thank you for saying Yes," the dancer captioned the same two shots.
Jana Kramer kicked off the New Year by sparking rumors that she and her husband, Mike Caussin, are headed for a split. The drama started on Dec. 30 when the singer-actress captioned a mirror selfie on Instagram, "2019. Ur coming to a very interesting end….and for now, all I have to say is…Time heals all wounds." Later, she mysteriously removed the word "wife" from her description of herself on her Instagram page, deleted several photos of the former professional football player from her feed and removed his name from the title of her "Whine Down" podcast. Though she later added "wife" and Mike's name back to her profile, he was noticeably absent from the Jan. 5 episode of their joint podcast, during which Jana candidly discussed rebuilding trust with Mike following his 2016 infidelity scandal. ("How do you rebuild trust? I think it's just time — time and a lot of therapy and a lot of proving, consistent, rigorous honesty," she said. "One thing we learned from therapy is the 24-hour rule. You have 24 hours. If you lie, [you have time] to come back and say, 'I messed up. That was a lie.' And that shows change. That shows some honesty. That shows a little growth. Get therapy because it's worth it.") According to an Us Weekly source, Jana and Mike are "working through" some issues right now: "There are ups and downs with them, but they are working through it right now," said the insider, adding that the couple "are looking towards a strong 2020."
E! News reported on Dec. 26 that, following his late 2019 breakup from Jessie J, Channing Tatum is on Raya, an exclusive dating app for the rich and famous. "He's been on Raya for a few weeks. He would love to be dating someone and is not shy about it," said a source. "He wants to have fun again and he doesn't care if he meets someone online, a set up or just walking down the street. … A friend suggested Raya and he felt like he had nothing to lose by joining." According to Us Weekly, the actor's Raya profile reads, "And yes, I used to be a stripper. Sorry."
Wait, what?! On Jan. 8, DailyMail.com published a bombshell report alleging that Denise Richards and Brandi Glanville had an affair between early 2019 and mid-2019 after the former "Wild Things" star told the "Drinking and Tweeting" writer that she and her husband of a little more than a year, Aaron Phypers, have an open relationship. The British webloid reports that "multiple production sources" claim Denise stopped shooting "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" after her co-stars confronted her about the affair during a trip to Rome in late November. According to one insider, "Denise claimed to Brandi that she was in an open marriage, but she wasn't and this has hurt Denise's husband Aaron very much." Brandi, meanwhile, "is upset that Denise lied to her." Denise's publicist, however, insists the story "isn't true." According to a People magazine source, "What really happened with Brandi and Denise will play out on the season. There is a lot of she said, she said going on. But it's going to be very dramatic."
There's a new guy in Lady Gaga's life: The superstar was caught on camera making out with a mystery man at a New Year's Eve party in Las Vegas. According to TMZ, which published video of the passionate lip-lock, the man's name is Michael. Later in the evening, the pair were seen leaving the bash hand in hand.
Did Duane "Dog the Bounty Hunter" Chapman recently take his relationship with his personal assistant of more than two decades, a woman named Moon Angell, to the next level? That's what his daughter, Lyssa Chapman, has been alleging on social media since mid-December. Lyssa — whose mother is Dog's third wife — tweeted on Jan. 6 that Moon met the Chapman clan after dating one of the famed bounty hunter's sons. "If someone who met your family by dating your brother tried to date your father after your step-mom died, what would you do? If you went to your mother's closet and saw she moved all her clothes and replaced them with her own, what would you do? #ItsNotWhenOrWhyItsWho," she wrote. She also left a string of vomit emojis — which she later deleted — in the comments section of a selfie with Moon that her dad posted on Instagram on Jan. 5. But curiously, Dog told Radar Online that he and Moon are just friends. "She has just been so good to me. I'll get really emotional and find myself getting into a dark hole and she will tell me to suck it up. So it's been good having her by my side," he said as part of an interview that hit the Internet on Jan. 7, adding that he's "very lonely" and "the kind of guy that has to have a woman around," though he claims he won't marry again following the June 2019 death of his wife, Beth Chapman. "I see myself dating again. I am a human being. I don't ever remember being single," he continued. "I'll probably end up dating soon. … I think I will have a girlfriend who will sleep next to me, but they got to know the whole story. They got to know about Beth. It has to be a certain person." According to an "Entertainment Tonight" source, the pair have been dating for a few weeks and "are enjoying each other's company." According to the insider, the former reality star "is happy" with her new man. Echoed a People magazine source, "They are dating and happy." Carter — who was photographed with Paris at Diddy's 50 birthday party in mid-December — is reportedly a longtime friend of the Hilton family.
Kathy Griffin and longtime love Randy Bick tied the knot at their home in Hollywood just after midnight on New Year's Day. The duo exchanged vows in a 14-minute ceremony officiated by Lily Tomlin, during which the bride donned a white Diane Von Furstenberg gown — the very same dress she wore on her first date with Randy back in 2011. Later, Kathy took to Instagram to share a clip showing the "unedited hilarious and fun beginning to our wedding ceremony."
On Dec. 31, Sun Online reported that, according to a source, Matthew Perry has been secretly dating 28-year-old manager-producer Molly Hurwitz "for months." Said the insider, "They mix in the same circles and she's originally from New York where they have spent time together. She has a very quirky sense of humor and they hit it off immediately. Molly is not interested in fame and she rarely parties, she's been great for Matthew. They have kept the relationship a secret but things are getting more serious. They spent Christmas Day together with friends at his penthouse, exchanging gifts and watching 'Elf' on his large cinema screen." Added the source of the 50-year-old former "Friends" star, "He has been trying to find a girlfriend for a long time and even tried out celebrity dating app Raya, but he was struggling to meet the right woman."
It's official! Nicole Scherzinger and Scottish rugby player Thom Evans are a couple. The duo made their red carpet debut at the InStyle and Warner Bros. Golden Globes afterparty in Beverly Hills on Jan. 5. (Later that night, she also made their relationship Instagram official.) The pair first sparked romance rumors after Thom competed on the British reality show "The X Factor: Celebrity" — on which Nicole serves as a judge — in late 2019.
According to TMZ, Sara Gilbert filed to legally separate from her wife of more than five years, Linda Perry, in Los Angeles on Dec. 27. She reportedly listed their date of separation as Aug. 13, 2019, and indicated in her legal paperwork that neither she nor the rocker should pay spousal support to the other. During a Jan. 4 chat with Page Six, Linda opened up about the surprise split: "I'm still on an incredible adventure with Sara. I love her. I adore her," she said. "We have a beautiful child together. Us Weekly reported on Jan. 6 that, according to a source, the mid-December rumors about Ariel Winter and Luke Benward are true: They're "definitely dating." Said the insider of the couple, who were photographed holding hands in Los Angeles on Jan. 4, "Ariel is really happy with Luke and thinks he is a great match for her. … She loves his energy and charisma and feels very comfortable around him. Ariel is trying to keep her relationship with Luke somewhat private and isn't telling a ton of people that they're dating, but they are." As for her recent split from Levi Meaden, "Ariel felt like she and Levi were growing apart and not on the same page anymore and that's why they broke up," said a second source, adding that there's "no bad blood between them."
On Jan. 2, People magazine broke the news that Peter Facinelli proposed to girlfriend Lily Anne Harrison during their holiday vacation in Mazatlan, Mexico. The former "Twilight" star reportedly popped the question during dinner on the beach at the Estrella Del Mar Beach and Golf Resort.
On the Dec. 20 episode of her "On One" podcast, Angela Rye confirmed rumors that she and off-and-on love Common called it quits late last year. "We were together for about a year this time. And we broke up — I think it was September-ish, maybe — because we just want different things," she said. "We had been talking probably for two months about 'let's see where things go' because I'm leaning towards 'I want kids' and he was leaning towards 'I don't know.' … He is more established in his career, and we have a little bit of an age difference — and he has a fully grown, wonderful human daughter I love. … So not wanting to start over is a thing." Continued the activist and CNN correspondent, "I remember us having this conversation … and he said, 'I don't know if I want to have kids.' The Oscar-nominated actress has been dating Brandon Frankel, who works in entertainment marketing and branding. (He's been less shy when it comes to posting about their relationship, referring to her as his "sunshine gf" on Instagram in early July.) "I never thought one of the best days of my year would happen the last week of the year. I get to marry my best friend. We're ENGAGED!! So excited to become your wife. D&D until the end," she captioned a photo of herself gazing adoringly at her man … with her new engagement bling on full display.
Martha Hunt took to Instagram on Jan. 8 to announce that she's engaged to photographer Jason McDonald, to whom she was first linked in 2015. "I have a secret…" the Victoria's Secret Angel captioned a slideshow of photos of herself and her beau showing off her new engagement ring. She tagged the photos to Harbour Island in the Bahamas, indicating that's where they got engaged. Jason revealed in his own Instagram slideshow that the proposal took place on Jan. 5 and that Bear, the puggle pup he and Martha share, played a role in the question popping.
Actress Vanessa Morgan and professional baseball player Michael Kopech tied the knot at the Historic Walton House in Homestead, Florida, on Jan. 4. The bride donned a long-sleeved Eisen Stein Bridal gown while saying "I do" in front of just 40 guests, including her "Riverdale" co-stars Skeet Ulrich, Drew Ray Tanner and Madelaine Petsch. According to E! News, which published exclusive wedding photos, Vanessa's sister, Celina, served as her maid of honor. The bride changed into a Grace Loves Lace dress for the reception. Erin Foster and businessman Simon Tikhman tied the knot in Nashville on New Year's Eve. The bride's father, David Foster, walked her down the aisle, and her new stepmother, Katharine McPhee, performed during the reception. (The former "American Idol" star is two years younger than the "Barely Famous" actress.) The guest list also included Kate Hudson, Rachel Zoe and Jonah Hill, as well as Erin's sister, Sara Foster.
According to Us Weekly, Katie Cassidy filed to divorce Matthew Rodgers in Los Angeles on Jan. 8. She reportedly listed their date of separation as "TBD" and cited "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for the split. Curiously, she indicated that they tied the knot in December 2017, though they were believed to have wed in December 2018.
Dan Reynolds' wife, Aja Volkman, took to Instagram on Christmas to announce that the Imagine Dragons frontman re-proposed to her. In the lengthy caption of a photo of herself showing off her new ring, the mother of four detailed how she and the rocker moved forward following a seven-month separation in 2018: "I wouldn't put my ring back on. Even when we decided to stay together. I just couldn't go back to what we were. I told him that we would have to start again. He agreed," she wrote in part. Radar Online reported on Dec. 30 that Bristol broke up with Janson, who's five years her junior, right before the holidays. "Yeah, they're done," said a source. "Let's just say Bristol didn't know much about his past relationship and how recent it was, and she realized early on that he just has a lot of growing up to do." (Janson divorced his wife of less than a year, Makenzie Hausenfluck, just three months before he went Instagram official with Bristol in November.) "He's too young for her," added the insider. "She is focusing on her family and herself." Trace Cyrus took to Instagram on Jan. 2 to announce that he and Taylor Lauren Sanders recently parted ways, ending their engagement of about a year. In the caption of a selfie with sister Miley Cyrus, the musician wrote, "Happy New Year!!! 🥂🥳 This year I don't have any specific goals. I just want to focus on my family, music, & fitness all I can! Some of u might already know but I'm recently single & extremely thankful to have my family around me during this time."
